View Full Version : Crestie question
Sid, my crestie that I got a week ago has not eaten for me yet. I have offered him newborn dubia roaches, but he runs from them and I have offered him CGD, but he doesn't show any interest. What should I do?

What is his set up like? what was he being fed before you got him?

This is a common concern with new crestie owners. Because they eat at night, it is very rare to actually see them eat the CGD. As long as the gecko is pooping, you know it has to be eating. As long as your crestie isn't losing weight and you're still finding new poop in the enclosure, I wouldn't worry too much.
As far as the dubia roaches, some cresties just don't seem to be interested in bugs. I stopped offering insects to my cresties after a while because they would only eat maybe one or two and ignore the rest.
Also, since you've only had him a week now, he could still be adjusting to his new surroundings. Make sure he has lots of places to hide in his cage to make him feel more comfortable and make sure you don't handle him at all until you're sure he's eating.

What kind of CGD are you offering? Do you know what he was fed before? I have had cresties not eat the CGD I offered because they were raised on a diff brand. You kinda just have to tough it out! They will eat eventually. You can try crickets too.
But like Reptile65 said, they eat at night and so little that you may not even notice.

It's a 12 x 12 x 18 tub with paper towel substrate, a tree and some greenery.

I'm not seeing any poop at all.
He has plenty of places to hide and I'm not handling him.

Repashy, that's what he was eating for the breeder. I can't stand crickets.

You can also try different flavors of CGD. The peach and mango flavors seem to be the most popular with my cresties. I still think he may just need some more time though...
I don't think this is any particular flavor, but it smells like banana to me.

It took forever for me to see my crestie (Gary) eat when I got him I had the same concerns as you. I would put his smoothie on a little dish and it would look untouched in the morning... but he's been alive and pooping for several years now so he's got to be eating!
Sometimes when i'm lucky he will lick the smoothie off the tip of my finger. Gary likes mashed up mango

The "Original" flavor is strawberry banana, but you can also order different flavors.

I just stumbled upon this now. Glad to hear he ate!
When I first got Rodney (my crestie) he would only eat bugs and baby food (what the silly pet store people fed him) Anyway, I slowly started mixing the CGD with his babyfood over about a month's time or so. Insects REALLY spoil these little guys, they will often go off their CGD if they think there is a possibility of a cricket in the near future.
Also, when he goes through one of his picky "refuse to eat" phases, I just take him out and dab CGD on his nose. He can't STAND it being there so he has no choice but to lick it off!
