Yup, I picked up two spanking new Boaphiles and they arrived here in my home in Miami FL for when Kaybe & Pika come home with me this May.

When they arrived

What they look like now...
They're both going to have the identical set up, except Pika's will have smaller and more hides since he's still fairly small and I don't want him to be overwhelmed by the open space.

Kaybe especially loves his half-log hides since it's what he's always had, and he loves to sit with his head poking outside of it at all times, so I've decided to get half-logs for his new home too. Pika also uses half-logs, so he'll have some too, but with more hiding spots because he's younger.

Tomorrow I'll play with the thermostat and humidity and see how well it keeps, to get everything in perfect shape for when they come down :D

Uh-oh! You mean they're empty at the moment?! Now that's a tempting situation - I don't know that'd I be able to resist not filling them with something :D

Nah, the empty cages will be in Philly, and it would be sooo expensive to ship them down. I'm going to try and sell them before I go. ;)

They look beautiful.
Just so you know though, I was over at a buddies place who has 80 or so of those, and the locking hinges on the inside are so rusted out that he has a difficult time opening and closing them. TERRIBLE design flaw. Just a heads up.

They're black steel

We are now offering more eye pleasing hinges at the same time. These black steel hinges are available

*shrugs* I'll keep an eye on them. But overall I am totally pleased with my new cages :D

Wouldn't a coat of nailpolish fix that problem? Pain in the butt for 80 cages, but for 2 it's shouldn't be a problem.... Very unfortunate that they went for aesthetics over quality... what's the point of a cage with door that won't open... just another pedastal...

Oh good advice! I'll coat them tonight

That wont solve the issue.. that will only coat the outside of the hinge. The issue is the pins on the inside of the hinge will rust and then make opening and closing hard.

Ah, well... I'll just keep an eye on them. Hopefully they'll be fine

I didn't realise the whole mechanism was made of that metal... That really blows... What about a rust inhibitor like CP90?

That would work but I would be concerned with putting a chemical in to a snakes viv. You would need to reapply that once in a while also..

This is what one of mines looks like i would open the cage and show you from the other side but you can see Sassy wants food lol

Wow I love Sassy!! How have I not seen her yet? Gorgeous Burm!
Now back the the subject... I don't think I want those chemicals near my snakes either, so knock that suggestion. Wonder if there's a way you could use Zinc... Or replace the pin maybe? There has to be a way to prevent the rust from happening...

The only real solution would be to take out the hinge and all non stainless steel metal and replace it with stainless steal.

I had to replace the hinges on one of mine and have another that needs to be replaces. The problem i been having is finding a replacement lock.

Gungirl

I would email the company that makes them and look into replacement hinges and locks through them.Specify that you only want stainless steel to avoid this issue again. I would request they replace them for free due to poor design.

I agree with Kat , i was looking to order some myself , i think i will call and see if they would just put stainless on mine .
