Many people have been asking what type of snake it is and I woud just like to answer any future questions. It is a San Francisco Garter Snake and NO it is not photoshopped. These are there real colours. If you are wondering how much they are I have seen them go from 100$-300$. A good breeder for him and any other Garter Snake is Scott Felzer's Garter Snakes, specializing in aberrant garters (http://albinogartersnake.com/)

Those are awesome (i was one of the pm'ers!)

The only problem i see is that in researching, they seem to be one of the most endangered snakes in the US currently, so i'm not sure how readily available they are or if they're legal to sell in CA/out of CA.. (i cant find any on that linked breeders sight)

found this:

http://www.epa.gov/espp/factsheets/sf-garter-snake.pdf

also found a few forums with members saying they're illegal to own/sell out of the US, and I would assume extremely difficult to find outside of the US breeder wise. Looks like there were a few shipped out of the US and are bred from those, cant find where specifically, but its legal to own them in Canada and whatnot, but my hopes at one are null now haha

Will do but probably not going to happen my parents are kinda hard to convince. My mom thinks they are gross and shud not be pets plus my dad doesn't really like them.

Sorry, yea the breeder doesn't have any San Francisco's but he does have Neon Blue California Red-Sided Garter snakes witch look alot like them. Thats what I was thinking of on his site, sorry. And I was thinking of the Neon Blue California Red-Sided Garter Snake for the pricing to but the Neon Blue ones are also very pretty!

Those are even cooler!

i was sad for a minute thinking i was going to have to tell you that the snake you want is endangered and you probably wont find one..

Those blue sided's are on "the list" now i guess. oh dear.. more lists..

I have been keeping Infernalis' now for about the last six years.

If you can't guess, They are my favourite Thamnophis species.

BTW, they have attitude. Not a handling friendly snake at all.

GarterPython
02-19-12, 11:38 PM
Now everybody knows were wayne got the name Infernais. I should have just called them Infernalis Garter Snakes in my post were I was explaining that I got it mixed up. It would have been alot easier than putting Neon Blue California Red Sided Garter Snake two different times.

GarterPython
02-19-12, 11:41 PM
Infernalis thanks for that. I didn't know that they were mean in all the research ive done on them!

BTW Is it easy to get them to be okay to be handled or are they pretty hard to calm down enough to handle quite a bit.

I've seen a few wild garters snake before around my place they always try to bite me lol if I pick them up

GarterPython
02-19-12, 11:50 PM
Yea I find ribbon snakes around here sometimes and when you try and pick them up they will bite you but once they bite you and you hold them for a while. They seem to realize that you are not going to hurt them and they stop trying to bite you. Also at least there bites aren't too bad!

theapexgerman
02-19-12, 11:52 PM
just feels like a little pinch but there pretty aggresive for such a small snake

GarterPython
02-19-12, 11:53 PM
Yea they definitly are. There bite reminds me alot of a Moquito bite but with out the irritating itching after.

Yea ia few years ago my dog was snopeing around my barn and a ground snake bite him on the nose and hung on it was quite funny piss my dog off tho

GarterPython
02-20-12, 12:00 AM
Haha I could see that happening. Poor dog was probably freaking out though.

theapexgerman
02-20-12, 12:06 AM
Yea he was shacking his head the snake hag a good grip in his nose I got it off tho and put it back in the barn under some dead wood my dog to this day never goes around my barn

GarterPython
02-20-12, 12:07 AM
Now I feel bad for the dog! :( Dogs lways find a wy to get in to trouble espetially with wild snakes!

If you look close, they always have their cheeks flared out, and are always posed to strike.

Virtually every Infernalis I have worked with was high strung and mean.

theapexgerman
02-20-12, 01:16 AM
What do yopu feed them when there hatchlings there small

infernalis
02-20-12, 01:22 AM
Chopped up pinkie mush..yes, that blob is a pinkie mouse ground up into a paste.

The like tiny little fishies too.

theapexgerman
02-20-12, 01:26 AM
Lol that's pretty cool I didn't think they eat tiny fish to but does make sense

infernalis
02-20-12, 01:33 AM
They are semi aquatic, they generally live near creeks, wetlands and swamps, They are especially fond of tadpoles when first born.

In fact, when I "train them" to eat the pinkie mush, I chop up a little trout in it to give it that fish smell.

I found a garter snake once teaching my sister how to fish for baby trout in this small pond that I found. Snake just slides in like its the air and snatches one out no problem, made me look foolish lol. Here I am with cheese and a string lol. She enjoyed it though. Heck, so did I! Now I've seen a garter eating a frog, a mouse, and a fish. Oh and slugs but they're not exciting, I think they actually help the snake eat it... Tentacled water snakes are cool to watch fish, they scare them with one part of their body, predict the movement and the fish practically swims into their mouths. Super cool, I wish I could explore fish feeding even more. Something I'd be ok with feeding live, just to watch what the snake does... I really prefer the san fancisco variety to the infernalis myself, are they readily available as well? Having a hard time finding anything on them, and thats rare for me lol. Perhaps I should join the thamnophis forum now... I like too many things!!!:pissedoff: Caylan.S.

I really need to find a secluded spot around here where I can watch garters go fishing.

Caylan
02-20-12, 02:06 AM
I know a place!! But I'm BC... They eat everything over there.... You'll be walking then all of a suddn you hear the desperate cries of a helpless animal, and by the time you find it, a garter snake is half way up back... poor treefrogs... Next thing you know a fish is jumping on shore and... nope a snake has that one too... LOL! Nature at it's finest, just gotta find it. Good luck! Caylan.S.

As it has already been said, San Francisco garter snakes are the most endangered reptile on the planet, they are a federally protected species.

I don't know about availability in Canada, but anyone caught touching, killing or otherwise disturbing one in the US is committing a federal crime.

Not so long ago, a construction site in California got shut down, because a bulldozer ran over one.

I should have asked if you had any leftover from last season. What's a good size tank for a garter? We can take this to pm if necessary.

Why not start a garter Q&A in the Thamnophis forum, so everyone can get something from it.

Cause I am lazy today. It seriously takes a couple of days for me to start a thread. I will do it on lunch my break though.

Not sure how I missed all that... Wow what a shame... Thanks for the Info Wayne, I know how much it sucks to have to keep repeating everything lol. I'll still hold out hopes for one, probably still easier then an oenpelli python. Man I want a giant anteresia... Thanks again, Caylan.S.

I love those little guys, I won't give up on them any day soon.

Heck, I don't know too many other people who bulldozed their back yard just to make a wetland so the local garters would be happy and thrive.

02-21-12, 02:02 AM
Thats wicked! The creek near me is only a 5 minute walk away, though my spots are around 30 minutes in... I would love to make my backyard into a creek like you have though, a little reservation for wildlife to enjoy. I envy what you've done with your life Wayne, I really do. Caylan.S.

Now I have to fence that off, people have already been in there with ATVs

I just told some dude that I caught on my property as he pulled out in his muddy pickup truck that if I ever saw him back there again I would shoot holes through his front grill!

The part about my property I hate is that there is a path leading in from the neighbours place.

I will get a satellite image and be right back with it.
