View Full Version : Ahhh! My first escape in years!!
So my new little hoggie is a run away:(
Last seen, last night.
Its been 24 hours and he is nowhere to be found.
I have hot spots with hides all over the pace
f/t pinkies and rats all over the place
flour trails all over the place
Any suggestions on where 5 inch hoggie would go is more than appreciated
:(
The few I have had get out over the years have always been found in the bathroom.Warm and humid..just a thought.
I have my snake room pretty sealed off but he is the smallest snake I own so it is a possibility. I have checked already but i am letting the hustle and bustle calm down for a bit, maybe he will feel safe making a move. I will definitely check bathroom again though, thanks

Check the smallest, tightest, darkest places you can find

When my snake escaped he was found in my mom's sock drawer :p
But that was a 4 foot snake, not 5 inches :sorry:

Is there carpet? Check under the edges and near baseboards. Pretty much like someone else said and any small dark place!
I live in a 110 year old farm house...the whole house is small dark cracks lol
Don't think he could have made it to the sock drawer
ripped up the carpet in the room, nothing.
Gawd this sucks!
thanks for the suggestions, keep em coming

Also, find out how he got out ASAP. Fix whatever made his escape possible. Do it now.

Ok glad you fixed the problem. Sounds like you need to secure that lid more. Don't underestimate the strength of the wee little ones!!
Have you searched his entire enclosure and dug up all the substrate? sometimes they can hide in the little corners and it'll appear like he's missing.
yeah he is im a little tub and it has been dumped out. gone :(

I use industrial velcro to secure tubs, they're too "easy" to escape even with latches imo
hopefully you find him :(
check heaters, computers, etc. they all give off heat, obviously.
if you have any reclining chairs, check inside those but be SUPER careful opening/closing them!

I am so sorry this happened and definitely empathize for you. I'm not sure what thread it was in, but someone posted about making a trap, I think it was a plastic bottle with something on top so the snake could get in but not out. I'm sorry I can't remember what the title of the thread is. Hopefully someone else can direct you to it. Best of luck to you! I hope the little guy shows up for you.
I'm so sorry! Sounds like you've done all you can do, although my corn snake book suggests the following ideas:
Place live baby mice in a bucket filled with substrate and a hide from the cage so the snake recognizes its own smell. The idea being they smell the food, eat, and then snug down in the bedding to digest.
The other way is to fashion a sort of "fish trap" for the snake so he can crawl in but can't crawl out. Take a piece of PVC pipe and 2 pieces of stiff paper. Roll the paper into cones and cut out a hole big enough for the snake to crawl into. Tape the cones inside the PVC pipe so the point of the cones point inside. This way when the snake crawls in, he can't find the opening easily because he'll be bumping against the bottom of the cone with no opening. Lay the trap along any room perimeter; it's more likely he'll be moving around walls and not in the center. You can go a step further and bait the trap either with food odor or live bait.
Can't say from experience these techniques work, but it's advice from a published source (Kathy and Bill Love).
Hope you find him soon....

That sucks. Every bit of advice I would offer you, you've already done, though. I hope you find your snake soon.

Just wondering how you made out . Did you find your snake ok ?
Hey guy's sorry for the delay in answering, I needed a little break.
No unfortunately no snake :( Not giving up though I still have my fingers crossed.
Thank you all for your suggestions and follow up's.
He may still show up! I've heard stories of escapees showing up a month later.. good thing snakes can live a while without food..

My last royal escaped and was gone for months. After we had given up hope of finding her, she appeared again right in plain sight and almost got stepped on. She was dehydrated and the vet told me to what to do until I could get her in the next day for a check up. Other than still being a little dehydrated she had a good check up.
Don't give up hope. He can still turn up at any time. :)

Yeah I know, my boyfriend had a baby boa escape in the house for a little over a year when he was a child. It showed up wrapped around the bed post of his parents bed lol. The scary thing was it had almost doubled in size! He explained to his mom that it was a good thing it was gone for so long because it lived off the mice in the house, that why it was so big. She never had a problem with him owning snakes again.

Oh yeah, every step taken in my house has been with our heads down and looking around :)

Check hampers, too! I thought (given his size) Vermicelli couldn't get out of my room with the door shut, so when he escaped a couple months ago, I mostly just looked in my room. He ended up being in my younger sister's hamper behind another shut door

Oh I do!! It takes me twice as long to sort laundry because I go though every piece of clothing individually.
