View Full Version : Picking Up A Carpet

After alot of phone tag and hits and misses, I'm finally able to pick up a carpet from someone I met through work. I've always wanted a carpet. I would prefer a baby but this girls needs to be rehomed and I'm a sucker for these. He didn't want to give her to just anyone and wanted to make sure she goes to an experienced keeper that will give her a good home.
Although she is his first snake, he's her second owner. He says he's had her for a couple of years and she was a nice size then so we're not sure of her age. She's around 6ft long. She's only bitten once, which he says was his fault as she was in feed mode and he smelled like food. Other than that, she's tame and takes handling well. His wife handles her, which he told me says alot about the snake. He says he feeds her about once every 10 days or so, one live rat (think he said medium). I have zero experience with carpets so I really don't know if this is good for her so if it's not, someone please tell me how to correct it.
He says she's a jungle carpet, but her bloodlines don't matter to me. She's a carpet and one that needs a good new home. That's what I'm here for. :D
Any advice or suggestions you guys can give me about their husbandry and temperaments would be appreciated. I want to make sure she settles nice since we'll be moving her again in a week or so when we move.
I'm off to buy another large tub for her since I have been procrastinating since I told the guy I'd take her. I think I need another water bowl too. I'll take some pics if/when I can and post them up.

FEeding every 10 days is fine for an adult carpet, i would try to switch to f/t tho - most carpets are eating machines so shouldnt be an issue!! I feed mine around 10-14 days with a f/t rat that is about 2-3 times his girth (sometimes a bit bigger if thats what they have).

A medium rat is fine for her but depending on her girth she might be able to take a large. Carpets are so much fun to keep and are very beautiful snakes.

She's really sweet. Doesn't mind being handled at all. Quite the curious creature. She kinda periscopes like a royal but straight up. lol I don't have any experience with these guys and she's really long but quite slender. I didn't think they were this slender.
They gave me a 10gallon tank to transport her in (I forgot to take a tub with me) and a UTH as well as a lamp. I've got a new tub for her that's more appropriate for her size as well as a hide and new water bowl.
She's settling in very nicely. Tomorrow's feeding day for my animals so I'm going to offer her a f/t rat, although they've always fed her live. If she doesn't take it I'll wait a couple of days and try live.
They named her Halo and it's not certain she's actually female. Here's a few cell pics I snapped before putting her into her new home. Any suggestions, advice, or observations you guys can give would be appreciated. I have zero experience with these so any info would be helpful and greatly appreciated.

I always hate to use these words but use the search as there are many threads here with all the info you ever need.
Shes nice looking. Looks like a Jungle in the pic. She is full grown or close to it. My female JCP is 7.5 ft and considered very large for a jungle. She should do a large rat with ease. Carpets are great curious and fun. Enjoy and good on you for taking her in. Keep her for life!!

She looks really sweet especially as exemplified in this pic and yes, Carpets in general are long and slender. She looks great. :)

I second this. They are an amazing snake to have. Before I had one, I didn't think they'd be for me, but now I can't help but want more.. they are genuinely adorable ALL the time lol

So true. We love our carpets. Best all around snake you can buy. Never boring. Even asleep they look busy. Awsome patterns and no 2 are the same. Curious and adventurous. Easy to care for with a wide temperature allowance and low humidity concern. Also even full grown they are not likely to be to much for solo handling. I recomend carpets for everyone. I love how non snake people think they look dangerous at first then fall in love with their nature after a short handling session. Great snakes all around.

She's definitely a dream! As I said, I have no experience with these animals but it's been on my 'want' list for years. She has no issue with being handled at all and seems to really like not being confined. She doesn't act the least bit stressed when out nor leary of human contact. Out of my collection she's the most curious. She's definitely not a lap snake. So far I'm very happy with her.
I'm going to really enjoy this one :D

I offered her f/t medium rat yesterday and she took it :D The previous owners had only fed her live so I wasn't sure if she would switch easy. And since this was her first feeding with me, I didn't know what to expect for feed mode, so I just kinda dropped the rat in her tub and shut the lid. No zombie rat dance for her lol She did immediately snap into feed mode, although just watching her through her tub, she doesn't seem to have as an aggressive feed mode as my dumerils. Anyway, it took her a bit to find it, but once she did, she took it quickly. :D
I saw one of the previous owners today at work. He asked how she was doing and mentioned again that he and his wife wants to come visit to see all my animals. I know his wife was upset that they were giving her up, but both are really glad they found me and that she's got an excellent home now.
So far, she has been an excellent animal and exceeds every little ideal I had about having a carpet. I'm very happy with her!
