Wayne, do you have a friend in Africa that is taking these vids for you?

infernalis

She's not taking them "for me" she's a fellow animal lover just like us.

Told me yesterday she has a wild Nile that gets on the roof of her house sometimes, Still waiting for some footage of that.

Okay. I have a friend who visits SA a lot. She takes pics of the reptiles for me....she loves animals but has little interest in monitors and snakes.

Awesome. That would be so amazing to live in a place where a wild monitor lives on your house of its own volition! Totally envious of people like your friend and Crocdoc who get to go see these guys in the wild when they have some free time.

I envy her for that too, but the poaching and farmer genocide I can live without.

Exactly!! My friend works with rhinos (mostly) and the poaching is disgusting.

Thought I'd give you some details about the monitors in the videos. The house where they live in the roof is located next to the South point of Kruger National Park, approximately 500 meters from the Crocodile River. We've had the house now for almost 5 years and amazingly both were there from the beginning till now. The nile monitor lives on the left side of the house and the rock monitor on the right, it is a flat tin roof.

The rock monitor always sticks her head out when we cook bacon and eggs on the veranda, she cant resist the smell. Last year when we arrived home she came bursting past us and out of the house, both me and my husband were so shocked we had to sit down for a moment. It turned out that she fell through our bathroom ceiling. Thankfully she wasn't hurt and moved right back in after repairs were done to the roof.

We are going camping inside Kruger Park and will be staying next to the Letaba River. Unfortunately it is only for 4 days so hold thumbs for good sightings. We will only sleep over one night at our house so if we do see the monitors in the roof we will be VERY lucky.

Nice videos, especially the white-throat. There's a great Attenborough documentary about Nile monitors called "Africa's Greatest Thief", I don't know if it's available on DVD. As I remember the blurb included the line "with its criminal lifestyle comes extreme danger".

I saw that program, a definite watch if you havent seen it before. They are indeed very-very 'naughty. I actually feel sorry for our crocs sometimes especially because the mothers are so devoted to their young.

Great videos. What are the birds making the repetitive sounds in the last video? Do they always make that sound, or were they responding to the presence of the monitor lizard?

wildheart

Those were Yellow-billed Hornbills, very common in the Mpumalanga region. They are always singing like that so no it was not the monitor that caused it. ;)

I love yellow-billed hornbills. I did an illustration of one for a book, many years ago.

I'm familiar with the local birds and the sounds they make here in Australia, so when I hear one making an unusual, repeating call it is usually a distress or warning call and worth checking out. More often than not heading to the source of the sound will reveal a monitor lizard on the ground below the birds (or climbing the tree). That's why I'd asked about the sounds in the video.

I'm not at all familiar with the sounds of African birds although, judging by the background sounds in your videos, they're every bit as weird as the ones in Australia - a far cry (pun intended) from the 'tweets' I grew up with in Canada!

Yes, Jarich (and thanks!). It's an acrylic painting on illustration board. In one of my previous careers/lives I was a wildlife illustrator for a good number of years.

I even have to mime in the shower so I don't frighten the neighbours.

crocdoc

Oh, I sing, but never where someone might hear me. That restricts me to singing in my car while driving on my own down the freeway (but even then with the windows rolled up, just in case). :)

Your drawing is spot on, beautiful.

We recorded them in the tree right after the monitor disappeared. They are very vocal.

Will have to wait for Wayne to fix the video link again.:p

Every once in a while I come up with something witty. It comes few and far between, though, so enjoy it while it lasts.
