View Full Version : Reptile Myths

Been hearing a few myths about reptiles that I'd like to get confirmed as fact or fiction...
True or false: A burmese python can lay up to 100 eggs
True or false: If crocodile eggs are too warm or too cold, they offspring will all be female
Anyone know the real answers?
Feel free to add to the list of myths yourselves.

i have heard burms can lay up to 100 eggs on tv, i am yet to ever hear of said person who has proof. most i know to be true is around 50. and the croc thing is true, or at least i believe it, i know geckos do.

The crocodile rumor is true. I also believe Freebody is correct about Burmese pythons.

Not true about Burmese's, but i know Green Anacondas can have up words to 100 babies.
On the Croc it's true.

The more a snake breeds, the more prolific a breeder it can become, and since Burmese are one of the giants, the eggs can come in great numbers, but I'd think 100 is a little on the high side.
As for the croc temperature thing, I believe that is true.
True or false: An adult blood python is so strong, it can break your leg with one strike.

Wow, that's way out there, lol. They do indeed have the hardest hit I've ever seen on a snake, but the idea that a snake can break bones with a strike is simply ridiculous, so I'd chalk that one-up to pure myth ;)

It doesn't take a lot of pressure properly applied to break a bone so sure, I'd go with true on that.
The most common snake myth I've ever heard is that they're slimy. I have no idea where that comes from.

I would have thought the snakes skull would be weaker than the bone in your leg so the skull would disintegrate rather than the legbone tho :)

Depends on witch bone in the leg as well
the Femur is the strongest bone in the human body, but if memory serves, the fubla (the smaller of the two bones in your calf) is considerably weaker
honestly I would buy fracturing it, maybe not a full break tho

That's why I stipulated 'properly applied'. I think it would likely be a freak accident if it were to happen.

Every person who *thinks* they know anything about snakes and won't listen to someone who does, tells me this. And of course, they all have an a huge fear of them and will believe anything that's told to them, except the right information  Some people I pretty much give up on since they're so closed minded. I do, however, enjoy showing off my cell pics of my babies. Especially my garbage disposal that's a burm. Each time she eats I swear you can literally see her grow. It's fascinating to me, makes me proud in a way, and I enjoy creeping out the idiots with the pics. Bad of me, I know, but, when I do this, they ask questions so they still show some interest. Hopefully one day what I tell them will sink in.

It's the same here, you tell someone you have a snake and the usual reaction is " urgh horrible slimy things".
My baby's only 4 months and eating 2 fluffs every feed, and yeah she's getting bigger by the day lol

Are you feeding her mice? If so, wait until you get her to switch to rats. My older bp grew pretty quick (for a bp) when I switched him over. Of course, it could have been a growth spurt too lol

Then she's growing well then. :) I'm patiently trying to switch my kids' younger bp's over to rats. I've been trying for about 6 weeks and so far, they haven't showed much of an interest, but I believe in time they'll eventually make the switch.
I weighed her last night she's 175 grms Are you sticking with trying to feed rats, or giving in and giving mice ?
Rogue628
02-03-12, 06:49 PM
I give in which is making the process much slower, I know. But I don't like it when I know my animals will eat....they just don't want what's offered lol. Plus I don't want to stress them out any so I never push feeding issues.
I'll also go by the pet store and pick up live (I have one that will only eat live so I have to go anyway) if they won't take a f/t.
I'm trying an alternate food source for those that aren't making the switch. My burm absolutely refuses to eat rats, even live, and has gone without for weeks when I refused to offer her anything else besides a rat. She will, however, take a chick. She'll go after them quicker than mice (my fault she's on mice but I've been trying to correct that since the first mouse feeding). I'm waiting on a friend's breeder rabbits (he sells bunnies for Easter) to have babies so I can try to switch my bigger animals to rabbits. He said he'd sell me feeders for cheap if my animals will take them (and he's scared of snakes, but is willing to help me...gotta love him!). But I won't let them go without if they refuse.
Sometimes switching this way can be really frustrating, but in the end, it's very rewarding and doesn't have my animals going without food. I'd much rather give them what they'll eat than to have them do without. This way, however, if they don't eat for a couple of feedings, I know there may be a problem. Even my oldest ball python will eat live when he has refused f/t. I rarely have an animal go off feed for more than two or three weeks, shed cycle exempt.
I just wish they all ate like my boyfriend's burm. She'll eat anything, anytime, anywhere. I have to feed her last so I don't overfeed her since she will eat what the others may refuse. This way I have none to throw away.
Bah...excuse the long post!
Hey don't apologise lol When I looked into getting Princess (What else you gonna call a baby female royal ? lol) i was told they can be picky eaters and it was a worry, but the pros outweighed the cons, and I fell in love with her anyway lol
So far (touchwood) she's never refused a meal. Long may it continue :-)

That Anaconda are venomous. I was talking to a friend about my yellow Andie at work and some lady goes "they're poisonous". "If you get bit, you'll die, and then it will eat me." I don't think even a large burm could fracture ( a fracture is the same thing as a break by the way...) a tibia or fibula with it's head. Granted my burm isn't fully grown but it has slammed into glass with alot of force and never cracked it.

