View Full Version : I shouldn't have... 0.1 100% dwarf burm

She was quite unhappy when she showed up and quite the handful to get into her new home. Unfortunately FedEx effed up, she was supposed to show up yesterday before noon and instead got here today around 10:30 am. So she's on RI watch for a while. Temps are 85 across the board and humidity is hovering around 80% to try and prevent any chance of an RI manifesting itself.
She's an 07 around 5.5 feet long. A HUGE thanks goes out to BarelyBreathing for directing me to her previous owner.

Thanks guys, I'm really excited to have her here, one step closer...
mean? Doubt it. Flighty? probably, They've got the big snake mentality but are stuck in a small snake body so they probably have insecurity issues. SD retics are like that. I'm gonna give her some time to settle in and then I'll get to know her. She needs a heavier water bowl too, I just threw that plastic tuperware tub in there until I can get something more appropriate.

lol yeah, just did both. Didn't notice it was full, I need to do a more thorough job going through and picking out which ones to delete. The 70 msg limit is REALLY irritating.

Yeah, I'm constantly deleting stuff to make space. I think the limit should be expanded to at least 200 :pissedoff:
What's the new dwarf burm's name?

yeah, 100 should be the minimum.
No name yet. I need to get to know her first. Heck my SD girl is still in the name-trial stage.

Yeah she is. They're great people, and come with my highest recommendations.
Awesome! Great looking snake man. So is it pretty much done growing or will it get any bigger?

She should be pretty much done growing, she might add on some inches and some pounds, but won't be much.

Woohoo! You are the dwarf snake man. :)
as much as I would love to have some of the full sized ones, they're simply impractical at this point in my life. I just simply don't have the room for an enclosure big enough for one yet. Plus I think my roommates would kill me. They don't know about this one yet.
I think I actually prefer the dwarf ones. Good things come in (relatively) small packages. :)

I made a pretty sweet snake hook out of a broken golf club :)

Lol, I think my dad has one I could steal from him, that's not a bad idea. Mind posting a picture or sharing how you did that?

Well that was interesting... She was NOT in a good mood this afternoon. Nearly got tagged a dozen times or so just changing her water. She seemed relatively calm until I had to move her to get her water bowl out and back in. I think its time I invest in a good quatlity hook because I know I don't want to be on the receiving end of her teeth.

Yikes, definitely something to consider getting (the hook). Imagine when she's bigger!

Is she going into shed? Both mine are pissy as hell when they're going into shed. They act like they're going to tag me when I clean their cages or even change their water when in shed.
I still suggest using a snake hook or something similar until she learns to trust you. She could just still be trying to adjust. What's the previous owner's experience with her with handling, etc?

I still need to get a real hook. I have one of those cheap retractable ones.
I think I'll ask for one for my birthday, it's coming up.

She shouldn't get any bigger. She's an 07 dwarf so she's pretty much done growing.
Is she going into shed?

She shoudn't be, she shed just before I got her. So its only been about 2 and a half weeks. She's not dull at all. Definitely gonna get a better hook, like Eli, I've only got the cheap little retractable one.
I'm stunned by how little I actually know about the dwarf burmese... somehow I just never got around to looking them up. Great looking girl there, she reminds me a lot of a little Afrock! They have very unique patterns and colours, I sure hope they get classified as a different species some day. I would love a mini rock python! I keep reading their temperament is way different that that of actual burmese pythons, but yours being an adult, perhaps it's calmed down some. Have you noticed many behavioural differences between her and a regular burmese python? Does she eat Rabbits? I need a picture of someone holding her lol... any more pictures would be sweet though!
millertime89

I've got a few more pictures, I need to get a hook before I even attempt to hold her.
Dwarf Burms are their own sub species, Python bivittatus progschai.
Her temper is definitely different from a regular Burm, she's VERY defensive. For the first week if I approached her tub I got a resounding hiss, and then there was yesterday...
I've heard they're similar in temperament to SD retics, flighty and nervous as babies, and can calm down but usually stay somewhat flighty. Almost like they have "small snake" syndrome.
She eats XXXL rats, although I haven't offered yet, I really do want her to settle down before feeding.
So what happened yesterday??? Lol. I was hoping they would have the same dopey gentle demeanour that regular burms have. Seems like they take more after the afrock though. I didn't realise they were python bivittatus progschai, I assumed they were molurus progschai.... Guess that means I can get one... if I can find it... Definitely throw some more pictures up if you're willing, she looks great I don't see them enough. Wonder how long until I have one now...

