I just recieved a male and female "breeding" pair.

They were free with tank, they were living in months worth of dead crickets and waste to make it worse it was a 5g he told me they are more secure in small spaces.

The females tail is limp/floppy, I'm guessing calcium problem or early stages of mbd, I'll upload a picture later. I have seperated them and they are both in seperate 20g for now.

Any tips on keeping these would be appreciated.

Aww They are adorable. I am so happy that they will have better living conditions now! I have never owned cresties before so I have no real advice to offer besides that I would get them on CGD- Crested Gecko Diet asap. If I am not mistaken that is balanced the best for them and might help get them back to health faster than feeding crickets and what not.

I love them!

By the way, floppy tail is relatively common in crested geckos. When they hang upside down, their tail flops over and pulls their hips up at a weird angle. Most breeders actually purposefully remove their tails to prevent this, because it actually causes permanent damage to the hips.

By the way, the male is an absolute darling.

so cute, but looking at the males head they have not been feeding them as much has they should, the top of his head should be filled in more. get some mealworms and that power they eat and they should be too to go.

This may sound cruel, but go ahead and rip off her tail. It will be better for her in the long run.

Ok I'll upload a picture first to see if that's what should be done. For the healing proces should I keep her on paper towel and aply any cream?

Paper towels are a yes. I've never heard of people applying any cream to the tails. Most breeders encourage their specimens to drop their tails, because it's healthier for them. There isn't a risk of floppy tail syndrome, and it's actually easier for the animals to breed without tails.

Here's an interesting fact: It was unknown to science that crested geckos were even born with tails until they were introduced to the pet trade, and the first captive bred specimens were hatched.

AWWWWW I love crested geckos! That's what Gary is.

Yes, oh my they sure can jump. first day I brought Gary home he was supposed to crawl out of his travel container and into the nice tank I had set up for him. Instead he ran out of the container, turned around, ran up my arm and jumped onto my mom's face because she was standing behind me. he made quite the first impression

Gary likes mushed up mango, he licks it right off my fingertips

Wow, I've never seen a tail in such bad condition. You may want to think of giving her some liquid calcium. A few drops a day. Poor girl. I'm sure she'll feel better soon now that she's in your care.

Sweet looking cresties.

Ok I will, Thanks. Do you think I should rip it off still?

Most breeders agree that even healthy crested geckos do much better in the long run without their tails.

Ouch, that tail definitely looks abnormal. :sorry:

Is floppy tail syndrome a genetic thing?

BarelyBreathing
02-06-12, 06:35 PM
No, it isn't. It's caused by crested geckos hanging upside down, where the tail hangs down or over them. This causes the tail to pull the hips upwards at an angle. If the gecko does this continuously, the hips will slowly deform.

No Idea on how to keep them but they look very nice.

Her hips are already deformed looking.
May be a stupid question but how do I rip it off?

BarelyBreathing

That's really, really sad. Just grab the tail and pull. You'll be surprised how little pressure is needed.

I feel bad for the thing :(

I wish you were closer and you could come rip it off. I know it will be better for her in the long run, I don't think it's cruel, it's just like docking a dogs tail or clipping their ears.
I just can't seem to do it.

awww Jay... I can see how that would be tough but think of it like your taking a painful sliver out. Just do it and you will feel better after.

I'll be pulling her tail off later tonight after I set up her own 10g I will not be breeding her any time soon. Until then I just picked up this female for $30. I will breed her after a month or so of quarantine and research.

Wow, I love the orange!

You can also try suddenly turning on really loud music right next to her. True story: My friend has four crested geckos all in the living room. They had just set up surround sound and turned it on (a bit too loud) and all but one dropped their tails.

Suck it up butter cup!!!! :)
Just kidding of course. I think I would have a hard time too.
Its a pain to post a vid with my phone here but look up Crested Gecko tail loss on youtube. That might help a bit.
Best of luck. I live 2 blocks from a crested breeder so if you need " professional help" I'd be happy to give you contact info. Just pm me if you need it.
Picture or a DIY thread would be great to help future tail pullers.

That was by far the weirdest thing I have done. It came off quite fast, it apeared to be painless. Only a few dops of blood. I think the tail moved faster when it came off she kind off just sat there.
How long before I can put her on dirt again?
Thanks for all the help guys.
