I have been awfully busy lately. Trying my best to stay focused and positive although ive been battling a bit of post partum depression (the important thing is i recognized it) Filling pan after pan with tiny clay herps. It keeps my mind off some tough family issues. It is truly what I am living for! (besides our daughter of course) It's hard work! I thought I'd let you guys in on an exclusive peek at three of the newest pieces before they go into the oven! Remember -all- of this is clay. Colored clay. That is it! No paint involved. I hand mix the colors, I do every little detail all by hand! I make pieces of all ranges of detail and prices. The grayband is an average piece. The pied is decent and a high end piece. The BRB is so incredibly realistic, it is my new best work. It is what I would consider a true collector quality piece! I am very proud of it! In my opinion, it tops the rhinocerous viper. It is accurate even to saddle count. I mean business, and that piece shows it! I will be vending and unveiling this and many more pieces at next weekends hamburg show! If you guys would like more previews before the show, I may be obliged ;)

I have kept you in mind, that's for sure. Starting a new job, and when I get a chance I can't wait to order some things from you. What i love, besides how beautiful and skillful they are, is the *personality* that is there. I have seen some clay stuff before that was snakes, but you actually make me feel like i'm looking at little snakes! I love it. I really do!
Very impressive artwork ;-)

Feeling is something I take very seriously when it comes to my work, that was my whole goal so I am glad that people can see it! Sometimes what really brings a piece to life is his little "expression". That is very hard to pull off when you are working with points of clay that are so small that you made them by scraping the clay and isolating that tiny bit that fits under your fingernail! Its all in the head and paying attention to enough facial detail including the size, Patterns, head shape and most importantly the eye placement! I mimic the real thing as opposed to just putting on a generic snake head. If the eyes are not positioned just right it can make or break a piece. A piece goes from awe inspiring to goofy looking with the difference of about 1mm.
When I made the king cobra, I wanted people to sense its pride and feel empowered. When I make kingsnakes I want people to get that sense of their constant cute (sometimes bitey) playful curiousity. When I make copperheads I want people to sense his calm demeanor, his tiny scowl and his comfort in the reassurance that he is venomous and knows it. in order to pull this off I have to pay a lot of attention not just to the face and head details, but also what position a real snake of that species would naturally lay. You won't see a blood python in a big squiggly loop of curves and you wouldn't see a carpet python posturing like a blood in that classic sickle shape with the nose tilted up. A lot of what I do revolves around my intense passion for real snakes and knowledge of their behavior. I think that someone outside our hobby would have a hard time capturing that special "Essence" no matter how good they are because they look at a picture of a snake and they see, the snake and nothing else. When we see a picture of a snake we are able to think "boy, that snake looks pissed" or " oh look he is curious!" even though those two moods look identical to the untrained eye. (case in point, how many people have had an outsider see your snakes neck in a curved position and assume he's going to strike and then they don't understand how you are SO SURE he's not in strike mode?)

The BRB hasnt been priced yet as I don't price until I'm finished and can see the whole work (this one needs a clear coat and I'm wondering if I can pull off some irridescence) but for the quality and work I put into it alone $130-140ish. Prices are always based on detail and mostly the time spent on it. Something like the pied would be $60-$70 range and the GBK will probably go for $35-40. My most affordable pieces are the Cali kings which sell for $15-30 each. I sell a lot of them because they are affordable but also gorgeous, a black and white snake, And I often put them on dichroic glass, even people not into snakes will wear them!
Do you have a website where I could browse some more of your work ? i'm interested in buying ;-)

I'm not here to blatantly advertise... I'm here to share! That's why I didn't post the site until someone asked ;)
Instead of making future threads regarding my art though I am just going to keep updating this one. SO FOLKS if you like to see pictures of new stuff created they will go into this thread.
At this exact moment I am sculpting a jungle carpet. More on that in a bit ;)

Lol! No worries love, I'm not worried about that! Anyone can take up working with polymer clay as all the materials are available commonly. A lot of people sculpt things out of plain white clay, bake it and paint with acrylic. I absolutely hate painting, I'm good at it but I hate all the switching between colors and cleaning the brushes. So I decided I was going to do it without paint. It's a whole different kind of talent, and practice and experimenting are the only things you can do to hone skill.
The only thing you NEED is some polymer clay and an oven that is able to maintain a consistent temperature of 275F. The rest is all in where you take it. You can use nothing but your bare hands to make art or you could use some basic tools. I highly recommend a pasta machine (available at any craft store wit the clay stuff) as of your clay is not properly conditioned it will not be as workable and air bubbles and cracks can form and ruin your work! I also will recommend that you bake at the 275 degrees as suggested but do it for longer than they suggest. As long as you don't bake it hotter than275 it's not going to burn but a longer bake makes it stronger. I bake my pieces for a minimum of one hour! Test your oven with some scrap clay first to make sure it actually heats properly. If polymer clay is overheated it will readily burn, creating some toxic fumes but also scorches the surface and completely ruins it.