Depends on who you ask. Some people will tell you its python molurus bivitattus progschai, I've seen and read the study about why Burms and Indian pythons are different species, but not everyone agrees. I posted a thread where I touched on the topic in this section.
I spoke with the breeder she came from. She's actually a captive hatched dwarf burm like I suspected, but I didn't care so I didn't ask until now since she's an adult. According to the breeder she wasn't worked with much and her temperament isn't typical of dwarfs, although they do tend to be more flighty.
She also advised me to get gloves so she doesn't feel nearly as threatened by skin to scales contact, so I'm gonna have to get a new pair of those too.
I'd pick up an indian before anything else if they were available, and not CITES I in Canada. Truly amazing snakes! Would settle for a sri lankan I guess. I'm not sure I'd call them a different species then burmese python... but I guess location means a lot. But then you'd have to reclassify afrocks as well...
I see no problem with CH, they make great snakes. So many wild natural behaviours to observe in them. From what I've heard though, that temperament is a little more typical of dwarf burms, that they more resemble afrocks in temperament. I really need to look more into these guys again obviously.
As for gloves, I'd say don't bother.. though I've never used gloves before.. after a few bite attempts the next response will be flight, since they like to conserve their energy. At least that's what I've found, don't work on rosy boa's though:D

northern and southern African rocks are similar, they are classified as seperate species or subspecies depending on who you ask.
Gloves were specifically recommended to me by her previous owner.

tried feeding tonight, I was quite nervous, and she was too. She just curled up tighter into her corner and didn't even flick her tongue. She's obviously a very stressed girl, so I'm just going to leave her alone for a week and leave the cover over her tub.
Bummer for both of yuh, hopefully a little extra security for the next week will do the trick. Good luck!

thanks, I'm hoping that'll do the trick. At least the other 3 ate like always.

these were taken before she tried to take my arm off last week. For reference that bowl is 10" in diameter.

I didn't know where her head was one day, so I tapped her body. Her head poked out about 2 inches from my arm.

one more I guess, her in her corner before I changed her water bowl. I need a better set up for her, currently entertaining suggestions.

She's soo good looking, too bad she's so upset... Looks bigger then 5.5 feet lol, so hard to believe they're that small! As for the water dish, at work we had large plastic mixing bowls with flat bottoms, and then we hot glued an appropriate plastic dinner plate to the bottom of it upside down, like a pedestal of sorts... they were virtually tip proof when substrate was packed on top of the plate! Might work?
millertime89
03-16-12, 02:36 AM
I was thinking about hot gluing something like that to the bottom of the enclosure. Only problem is she's a soaker so I would want to put one on that side for her to soak in and another much smaller one for her to drink from.
Two water dishes are good for keeping humidity way up too! I wouldn't glue them to the enclosure though, just glue a big base on the bottom of each dish and bury that under the substrate. They've held up for some pretty heavy carpets and bredlis at work, I'll bet they hold for her.
millertime89
03-17-12, 12:13 PM
I currently have no problems keeping humidity up, she keeps spilling her water bowl, she's not doing me any favors.
Sounds like my blood lol.... I forgot that was a problem though haha, guess humidity would't be a problem...What about using something to connect the 2 water dishes? That way the other dish helps hold up the other one. Just hot glue a meter stick under them or something?
millertime89
03-18-12, 03:46 AM
I'm not sure yet, that's why I contemplated hot gluing the base and then using a second tupperware dish placed inside to easily remove and change out the water as needed.
I'm glad I'm not the only other person up at this ungodly hour.
I'm always up all night lol... What about a PVC ring glued to the bottom of the cage? Place the dish inside it, and she can't do nothing but drink or soak in it. Not really sure how big they get though.

hmm... thanks for the ideas, I've got some things to mull over.

Gloves? Check. Hook? Check. Long sleeves? Check. I was able to get her out and she didn't even strike, granted she was quite the handful and super flighty, but hey, at least now I can start working with calming her down.
Awesome! Can't wait to see she if she can become as docile as a normal burm. Good luck!

sigh... still not eating, another rat thrown away. She hasn't been moved, taken out, disturbed etc. other than the one day I mentioned above except to change her water.

Have you tried a different food source? One of my burms absolutely refuses to eat rats but she'll eat chicks. I've also tried rabbit pinks and she doesn't like them either. As soon as I can find quail I'm going to see if she'll take that.

I'm offering the exact thing the breeder I bought her from offered her.
millertime89
04-10-12, 01:20 PM
still hasn't fed. But she was at least interested last time, however she's in shed now so that may have been why she refused. I'm also getting some jumbo rats for her this weekend. I've been offering mediums to this point because a) that's all I had and b) I wanted her to eat for me before I offer her her normal sized food.
I'm actually pretty sure I heard the beginnings of her rubbing her skin off when I was getting ready for work this morning. I'm hoping that's the case.
