View Full Version : Should I Worry?

My kenyan ate a pinkie on 3/14, and everything went well. Tried to feed her again this week on 3/21 and she wouldn't eat. Is it normal for these snakes to go more than 7 days between meals as juveniles? She is about 12 inches long and nothing seems to be wrong. Just wanting to make sure since I am new to this snake thing.

No need to worry yet. Offer her food again next week and hopefully she'll eat for you.
In the meantime, double check your husbandry to make sure everything is spot on.
Yes. Your snake obviously didn't get the memo that she needs to eat every seven days or her owner get stressed. Type up a nice note and pin it to her bin outlining that in order for you to remain stress-free, she'll need to eat every seven days without fail.
Should do the trick.

I check it every few days. Warm side is around 90-95 where the UTH is and the cool side is about 75-80. Have her on aspen, about 2-3 inches deep, small water dish on the cool side. Humidity is about 35%. I think the issue might be she is getting ready to shed, she is rubbing a lot but hasn't started getting dull or blue.

Update, she still hasn't eaten. She isn't losing weight or anything, should I worry? She is active and every thing in the tank seems fine. We did switch on the AC because here in South Carolina it is getting really hot already, could that cause an issue? The humidity goes up and down based on the time of day, is there anyway to keep it the same all the time? Its not a huge change, never getting above about 50%.
I just want to know what to try, I want to make sure I am doing everything I can for her to be healthy.
Thanks!

A non eating snake can be stressful. Your temps sound ok. A little more info...How are you feeding? Live or frozen?
I find Kenyans will ALWAYS take a live food item.

Frozen, I thaw them for a while, then heat them in warm water.

Could be as simple as offering live like Mykee said. Have you tried live yet?

I haven't tried live yet, I am looking for a local place to get one to try. This all started when we switched the AC on in the house, could that affect her until she adjust?
Like I said, she is active and not dropping weight, so I don't think it is anything serious. I usually attempt to feed on Tuesdays, so I will see how it goes.

Tried again yesterday, she would move toward the pinkie and push it around, but no luck. She is still active and hasn't lost weight.

Not if the snake isn't losing weight.
@op
How long have you owned her? How many feedings have you done? Where are you feeding her? Do you have anyway of checking the pinkies temp. Your snake definitely sounded interested.

Got her in early March. She ate once for me about a week after I got her, I have offered food every 7 days since then. I thaw the pinkies to get them to room temp, and then warm them in hot water or under a heat lamp. I feed her in a container I bought just for that purpose. Its a tupperware type bowl.
Since we have turned the AC in the house on, she hasn't eaten. She is showing more interest now, could it just be some type of hibernation?
I keep a close eye on her to make sure there isn't anything wrong, but she seems content and happy.

Could it be thta the AC is drying out the enclosure? What is the humidity like in the viv? Also have you checked the temps in the enclosure since the ac is on?
Final point, if you are removing her from the enclosure to feed, with the ac on it may be too cold for her in the house, if it is too cold she wont eat as she needs the higher temps for digestion. :)

I agree with Rob. Try feeding her in the enclosure. Also check the temp of the pinky before you feed.

I will try feeding in the enclosure this week.
Nothing has really changed with the enclosure with the AC on. Humidity is about 30%, temps are about 95 on hot side, 80 on the cool side.

Still no luck, she is still healthy, not dropping any weight or anything. Having noticed any mites or anything. Are there any feeding tips? Do they react to dipping the pinky in something to scent it? I have heard chicken broth? Still an active snake, I don't handle her much right now to help keep stress down.

Mabye you need to shake it around a little bit more if you aren't doing that. My new corn won't eat unless he see's me moving the pinkie mouse around.