There is my work area on the average day... You know art is being created if there is crap EVERYWHERE! to the left is my tool bag and bins full of clays. There is a large rack of paints that I haven't used in forever but are there in case I need to make something and paint it some day.I used to sculpt and paint dragons. In the little compartment boxes are TONS of glass and stone pieces for applying my work, I select and purchase each one separately. The rock collector from my childhood is still there and loves this part!!! To the far right are the pasta machind and hardware supplies such as seed beads, suede cords, jewelry wire and all the metal pieces used to make jewelry. My most important tool is a 6 inch long flexible razor blade that I use for practically everything! In the cabinets are shipping supplies and display racks for when I do shows. This is just to give you an idea of just how far invested into this I am, keep in mind you do not need all of this to make a few for fun, and that I have literally hundreds, possibly close to a grand invested now in my work station. But I keep it nice and my tools will last forever!

You're work is truly amazing. After I get moved next month and settled (with a job) I'd like to get a couple of pieces from you. About how much to do order specifics? I'd love to get one of a rainbow and an albino burm, preferably as a necklace charm or even bracelets (and rarely EVER wear jewelry but I'd wear these all the time!).
Awesome, thanks so much for the info.
i think I am going to go out this weekend and pick ip some clay to start playing with :)

Go to michaels! A lot of times they have a sale on it, usually 4/$5. If they dot I would wait because it's almost always on sale and paying like $2.50 for each little brick is just absurd! Sometimes if you get lucky it's only 99cents each! and always go to their website becuase they always have a coupon for either 40% or 50% off one regular price item. If you have a smartphone just download their app. It's great for buying a High ticket item like a pasta machine or a large box of clay! I pretty much never pay full price for anything there.

That BRB is stunning. I would love to see the amount of work that goes into making that one. Making those patterns couldn't have been easy. I can't imagine how much the right touch would change the way things turn out.
edit: will you take requests?
Gorgeous work!! If you don't mind me asking, do you use armatures, or are they solid clay?

So unfortunately there is now no way to behold the true awesomeness of this piece unless you are holding it. It it shimmers like a real brb would! It looks more grainy than it actually is because of the tiny shimmering fragments refracting light at the camera! In person it looks -legit-! The irridescence is more noticeable in bright light just like the real snake and almost disappears totally in a dim room!

gah i just squeee looking at them!
But seriously, i have done enough work with various art materials to understand what you mean by the tiniest bit that fits under your fingernail, to the other details. That's one of the reasons i complimented you...i know it takes a lot of skill to do what you have done, and a lot of understanding of the snakes, their attitudes, postures, etc.! I think you have done an AMAZING job. The essence of the snake is really there. I LOVE it!
Love, love, love!!!
I can't wait to be able to order some from you. Come on new job!!! (Not starting until tuesday, and there's a few bills that come first, but this is ON my list. I've been biding my time. I haven't forgotten seeing some of your other posts!)

That BRB is perfect, I might have something I want you to try your hand at making if you're up for a challenge.
I'm also broke as of right now, so either you can try and sell it to someone else, make it simply for the enjoyment of taking on a challenge (I do that, I'm crazy like that), or make it and wait till I get paid, or not make it, or whatever.

So I made a ton of new stuff in preparation for the hamburg show and the response was fantastic! I'm very proud of how well this is taking off for me :) People really seemed to appreciate the fact that this stuff was made by hand and with nothing but CLAY! No paints, no molds, nothing but my fingers and some wood tools! Here I will show off some of my latest works After the jump, but also, here are some photos from the show, mostly of kids with their shiny new rainbow snakes! I make them in bulk and sell them for $5. Kids LOVE them and parents love me for making something cheap to satisfy their kid that wants a souvenir!

I have a request, but I'm nit sure how a large pendant would look on me. How fragile are these pieces? Might the hold up as maybe a wristband possibly? Just trying to think outside the box, because I really want one, well now two! The first is a given, but I'll give ya hint about the 2nd:

If you mean as a bangle, they hold up just fine! But I would need a measurement in MM as to what you would need the inside diameter of the bangle to be! Also, I am currently 5 special orders deep with 6 and 7 in talks!!! I have an official list of people who for sure want to order something with me and so if you'd like to be included please PM me. I take customers one at a time to prevent anyone getting impatient, no deposits accepted until I am ready to work on your individual piece!
