Hey there... New member here, currently living in Baltimore, MD. Looking into getting my first snake and currently doing research. Really interested in carpet pythons, but not sure if I want something quite that big. Hoping to find some snake nerds locally who are willing to show off their snakes so I can get some more experience before I jump into anything!

Welcome, carpets are awesome! If you're concerned about the length of the snake you can always get an Irian Jaya male they top out at about 5 feet.

To help us help you figure out what snake would be the best fit for you, it would help if you answered these questions:

What are you looking for in terms of a new pet? Are you looking for something that is handleable, or something that is "look, but don't touch"?

How about size? What size is good for you, and how big of an enclousre can you provide?

What is your budget for this animal? How much do you want to spend on the animal itself and the initial set up? How much do you want to spend on it a week in feeding and bedding supplies?

What type of food are you willing to feed it? What resources do you have available?

How much time are you willing to take out of your day to take care of your reptile?

Can you provide expensive UV-B lights and fixtures knowing that the bulbs will need to be replaced every six months, or would you prefer an animal that doesn't require UV-B?

To help us help you figure out what snake would be the best fit for you, it would help if you answered these questions:

I would definitely prefer something handleable, I don't want to have to use a 10 foot hook and a bomb suit to change it's tank

Budget is not dead set, but I don't want to spend a ton of money right away. I know animals are expensive and the initial setup is minimal compared to the lifetime care budget.

Frozen rats or mice wouldn't be a problem. I don't necessarily have a problem with live food either, but it's more of a pain to have to get fresh rodents so I would rather not.

I can probably make space for up to a 75 gallon aquarium. Would prefer something that can be happy in something about 50gal or so.

UVB wouldn't be a problem if I fell in love with a particular snake that required it.

My first step after online research is to go to a show and handle some snakes and talk to people. There is one locally in August. I'll be there.

Just curious for those that have adult jungle carpets: How big of an enclosure do you have and what do you feet it and how often and at what cost? Also, if you use acronyms please define them--I am new to the hobby.

Mine isn't an adult yet but I'm building a 4x2x4 for him when he gets big, females might require a slightly larger enclosure.
