View Full Version : Jungle CP Size/Enclosure Size
Hello all, been lurking on these forums for awhile reading as much info as I can in preparation for when I get my next snake, hopefully a jungle CP. I have gotten a few different opinions on what the average size for a jungle CP is and if my enclosure will be suitable.
I am planning on getting a 48Lx24Dx12H cage from Animal Plastics so was looking for input if it would be all right for a jungle CP. I know they prefer more height in cages but I have seen people house them in bins as well, so just looking for any info. This will be my second snake, wanted something a bit bigger but not huge and a carpet looks perfect for that.
Thanks for any help!

Nope... that won't do, the height is too low. It should be at least 24 high for a carpet python. Actually the taller the better for Morelias....
If you are going to go that height then you might as well save money and just use a tub instead of a viv.

12 inches is really low.

I think the absolute lowest for a carpet would be 18in, but like red ink said, morelia do better with more height.

I'm building mine a 4x2x3, like others said 18-24 is minimum.

i agree with the above
a 4ft x 2ft x 2ft viv would be the smallest i'd use for an adult carpet python
personally i do not agree with keeping carpet pythons in tubs
but REDINK is correct in saying,a viv the size your planning on using, would be no better than a tub
i'm not having a go at you,or trying to be cheeky
cheers shaun
P.S.i look forward to pictures of your jungle when you get it
Been looking around a bit more and found this Boamaster cage that seems pretty good. It is 4 x 24 x 19 and made out of melamine. I have not read too much about melamine but I have seen more then a few cages made out of it so I am assuming it will work. I am thinking about irian jaya carpets as well as jungle because I know they are a bit smaller then a jungle. I think I have my heart set on some type of CP so if I end up getting a jungle and it is on the larger side I can always upgrade to a 4x2x2 and use the old one for a new CP.
One more question to see what my timing would be like, what is a good estimate for when a jungle will be getting to large for a 4ftx24x19. I know different snakes grow at different rates so just looking for a ballpark.
Thanks for all the feedback so far, want to make sure my future carpet will be comfortable!

For an adult jungle, id go at least 3' X 2' X 2' with a basking shelve or perch.

Melamine wont do, Carpets need some humidity and any humidity will kill melamine over time
Also for what its worth, my jungles exhibit far more arboreal behavior than my coastals do, So for a jungle at least anything less than 2 ft simply wont do
for a jungle id say 4'x 1' 6"x 3" is nice
actually a cage that size would make just about any carpet happy i think

i keep carpet pythons into double figures and ALL of them are in melamine vivariums
carpets have NO specific humidity requirements,so theres no need to mist or create a humid enviroment
not being cheeky pal, merely pointing out, that the op will have NO problems using melamine vivariums
when building the vivariums from the flat pack they come in,its a good idea to use silicon, along all the joint edges before you screw the tank together
this stops any bodily fluids seeping out the tank

as long as they are NOT nervous feeders, you can put hatchling carpet pythons straight into a 4ft x 2ft x 2ft tank
the tank you have would be ok right up to sub adult hood (around 3 years of age)

Hmm Strange, I live in a relatively dry region, and my carpets tended to have very bad sheds, So i tend to keep the humidity around 65%, Havent had a bad shed since as a result, Melamine does not work for me
Also you never come across as cheeky, and I'm well aware of you and your collection

I think most people who say carpets have no specific humidity requirements live in regions where they seldom drop below 50% ish humidity. In the winter here 20% is common so I keep the room my snakes are in at about 50-55% with a humidifier and they are 100% perfect shedders. So they don't need high humidity but there is a minimum of sorts there.

Yeah, in the UK we class carpets as needing "no humidity" but our average is around 45-60% :)

If you have the space and money, I would definitely provide any carpet with a semi-arboreal enclosure. Mine certainly love to perch, but it is not necessary for their health. A JCP could be housed its entire life in a 74 qt tub and be perfectly healthy.

But thats like buying an Ferrari and hiding it in a box. Carpets are awesome display snakes and a tub is just not right in my mind. Boa or ball python maybe (not me) but bot a carpet.
Just my $.02
I decided I am actually going to attempt to build my own viv so I can get the perfect dimension for a carpet. I have three weeks to build it before the white plains show and considering I have not really ever done any woodwork before, I will need all three of those weeks!:bouncy:

Lol. My above should read "not" a carpet. iPhone keyboards. Good for you how big you going?
Going to start with a 3x2x2 for now, the size seem a bit more manageable to build. If my carpet starts to outgrow it, well if I did it once, I can do it again but bigger.

I would say that viv size is fine. Its only 5 inches short in the depth department but more than long enough. Just cover the last foot or so to provide a little extra security.

if you go to 4x2x2ft that would do the carpet its entire life and save you having to build again mate

is a 3x3x2 tank big enough for an adult female irian jaya jag

my personal feelings is a 3x2x2,is a little small for any adult carpet
that said i know people who use 3x2x2ft tanks, with no issues
