I would look into coastals, olives, and boa constrictors if I were you, they are great larger snakes that are easier to care for then a burm or retic. Black heads too, though I don't like them lol. That's my preference. Bredli's are also plenty big and are thicker and heavier then most carpets I find. At 8 feet they are impressive! Like scrub pythons only dense. Females usually get larger then males as you know, so go for a female if you want size. Sorry to hear about your Rainbow Boa, that really sucks... Good luck!

I second a Boa or Carpet. Easy to care for and not huge huge. Boas are great . They get impressive, look great and won't break the bank for food. Carpets are also just as cool in every way. The difference is Boas tend to be about 1/3 as active as Carpets. So if you want a snake to watch TV with get a Boa. A snake you have to chase and keep both eyes on get a Carpet. Or better yet do what I did .... Get both ;)

Big enough???

Plenty big! Great family shots! The amount of strength still at that size is very impressive, you probably don't the strength of a burm going against you while you're on your own. A boa or a Carpet may not seem big, but they are when you hold them. Best to stay in range of what you can handle. I wouldn't go as big as a burm or a retic as your second snake. Take a look above and that's what you want, trust me!

Yeah I would move up slow to the real big ones, I started out with ball python then moved to boas then retics and burm. There are a lot of snakes out there that get big but not too BIG.

if you want a boa, you should wait a little because there will be more to pick from in a few months (im hope to see RTB babies in June from my breeding :D ) but until then read read read about them and do your homework. What kind of boa are you looking at Red tails, rainbow boa?

And i hope you find a safe place to live, its really nice of your dad to take you in, might be a great thing until you get back on your feet.

I'm just poking fun, i hear the word "like" far too many times going to a college that used to be an all girls school, its about 72% female 28% male here, and a lot of my classes are w/ nursing majors (bio chem etc) and i just want to slap all of them whey then try to speak. its sad really.

I spoke to one of my professors and told her I would be tallying every "like" throughout a class period (discussion based day), we had 278 likes said in 1 hour and 15 minutes..

That comes out to one "like" improperly used every ~15 seconds. Yes. 15 seconds.

I showed it to her afterwards and she was baffled. I even caught her saying it three times.

I showed it to one of my other professors and he loved it so much that he instituted a new rule "If you say the word like improperly during a presentation you lose 1 point"

We had one girl go up (knowing you couldn't say like improperly) and give a 5 minute presentation, she got a 91 on the project and ended up with a 64% because of how many likes she said. I love that professor.

psssst... you did in the OP..

anyway, I'm getting a brazilian rainbow boa from David from rainbows-r-us, hes been a great guy to talk to through email, and really seems to take more a "pets first" approach to his breeding rather than just pumping out snakes to make money

he also breeds BCI's, i love how he posts the parents and you look at them by clutch

Check out Bob Clark. I don't think he has carpets but he should have some nice boas.

I'd say check out NERD (New England Reptile Distributors) but their animals are usually expensive. Not much normals or common ones from them.

Also, check out Ben Siegel's place. I got my Colombian Red Tail from him. He hasn't updated his availability page in a while, but you can always call and see what he may have that's not listed.

If I think of anything else later, I'll text you. I just got home from a 16 plus hour day and can't think too well right now lol

For carpets you have a lot of choices, but one name comes to my mind. John Battaglia, Morelia Trophy Club (http://www.moreliatrophyclub.com/) if you want a carpet that will grow big, fast, and prettier then all the rest, go here. I'd ask for a Sibling, female if he's willing, and pay the bucks. He selectively breeds for size as well as colour, so his tend to get larger, and grow faster. He's a great guy over all too, he'll be in it with you for the long run if you want.
For boas there's even more options I'd say, but I'd have to go with Jeff Ronne, the Boaphile! He knows his stuff, he's a great guy to deal with, and has amazing looking boa constrictors. Reach him at Boaphile Plastics Error404.html Page (http://www.boaphile.com) Of corurse we're all here to help as well, and a pound is also a great place to find larger snakes that need homes. Even young ones! I'll check around for you if you want. Drool over the webpages I provided, they both have caresheets as well I believe. Good luck!

I'm gonna veto that vote for Bob Clark, I can't really stand his business practices (and have heard horror stories about other things) and will go elsewhere if I possibly can.
Jimmy Stelpflug at SW Reptiles is who Bob gets a lot of his non-Retic and non-Burm snakes from originally anyways.

Hey buys and flips other people's snakes at "Bob Clark" prices. He's sold sick snakes or snakes with mites. He artificially inflates the prices of any new morphs he gets and then rips on people when they get a hold of said morph and undercuts his price at a fair market price. He's also really high on himself. Don't get me wrong he's got some amazing animals and there are instances where I would send someone to him, but if you can get it somewhere else, I would go there first. There's a reason a large number of his retic sales are overseas now.
That said he's definitely not the only breeder that does this. But he's one of the biggest names in the business.

Caylan
02-25-12, 02:14 AM
I still highly recommend my first two suggestions first and foremost... Blake Bauer also keeps carpet pythons, and Tom Keogan I think does too. I wish I was more into the boa crowd... VPI would be another good place to look, but really both species are everywhere, any size and age, and many different prices, ranging probably from $50-$100,000. I would like to point out adult caging needs to be factored in as well, needing a 4x2x1 at the LEAST(you said you wanted big, I would 6x2x2...) which can cost a pretty penny as well, not to mention new heating equipment etc... Rabbits or multiple large rats... lots of things to consider. Where are you going to live with an 8 foot snake?(anywhere you want I would think... but apparently not) Where as you can hide a ball python, or get away with it even... Oh I can't wait to move now................. Local classifieds will probably have lots as well, not everyone buys a snake as a long term pet unfortunately(some due to circumstances, but take with a grain of salt obviously) Good luck again!

I'm considering possibly buying a BCI from Rainbows-r-us. As for caging my dad works construction and has already agreed to help me make 2 tanks (one for my BP and another for whichever snake i decide to get i suppose)
Can someone send me to a good BCI care sheet? i do the searches myself usually but i always end up with different info from each site i look at.

I think its cute when girls say like a lot lol, not sure why...

Boa care is fairly easy, its a lot like keeping other boids I find. The universal 80* cool side 90* hot side can be used, humidity I like around 50%, usually brought up by using a large water bowl, feed a good size meal every once in a while and your good to go. Cage size 4x2x2 for an adult, shouldn't need anything bigger then 2 pound rabbits, which I would feed monthly as an adult. Other then that, they really don't have a lot of specific care guidelines, so it should be fairly easy for you! I keep the babies the same way I keep ball pythons honestly...

More then likely it was a mistake and he was going to put sold or something, but was reducing prices on other snakes and just forgot. Send in an email if you're concerned, he doesn't want his site to be inaccurate himself either. He's better off putting sold out!!
