my ij x jag carpet has always done this since i got her begining of january 2012 and i was looking around on the net but couldnt find anything useful so i figured id ask the experts.
like i said i have had diamond about 3 months and she has always made a breathing sound since i got her. i dont notice it unless i am holding her and she is fairly close to my head/ shoulders, i cant hear it if she is on my lap. it just sounds like she is breathing and it sounds like regular breathing not labored or out of sequence. she doesnt have bubbles or runny nose ect. like the snakes ive seen with an RI, so i dont think it is that although it could be possible.
i have kept her temps about 85 degrees F - 90 degrees F and her humidity stays about 65%-70% and i allow a dry out period every day.
am i doing anything wrong? and what do you think it is?

I have a carpet that does this everytime I hold her. Carpets are just a little more vocal sometimes, especially when you hold them. I've checked temps, humidity, stuck sheds in nostrils, and couldn't figure out what it was. I saw on another forum that is dedicated to carpets, a lot of the keepers on there have also experienced this. Its nothing to worry about as long as there is no RI present.

Ive heard my carpets make so many noises now its ridiculous, most vocal snake ive ever owned, hissing, wheezy hissing, nasal chirping, iv even heard a throaty vibrating sound that sscared the crap out of me and got the culprit sent to the vet for a full check up

oh good! i was very worried but thought that it may just be a carpet related thing with how their heads are made with the shorter snout.
thanks for the info that takes some weight off of my shoulders.
thanks logan

My carpets breath loudly as well. My female has spooked a houseguest once or twice. They say "oh man shes pissed " and the I show them how small the holes are they breath through and how they are exerting themselves holding onto me or them and they calm down. Thats a lot of wind going in and out of there especially in a bigger snake. So of course they make noise :)
My boy Sync is always talking while he cruises lol. Pretty normal I think.

Yep. Mine does too. I had a friend over earlier for a visit and he's in love with my carpet. He was holding her and heard her loud breathing and thought she was hissing or something lol. Mine is definitely vocal when she's out.

I was holding a 6ish foot jungle who was quite the talker too. Some snakes just do that it seems.

It something many Carpets do that very normal. I have a 8.5 foot Jungle that is going on 11 years old that as done it since she was a baby. The first time i heard it she got take to the Vet. He said she was perfectly healthy. That's when i did some research and found out it normal in Carpets. Mine always does it when she knows she going back in her cage. I have a couple others that do it now and then.

:D It's true haha!

Both my wife and I swear we heard ours chirping on Saturday night when we had him out. Too funny. This is our first snake, and we are considering getting another snake. I thought about trying something other than a carpet, but I'm way too in love with what we know about them so far to even want to venture out to anything else. Another Morelia it is ;)

carpets have NO specific humidity requirements
room humidity here in the uk is around the 50% mark
carpets, especially young carpets, can get a bit hissy.i've found it to be a,nervous or defensive related thing
if there are NO respiritory symptoms, then i'd putt it down to,a carpet being vocal
i have a basking spot of 86 F to 89 F,cool end mid 70's F,to low 80's F
other reasons for more of a whistling noise, can be old shed retained up a nostril, this usually comes off, with the next shed
scaring from a previously bad respiritory infecton, can also cause the nostril to whistle
imo, yours is more hissing/puffing as a vocal respose
i've had a small amount of carpets, that got hissy, when ever they were handled, while being transfered into a tub, during their tank clean
for now,all i'd do is,just keep an eye out,for any accompanying respitory symptoms.i wouldn't worry too much
cheers shaun
