You will find there are individuals who love preying on those who are new to the reptile hobby. They find enjoyment in picking apart any weakness they find in someone's husbandry, their animal's appearance, etc. It truly makes me sick to see those people doing that. Aren't we supposed to educate those new to the hobby?
The people on here are so knowledgeable, friendly, and maybe even a bit wacky (LOL), but that is what makes it our second home. We want to educate newcomers such as yourself, in order to make you a better owner, and for you to have a healthy, happy Sav.
I truly hope you enjoy your stay here, and ask, ask, ask away, if you have any questions :)

It's not often people call me nice. It's usually me telling somebody what should be done, them not being willing and or able to afford it, and them calling me a b*tch when their animals die. :( Sad truth.
Most people just call me "Barely", or "BB". My name is Hedy (prounounced like the head on your shoulders with a y at the end).

None of my corns snakes have ever struck at me.
My carpet on the other hand... :p
Corns don't like to chill they like to climb all over you and never stop moving. I love my active snakes. When I just want to chill I take out my beardie.
If you want a lazy snake hands down get a ball python.
BarelyBreathing
02-16-12, 01:02 PM
Yeah, you need a ball python. Or a Kenyan sand boa! I vote for Kenyans. Maybe Chris will stop by and show off her fishy sock puppets!

I was doing that! I really want a snake now hah :) I want a bearded dragon then I'll look at getting a ball python! What are the yellow snakes called? I kno I'm a rookie but I've seen some green snakes that turn yellow when they mature
BarelyBreathing
02-16-12, 02:00 PM
I'm not sure about that, but there are yellow snakes that turn green when they mature. Those are called green tree pythons.
Bradyloach
02-16-12, 02:03 PM
They look pretty cool!
jaleely
02-16-12, 08:53 PM
so what is it about snakes that gave you a fear? A movie, or what? Is it just that they wriggle around?
We have to work on this!
And yes, corn snakes are small and cute, but they are kinda always moving. Ball pythons are an excellent starter snake, because you can see when they are more afraid of you, than you are of them...the ball up! Properly called "royal" pythons, even when grown they don't seem too big. They are more round/fat in the middle, making them seem a little jolly, i think. They'd almost always rather hide their heads, than bite or something.
I think another amazingly cute docile snake is the hognose! They can be picky eaters. They don't get very big though.
And, of course, someone mentioned sand boas. They are just SO goofy looking they wouldn't seem dangerous to anyone i think! A pointed tail, and head, make them seem "two headed" as they are known for in india (the lucky two headed snake). IT's actually illegal for them to have them over there, and they mistreat, import, and house them poorly because they are just used for good luck charms. They are docile, and have easy care.
Also, their eyes are kind of on the top of their heads and it looks like they're looking in different directions sometimes...a total sock-puppet cutie!
I def would see if there's someone around that you could hold their snakes. If you like lizards, in my opinion, snakes are not much different. It's still a reptile thing that crawls around and looks cute when eating!

02-16-12, 09:04 PM
My next reptile might be a ball python rather than a bearded dragon :) now to do research! Herps are addicting

I don't want to incorrectly promote anything.. but when the time is right, when Cass is truly comfortable, you will (possibly) find Cass more than happy to spend time interacting with you.
This is not always the case, but one of the things that make Savs so attractive in the pet trade is they tend to tolerate humans much better than some of the other Monitor species.
However, you must always be cautious, always pay attention to everything going on around you.
Here is an example: Chomper grew up to be very friendly, he really liked human interaction, Dorothy and I could hold him, he would sit on laps, ride around on shoulders, etc...
Now one day I had him out, and I had him against my chest out back in the meadow.. Then someone started a dirt bike up and it was loud. Chomper got spooked by the sound and gashed me up good with his toenails, he crapped down the front of me and jumped to the ground, took off running at full speed.
when I finally did catch up to him, he turned around, opened his mouth and hissed right at me, he had the look of the devil in his eyes.
Getting him back into the house, and into his enclosure was a challenge I will never forget. I was cut open, covered in Monitor feces and I had to wrap him in my shirt just to get him immobilized to bring him in.
The point is, like I already said, be aware of everything going on around you. one car backfiring, one dog barking, one screaming kid can be all it takes to spook a monitor, and when they are spooked, they are not the same animal anymore, they shift into "survival mode" and it can be dangerous. Never forget that.

I know you are taking your time, I know you will be an example for others to follow, heck you already are. :)
I just wanted to make sure that one day, you don't get over confident and wind up hurt.
Savs can be rewarding pets with proper care. It is a shame how they sell them in pet stores... You've come to the right place.

I just feed my monitor then leave him alone for the whole day! Tuesday's and Friday's I dust them with calcium! And when I feed him I lure him on my hand, once a feeding. I let him do his own thing. That's his bedroom, and when he wants me to come in he will tell me :)
