I think Penelope is going into a shed

Or I hope that's what it is because her underside turned kinda milky.

I'm nervous! This will be my first shed!

It's gonna be fine, don't worry about it :D

That is a sign of a shed though, right? How long till she sheds?

This might be bad timing because I took her with me to my parents' house because I didn't know how long I'd be here and I don't trust the temperatures yet... But I have to leave by saturday night or sunday at the latest and it's a 3 hr drive. Will she be done then? I don't want to stress her out mid shed...

She has water and humidity is around 60%...

Yes that is a sign that she is going into shed. Next her eyes will get milky and then after a few days maybe even a week she will clear up. After she goes clear they normally shed in a few days but sometimes it takes a week.

Relax, you have a good 20+ years of that ahead of you so you might as well sit back and enjoy the mini vacation until she sloughs in a couple of weeks :)

Trollbie

So I can transport her mid shed?

lady_bug87

Trollbie

back home. I'm at my parents' house for a few days. I live 3 hrs away from here.

Gungirl

Yes she will be fine.

Trollbie
03-28-12, 10:56 AM
Ok just making sure. She didn't seem too stressed on the way up here.

But now she's doing her usual "I wanna come out" dance... She does it on the side of the tank that I happen to be on. If I move across the room, she'll follow me lol

You know snakes can be left alone for a few days right? They aren't like mammals

Trollbie
03-28-12, 12:10 PM
Yes. But I didn't know exactly how long I'd be gone, and I don't trust the temperatures at my house. I just bought a rheostat yesterday and as soon as I get my paycheck within the next couple days I'm buying a thermostat. But until then, it was better to take her with me. I also don't trust my housemates to keep an eye on the temperatures and humidity...

Trollbie it would benefit your snake to include a moist hide in her cage if you don't already have one? Just a simple container with moistened spagnum moss and a hole cut in it so she can crawl in, is all that's needed. It will help her to shed with no problems.

She has one of those reptile cave/den thingys on her cool side, and that's what she's been in since yesterday. I just had aspen in there, but since the humidity is high enough I would rather not disturb her by switching the aspen for moss :/ She had healthy sheds without moss in the store, so she should be okay now too. I misted around the cave a little too.

I checked on her this morning and her eyes are starting to get milky. The store said that it usually takes her a week from when she first starts showing signs, so hopefully it won't be longer than that.

It's always a good ideah to include a moist hide. That way you don't have to mist the cage which can cause other problems imo. By giving them an extra hide with moist moss, they can make the choices they prefer. They know better than we do. There's nothing wrong with 2 hides? Just my 2 cents. I'm sure she'll be fine, but giving her choices will make a better arrangement.

Won't hurt with an moist hide but an milk isn't really an problem sheeder long as the humidity is right maybe bump it up and your good to go

Trollbie
03-29-12, 07:20 PM
She has 2 hides :) The humidity is also pretty high already. I misted just in case, not because I needed to.

I'm for sure gonna keep a moss hide for my BRB baby, but I'll see how Penelope sheds this time because like I said, I don't want to disturb her by having to switch out the aspen for moss in that hide.

My parents are aquarists. There is like 3000 fish tanks in this house, so the humidity stays around 70%. And since it's warm in here too, I don't need to use the heat lamp, so the humidity is pretty much the same inside her cage as it is outside her cage.

in my years I only had one problem sheder and that was my coral snake go figure lol and I still don't know why and I never had to use an moist hide

Her eyes are definitely very opaque now. It looks kind of scary because if I didn't know any better I'd think she's dead...

Trollbie

It's hard for me to picture Penelope being aggressive based on her feeding behaviours lol. She just kinda does a circle or 2 around the mouse, smells it a couple times, and then just kinda starts eating. It's hard to tell if she actually started eating or if she just laid her head on the mouse...

But of course I'm not going to underestimate anything and take any chances...

theapexgerman
03-30-12, 02:16 PM
Well other members will know more than I do so I would wait for one of them now if it was 2 milk snakes I wouldn't do it

You need to Quarantine the new snake from your other snake. Look up threads on quarantining. Do not place your new snake next to your other one for a picture. Big mistake until after you have gone through a proper Quarantine.

Since I can't take Penelope to the vet this week, I'm just gonna take them both next week for their first exams.

03-30-12, 02:20 PM
Or whenever they're both done shedding...

Wait... if baby boy is going into a shed, will I even be able to take him home now? Or am I gonna have to wait till he's done.

Quarantine= not letting them be near each other as well as you handling one then the other. Anything that will be shared between the two has to be cleaned and disinfected otherwise you might as well not Quarantine.

Trollbie
03-30-12, 03:46 PM
I can't take them in 2 separate enclosures? The vet is kinda far from where I live so it's already a big hassle to go there in the first place. I was gonna take Penelope to a vet by my parents house since there's like 3 close-by, but I can't because she's about to shed.

Anyway, if I take them both to the vet, and they get a clean bill of health, do I still need to quarantine them?

Trollbie
03-30-12, 03:47 PM
They can be in the same room though, right? The cages aren't going to be right next to each other, but close enough so they can be hooked up to one thermostat

Lankyrob
03-30-12, 04:05 PM
They should be as far apart as physically possible, in different rooms if possible.

Always handle/deal with your current snake first, then wash hands etc before dealing with new snake. After dealing with a quarantined snake you should change your clothes, shower and disinfect.

Never use same tools for both current and wuarantined snakes etc.

Even with a clean bill of health now, illness can be present and not show itself. Most quarantine for at least three months if not six.

How far apart can you get them? If they are too close then it basically isnt worth bothering with the rest of the rules :(

I disagree here... Yes they need to be as far apart as possible but even if they have to be near you should still do your best at all the other rules. Not everything is air born. Most things you can still control via cleaning and disinfecting. I would just be as cautious as possible.

I am happy to agree to disagree but to my mind with quarantine it is all or nothing :)

Trollbie
03-31-12, 07:15 PM
They can only be a few feet apart. But they'll be separated by a sink, so I'll be constantly reminded to wash my hands.

My concern is that they both come from the same store, so if I have something to worry about, it may be too late anyway... :/

Lankyrob
04-01-12, 03:46 AM
A fewfeet isnt enough to stop mites, infection etc etc from cross contaminating. Evencoming from the same store there is no guarantee that either snake is going to be healthy.

A lot of times quarantine turns out to be a waste of time as the snakes are fine but there is always that one time when it is worth the time and effort.

I know for sure there is no mites at least... But what I meant that they are coming from the same place is that if there is something to worry about, it's too late. :(

Unfortunately one of my housemates is terrified of snakes and there is also a cat in the house so they have to be in my room :(
