Hello,
Yesterday I went to buy fish food yesterday, and came home with a snake... So I'm very much a noob to snakes but I want to do everything right and I'm hoping this forum will help me do that!
My new baby is a Milk snake and her name is Penelope :)

Thank you everyone!
Penelope is somehwere between 50-70cm I think. I haven't measured her yet but she's for sure less than a meter. They said she won't get much longer. Is that true? I'm not sure what subspecies she is either :/. And they told me she's probably 2-3 years old max, but they're not sure about that either. If anyone of you might be able to guesstimate, that'd be awesome!
Here she is!

There are clips you can buy that will keep the screen lid secure, i use them on the tanks i keep a few of my Kenyan Sand Boas in. They can be a pain to clip on, but it's better than having to look for an escaped pet :)

I couldn't tell you that only way that would help is how often he/she sheds if he sheds often its younger if he sheds not so often he's older but that's just a rough way to tell and make for sure you get thoses clips to milks are the best at escaping lol the clips around me cost like a few bucks for 2 of them can you take a pic of his belly?

They said she sheds every 4-6 weeks? I could be way off! I'm going back there today so I'll ask again to make sure.
And I'll take a belly pic when I get home and for sure I'm getting those clips or something.
Can you guys show me pics of your tanks/cages? I want to decorate, but I only know how to decorate a hermit crab habitat and a fishtank lol.

How often do old ones shed? I'm fine with her not being young but I'd like to have her for some time :) I do know that she just shed very recently.
So do they bellies indicate something?

Yup could be its hard to tell a lot of the subspecies there's a few different subspecies of my arizona mountain king the only way to tell them apart is by there bands or by the belly.ok so here is the tank I put my nelson in when I clean his cage its a temp cage just till I'm done cleaning his permant cage but he has 1 hide log and one water bowl in his permant cage he has 2 hide logs a water bowl and a tmep and humidity gauges but you can use this temp cage as a demo here it is

Ok so basic and simple is all they need? I still have to get her a hide or 2. I just don't like the plasticky ones and I was told that a log is gonna mold and stuff. Do you have that problem? Also what bedding is that? I just have aspen in there but yours looks cooler! Would she appreciate some plastic plants or branches to climb on? Or is that just asking for her to find a way to escape. Lol
theapexgerman
03-12-12, 12:07 PM
yea I have a waterfall in his permant cage so add some plastic plants if you want it won't huet and as for the log molding I never had a problem and I use repti-bark aspen perfectly fine but I love reptibark you can even reuse the stuff but get a temp gauge and a humidity gauge and that's bout it milks are hardy snakes just like corns and kings lol
Trollbie
03-12-12, 12:30 PM
Cool.
How big is your permanent cage? I think I have a turtle waterfall type thingy that might work! I'll have to look for it and see what it actually is haha. I like having tanks that don't look boring but aren't overdone either, so I'll play around lol. And I'd much rather have a log than some ugly fake looking thing. Since the humidity is already high, I probably don't even need to mist her much, right? That would also help with the log not molding. Is there a good website for cheaper supplies? I only have a petsmart here and a couple small stores so the either selection sucks or the prices are way too high.

03-12-12, 12:34 PM
Um I Use bigappleherp a lot they got ok prices and good customer services my permant cage is ! 60 gallon you don't need one that big even the temp cage is a 5p gallong tank and as for misting I don't mist my milk or king the water bowls is good enough and if you want get this stuff called corkbark pretty pricy but I locve the stuff

Yeah I'm not planning on going bigger gallon wise. But eventually, especially of she gets bigger still, I'll get a 20g long instead of tall. Or I'll trade with my parents lol. They're a little too crazy with their fish hobby lol. I could easily get a 55g tank that they're getting rid of, but I'm about to graduate college so I'll probably be moving quite a bit in the near future so a 30g fish tank and a 20g snake tank are probably already too much to be moving around haha.
But if anyone needs a bigger tank, it's my fish D: so Penelope is gonna have to enjoy what she's got now haha
theapexgerman

Feeding is fun up to you if you want to do live or frozen thawed f/t is safer but I never had a problem with live but if you do feed live just watch the feeding since your not use to feeding I would go towards F/T more so than live

And because my Tuesdays and Wednesdays are the days I'm at work and school from 7am till like 9-10pm non stop so I won't have a chance to get the mouse. I'm pretty sure my housemates will kill me if I put a dead mouse in the freezer :/

Slow down.
You haven't even got your first snake to eat yet and you've got the idea of a potential new one in your head.
About what kind of milksnake you own, look up the taxonomy of the various subspecies you think she is. That should give you pics of what size and how many scales are in and around the head area. That is the better way than just guessing based off looks.
Lastly, to get your snake to eat. Don't handle it as much. Attempt to feed her again in 5 days and see how it goes.

Already gave up on that boa. I'm gonna get a python or a boa eventually but not yet. She is a Red. If handling was the problem, why would she get almost all of the mouse in and then spit it out? I didn't handle her before feeding.

Just a thought, and i may be wrong so please dont take offence, when you fed her were you hanging around her viv watching her?
My BP is a shy feeder, if i let him strike the rat and then walk away he will eat fine, if i hang around his viv or try to get pics he will most often leave the prey and come back to it overnight - its just a thought :)
