This is his temporary set up. I have hide, wood, cork bark, hygro and thermostat coming in the mail by Tuesday. But does it look ok so far? He's exploring :)

I would Throw Down Some Moss mixed with the bark, A freind of mine keeps rainbows and said that they enjoy Very high Humidity, Just a thought, you may want to wait for a more experienced keeper to weigh in

I don't have trouble with humidity at all. I had a hard time keeping it down for my milksnake actually. But I'm getting my new accurate hygro tomorrow so I'll see what's up then and act accordingly. I'm definitely putting moss in his cave hide once it gets here tomorrow :)

Yeah I'm handling him already, but he was exploring all over the tank and when I went in there to move the vine further from the heating lamp so he doesn't get burned, he wrapped himself on my finger and wouldn't let go lol.

Looking good!

Iridescence is a tough detail to capture, even for the pros. It depends more on the lighting than the camera, IMO.

His curiosity will probably die down a bit in a few days, after he's explored to his satisfaction.

Again, looking good!

You are very well on your way to being the perfect snakezilla mommy ;)

Also, I like the first two spots on his neck look like eyes. "I've got eyes on the back of my head". Kind of creepy/kind of awesome.

both my BRB and my SD tic like being in my face. Its very interesting to them I'm sure as a result of the intense and interesting heat signature.

Congrats! Gorgeous Brazilian! In the set up, I know from experience tha mine would spend around 20hrs a day buried if I used substrate that deep! I have to keep it real thin and offer her several hides instead otherwise I'd never see her! Looks really good though!

Mine display a similar variation, but with how they treat their moss in their humid hides. Some bury, some do not -- instead, they sit on top of it. It's interesting how much of an individual each snake is....

Haha maybe she's happier buried. My milk snake like to bury sometimes so I know I'll always use a substrate she can bury in :)

Zeus didn't like his moss. He seemed happy to have the moss replaced by damp paper towels

She seems happy enough using her hides now, just using the thinner substrate saved my poor heart flutters of "ooh...I wonder if she's got out?"....that game got old real quick I can tell you!

Moss will likely serve him better in the long term, Trollbie. Think of it as a function of surface area. A sheet of towel has two (relatively) flat large surfaces. Moss fragments, on the other hand, can capture water on every single surface of every single (usually very irregularly shaped) strand -- which means you capture more water. Plus, it promotes a feeling of safety, as the snake can press up against it or even tunnel in it. I totally believe you that he may not have been thrilled with this foreign new substance from the start, but with time and experience he'll come to love it. :-) Anyway, just my two cents.

No more ants. I see an occasional scout, but unfortunately I cannot let them live and make another nest in his cage. I feel bad, but they're in my territory lol :(

The humidity in the cage is 96% I'm actually concerned about it possibly being too much. But I can't keep it any lower now. I may have to drill more holes if it's too humid.

My problem with the moss was that it attracted ants. And he really didn't seem to enjoy it :/ But I'm gonna get some NZ sphagnum moss eventually and use that. I mist the paper towels as needed btw, and change them about twice a week

Like what other substrate? I don't wanna do aspen because of humidity and what's in there now is reptibark and eco earth

what a cutie. Ummm... where's the backing for your tank??

jaleely
04-25-12, 10:05 PM
ikester...what do you mean? lol i think there's different angles of the tank and it's a fully pieced tank.

substrates i've tried are sani chips, sand, coconut husk, aspin, and paper towels. For some of the hoard i have, i use strictly coco husk when i want it to stay humid...for the purest dry tank i use paper towels. For the sand boas, i'm currently trying actual sand. I was just curious. I've gone through a lot of things and they each have positives and negatives.

BTW one of the things i've noticed, is that if you put the moss in a tupperware (my sauna thread shows a couple) they LOVE it...but it's also the closeness of the space. They're not much for hiding in lose moss.

Well the reptishelter would have given him the tightness and darkness. But he just didn't like it in there until I put paper towels in. I'm gonna do the moss again once I know the ants aren't around anymore and experiment more.
As for substrate, I'm testing my luck with live plants so I don't have too many options.

uhh backing covering 3 sides of an enclosure. from top to bottom. It gives a sense of security especially for a new highly stressed baby snake. Thought everyone did that.

He isn't "new" anymore. And he's got plenty places to hide inside the tank. Sometimes he'll curl up in the front corner instead of hiding so I think he's fine.

Some people do sure, but its far from the norm. If you've got the setup correct and have hides and a substrate for them to burrow it may not be necessary. Its really just to get baby babies comfortable. If he's eating, pooping, shedding properly (which Zeus is) then there's really no need.

OOh that kind of backing. I cant' say as i've used it. It's not a bad idea, but so far i haven't had any trouble with my critters adjusting, and actually wanted to be out to see what's going on. With the exception of one dumeril's boa....everyone i have sits up in braches, or on TOP of their hides, or out on their slate rock. Every now and then someone will go into shed and go into a hide for a day or so, but each one is always back out again being bratty and trying to see what's going on.
With my dumeril's, i just put a lot of things like pipes, and wood hides, and ceramic hides, etc, in there and she slithers around until she finds a good spot and sits there for a few days.
It's not always needed, but sounds like a great idea for some new snakes settling in, or for some that like more privacy.

I put some towels over a few of my cages before...and each one i did it to...i came back the next day and each snake was sitting right in the middle at the glass staring at me *lol*
I got the impression they didn't like not being able to see out!

Sounds like you are on top of it! New Zealand has the best stuff anyway.

As for ants...how odd. There must have been some type of additive used by the moss grower that attracted them?

They might have just liked the humidity and the moss is nice to nest in? I hope there weren't know additives :(

i would say they were just looking for moisture.
