I have 3 snakes, 2 cats, a ferret, a frog, an iguana, and a tarantula.

They all live in harmony for the most part in my studio.

Last night as I was sleeping, I awoke to slithering sounds. I look to see a black 5 foot snake scrambling across my floor with my 3 month old ferret hot on her tail.

That cracked me up.

Ridiculous.

Most of those animals should not be free-roaming.

The snakes, the ferret, the frog, the iguana, and the tarantula should all be in their own separate, individual enclosures. If you need convincing, here are some reasons why:
- one will eventually harm or eat another (i.e.: your ferret chasing your snake)
- you can't monitor their individual health statuses
- they all require different environmental conditions, none of which can all be satisfied in one room for all
- they are probably all stressed from co-habitation
- you can't monitor who's feces and urates/urine belongs to whom
I'm curious, though... what reasoning do you have for co-habitating all of them loose in your studio? I can't seem to find any good reason to do so.

If you've ever been to a zoo you'd understand it's better to create an ecosystem than to isolate an animal in a cage for life.

How would you feel in jail?

Animals die from stress due to boredome, over-stimulation, over-eating because of boredome, lack of companionship. Sound familiar? Go to the zoo.

By the way, my male black racer who is just a juvenile delinquent was perched on top of a 6 foot painting. When I got up to walk around he literally lunged himself at me to bite and fell on my carpet. My ferret just wants to play. Those snakes fear her and can fend for themselves.

Let animals be animals you high and mighty humans. This is supposed to be a comedy thread. Thanks for popping those happy bubbles.

You know what, i'm sorry, but letting those animals run loose in your home is a disaster waiting to happen. Your type of situation is the kind that makes the evening news, because one of your snakes, or your iguana has escaped, and you can't find it. If you cannot, or in your case, will not provide the proper enclosures and environment for your animals, please find someone that will.

Yes, it is better to create an ecosystem. But if your'e trying to keep one or all of your animals alive, you should remove their predators. The frog, the iguana, the tarantula, and the snakes are all at risk of being hurt or killed by each other or the ferret and the cats.

Animals also die from stress- which can be caused by constantly having to flee and find a safe place to hide, and running away from predators (such as your racer running away from your ferret). You won't be able to monitor each animal's health closely, and one might die and you won't have known why or the signs of illness.
Over-eating would only happen to your animals if you caused it. All of them depend on you to feed them. Feed them properly (right size and right feeding schedule), and they won't be overfed.
Reptiles do not need the stimulation that ferrets and cats need. In the wild, most prefer to stay exactly where they are unless they are threatened, in danger, or in need of hunting food. Everyone's reptiles on this forum live in their own separate, individual enclosures, and are happy and healthy. None of them are dying of boredom.
Reptiles also don't benefit from companionship. On the contrary, they are often stressed by it. Unless breeding, reptiles prefer to be on their own, and have solitary space to live in tranquilly. Co-habiting snakes together often results in the death of one, or both, from either stress, of one eating the other. This isn't a "maybe".. it's an "eventually."
All responsible reptile owners know that keeping their reptiles in individual, separate enclosures keeps the reptile safe, healthy, and happy. I hope you can begin to recognize that your animals could benefit from living in their own enclosures, and that the current situation you have them in is only a recipe for disaster.

Your cats and your ferret have each other for interaction, stimulation, and entertainment. But your reptiles don't need them.

Bradyloach

No problem with the ferret! Ferrets need social interaction! I would get 2 tho so they won't get bored in the cage. Reptiles aren't mammals they need heat

I did almost have a free roaming snake last night. Or so I thought.

She crawled into my sleeve and was just kind slithering around my body and then I didn't feel her anymore. I looked everywhere for like 15 min and no sign of her.

And then I realized she's still inside my sweatshirt... *facepalm*

The problem is, the HSUS isn't saving animals, they're killing them in mass amounts.

Word...

In my defense, my sweatshirt has the stretchy band thing at the waist like it does on the sleeve, so she was just chilling in the part that like hangs over the band so she was inside, but not against my skin so I didn't feel her.

It makes sense...

As far as the HSUS killing animals, they'd rather spend the money from donations on themselves than expand their shelters, and instead of turning people away who drop off animals they can't house, they euthanize them. This is only a small, sad portion of their corruption.

They should start making people sign contracts to own an animal...

None that I know of. I mean contracts like this animal is forever yours unless you find a good home. If you fail to do so, you go to jail or pay a huge fine which will go straight to shelters and such.

BarelyBreathing
03-25-12, 01:29 PM
Petco and Petsmart require you to sign contracts, as does every animal shelter. Most of the better rescues and breeders microchip the new pet and make you sign a contract stating that if you can no longer take care of your animal, then it either has to go back to their facility or to an owner that THEY approve first.

Gungirl
03-25-12, 01:30 PM
Petco and petsmart are worthless contracts. They make you sign them if you are buying a live feeder mouse also. They mean nothing. They only do it so that if you bring the animal back they have the info they want.

I feel like those aren't even contracts...

BarelyBreathing
03-25-12, 01:36 PM
Yeah, pretty much. I've had to be like "I'm buying this animal to kill it" and they've still made me sign. But a lot of good rescues and breeders enforce those contracts, and people have ended up in court and the animals taken because of a breach of that contract.

Indeed. Killing is a must to survive. I had to buy 2 adorable mice from petco. Signed a contract, wanted to keep them but they had to be snake food.

People believe they are dieties above all else on earth. No every living creature from the ant to the bunny to the eagle are all dieties. People are the most stupid about it because we believe we are the chosen ones. The meek shall inherit the earth.

regarding snakes the above is completely incorrect...!!

i've heard of cats eating corn snakes

i don't know what type of snake you have but.....

my carpet pythons would kill and eat,a cat or a ferret

if your seriously letting all these animals free roam, then at some point their will be deaths

thats if this threads not a wind up

very irrasponsible animal keeping on your part and a complete lack of research

re zoo's
they do create ecosystems but ONLY WITH COMPATABLE ANIMALS,WITH THE SAME HUSBANDRY REQUIREMENTS.....!!!

cheers shaun

yes you do, the dogs were circling the aquarium barking like crazy, and Ace knocked over a box of stuff we are donating to the local food pantry.

Eons ago when I was co-owner of a pet shop, I use to go to schools & such for pet seminars. I was doing a group of 3rd graders with my hingeback tortoise. I'm demonstrating on how they close their shell up for protection. Paying more attention to the class and not what I was doing. I poked the tortoise with my finger and she closed up on my finger. Instant pain with facial expressions were shown with lots of laughter from the crowd. One little guy in the front, very sadistically asked for me to show it again. That week I had many of those kids come in with there parents to meet the guy who told them not to do this as I did it. Thank goodness they learned that expression, "Do as I say - not as I do".
