Why put a box in a box? Why not just place incubation substrate on the bottom if the incubatore and seal the top

That's deep. Real deep. Or I might be a little slow..... explanation please.

Thanks Kevin, this place would be dull without you.
My understanding is its easier to achieve a constant temperature/humidity.., bit all this can be achieved in a well sealed incubator I would think.

I am with you now. I have never understood why people feel the need to use separate boxes or deli cups inside of the incubator. I have absolutely no experience with incubation nor do I plan on having any. I can't say anything one way or the other.

As for that dull comment, I guarantee there would be alot less bull to wade through if I wasn't here. :) Gotta keep it deep somehow!

I'm sure egg boxes would help contain a neo.

But where would it go if the incubator is sealed?

The heating element.

Isn't that above them?

Brain fart!

I had a bearded dragon I was looking to breed and was using that angle in this scenario. Yes I guess the hatchling snake could climb onto a heating element.

also you may have eggs from 2 females that you want to be able to tell who's eggs are who's. Putting them in a labeled container inside the incubator allows you to be able to do that.

Nice point

I'll be taking a week vacation and I think I'm going to plug in my old styrafoam incubator and monitor the temps and humidity

If you're talking about what I think you're talking about, I'll explain. If you're not, disregard and call me and idiot. :D

Breeders separate the eggs into separate deli cups because when they have had more than one clutch of the same species, they can mark and monitor each one easier.

If you're talking about a box over another box with water on the bottom, it's to maintain better humidity.

im making mines out of a cooler im going to have heat tape on the bottom and on top of that water bottles to help keep the heat steady and it helps when i open the cooler to get the temp back up faster, putting the eggs in a little tub with vermiculite to help with humidity.

Why people put a box in a box it so when you do open it all the humidity and heat does not come out. and if you have more then one clutch to hatch.

So if I was to seal the incubatore and fill up with vermiculite I could just place the eggs on that? Providing that I limit the opening to a weekly Basis to let oxygen in the incubator it should be fine right?

I think I'm going to try it and leave it running for a month. The other concern I have would be the condensation build up an the top of the incubatore where the heat wire would and I would also be concerned About water droplets on the eggs.

I wouldn't worry about it. when I tested my styro-foam incubator this season, once I hit the right temps and humidity, it stayed fairly constant. I am going to drill an additional hole to hold tubing so I can fill the water reservoir with out opening the unit at all!!

What a great idea. I use a mini fridge as an incubator that is now full with my friends eggs and he's expecting 2 more clutches in a month or so.

Hopefully (fingers crossed) I am expecting 3 clutches this season.
