View Full Version : I'm such a idiot!
I had company over and I showed them my Bearded Dragon and when I went to put him up, I didn't put his lights back on. Well, I turned the light of, but the night bulb flipped on (I have everything on timers) and just about caught the carpet on fire. Thank God I walked in there when I did or it would have caught fire and I would have either lost some animals to the flames or to the smoke. Anyway, my heart just about jumped out of my chest when I walked in and smelled something burning and took me a minute to figure out what it was.

I'm confused- how did it almost catch fire?

He set his lights on the floor and left them there. The timers turned them on while still on the floor. You got lucky. Bet you never do it again :)

Ohhh got it
Wow, glad it all worked out!!
Man that was scary. I'm going to have to buy a fire extinguisher for the reptile room. I have also got to pay more attention. Maybe this could be made a sticky so other people can learn from it.

Glad you caught it in time.
I did something similar myself. Don't beat yourself up over it, just consider it a learning experience and you'll remember next time. :)

I agree, it happened, your heart jumped, you fixed it and you WONT do it again as it is now burned into your memory forever!
But I'm glad everything (except the carpet of course) is ok!!

So did you set the light in the cage or on the floor of the room? If you set it on the room's floor what does tile have to do with anything?

I left a light on top of a Lexan lid once....that did not smell very good. I came back up about 30 minutes later and smelled warm plastic- found the light and put it back on the cage where it should go. It had melted a browned, bubbling spot in the Lexan of the other cage. Yuck!

A lot of carpet now comes in tiles, which are easy to replace if stained (or burned in this case). Down side? High traffic areas don't stay glued down as well. Glad everything turned out ok, and don't beat yourself up. Learn from it, be grateful it ended the way it did, and you'll never do it again. :)

Lights are dangerous. I learned they must be very secure when my Iguana got out and knocked his off the enclosure onto the hardwood floor, leaving a nice crunchy black circle.

AHAAH this is so funny because I did the same thing almost!
Our beardie was set up behind our at the time vinyl couch at the cottage and we went to take the lid off the tank. His light was hanging off a hook thing and I swung it over the couch and proceeded to take the lid off and clean etc etc. the couch started smoking and it melted a bit but it was noticed and the light was swung back over the tank XD

Your post always confuse me because your signature is so close to Norm's! You should spend more time here.:)

Not to rub salt in your wounds but does your title really say " I am such (a) idiot?" Lol...

Yep everything turned out fine thankfully, but there is a 2 x 2 inch hole in my carpet now. Going to have to get one of the those carpet tiles and attempt to fix it.

Yes, the floor of the room. The tiles are to set on the floor for me to set the lights so that doesn't happen again.

I'm not sure what the big deal about this is.

Korbin, I'm a lurker who learns a lot from on here, but I don't post much. I'll try to be better about it. And to the OP, tiles to set the lights on are a great idea! Just be careful, if they're vinyl they will melt, and if they're ceramic they could crack.