the femur is the largerst and strongest bone in the human body
i know all about femurs as.....
my right femur broke in 8 places, popped out through my skin and snapped 2 inches off itself,on the door of my car
biggest problem when breaking a femur is.....
the bone marrow releases fatty embulisisms, that cause blood clots, that can kill you very quickly...!!
tibula and fibula are the 2 lower leg bones and are considerably weaker (can't remember which one is your shin bone)

the glass if you're talking aquarium is tempered glass meaning if cracked or slammed too hard it's only going to shatter but stay in tact...my fav is the don't let your snake lay beside you one...lmao I had my 15-17ft that slept in bed with me, under me coiled up and I could turn over on her and everything she truly was a big gentle giant...she basically lived outside her enclosure and shared my bedroom with me...except for eating and defecating she had my entire closet that was converted into an enclosure...a walk in enclosure...

imo a blood hits a lot harder than a burm
much more physical power in a much shorter snake, someone who understands the physics of it all, could better explain what i'm thinking though mate
as for a snake breaking the glass in its tank doors,i've got carpets i keep from striking anywhere near the glass,as imo they have the ability to break it (just my opinion though )

I have no idea what glass the guy that built it used. And i'm familiar with tempered glass breaking...
More velocity in a blood i'm guessing? Kinetic energy = mass x velocity squared divided by 2... Velocity is much more devastating than mass....Never seen a blood strike so I can't say, but if it's that strong I know what snake i'm not getting....

velocity and the equivilent of a huge bullet, travelling at said velocity
like a 50 cal as oppossed to a smaller round
a larger oject travelling at the same velocity of a smaller object will do a LOT more damage.....does that make sense randy ?
re bloods
for being large clumsy fat looking things, they can hit and at an awesome speed and power

I think I see what you're saying, but they'd have to be the same velocity for mass to make a difference. Velocity (speed) makes waaay more of a difference than mass ( size) . Doubling the mass of an object doubles the kinetic energy, while doubling the velocity QUADRUPLES the kinetic energy. So the blood would have to strike faster than a burm, which makes sense, larger burms strike more sluggish than smaller snakes i've seen.
Take a .223 and .22 round. The .223 is only .003 (three one thousands of an inch) bigger. Which really wouldn't make but the tiniest difference. It's the .223 have having 2900 FPS compared to 1200 FPS of the .22 that makes it blow a huge exit wound hole out of someone compared to a small sized hole from a .22.

What was it that was said to know the difference? Poison is ingested and venom is injected?
Poisons are toxic substances that are either ingested (as in eaten or drunk) or absorbed (as in through the skin or other tissue).
Venoms are toxic substances that are injected via a tooth/fang, claw, spine, or stinger.
tibula and fibula are the 2 lower leg bones and are considerably weaker (can't remember which one is your shin bone)
Tibia is the larger bone of the lower leg (your shin bone) whereas the fibula is the thinner bone.
How did you manage to do that much damage to your femur, mate? Sounds like you got hit by a car? Out of curiosity, were they able to reinsert the 2in piece that snapped off or did it wind up getting crushed or somehow too contaminated? (The science geek in me has to ask.)

ok let me rephrase that Shaun...lol...it isn't supposed to shard and pile up...so they say...i've had a few crack but never bust out
I think you might be talking about laminated glass, Burmeseguy. Tempered glass by its very production causes it to fragment when it breaks. It's stronger than normal glass because it's super heated and then quickly cooled, but that process also makes it shatter into tiny, non-sharp pieces.

i hit a car head on,we tumbled/rolled 6 times front to back of car (nose top tail)
my right leg went under the drivers seat.....
it kept going all the way up the back of the seat until reached the head rest.....i was in the front of the car,my leg was in the rear;)
causing 8 breaks to my right femur, the final one being a compound fracture hitting the door panel, snapping of a 2 inch ring off femur
my leg kept going and since there was no more femur left to break.....
my pelvis snapped in half vertically right up the middle,by sheer luck it broke but landed back exactly where it should be.so they put me in an induced coma for 8 days to allow the pelvis to start knitting together
i woke up with an external fixator holding what was left of the femur in place, with its jagged 2 inch gap
i was on my back for over 8 months allowing the bones to heal and grow.meantime they cut an inch wide 6 inch long strip of bone off my right hip/top of pelvis and grafted the bone into my leg.
they told me they reduce the bone cut off to a candy floss like texture, then pack it into the spaces on my damaged femur
to this day my legs an inch shorter than the other, and i have a metal plate covering the whole outside length of my femur.its attatched with 8 bolts and a heavy thread that goes into the ball of the femur that goes into the hip joint of the pelvis
if the bolts wear away the bone they are fed through then thats it,my leg comes off.
the bad thing is the compound break was so high up the femur, that it won't leave much of a stump for a prostetic limb.so it will most likely be them under arm crutches i'd have to get about on.
my left foot went the opposite way....
it was trapped and turned backwards,a full 180 degrees under the clutch pedal, which had my engine on top of it by this time
but because my pelvis had snapped in half the pain crossed over, and my brain thought it was,my left femur broken and my right foot being crushed.....
in fact it was the total opposite,as it WAS my right femur smashed and my left foot crushed;)
i fractured my skull 6 inches, tore an eyelid off at the top part, teeth through lips, but these were easy fixes it was the femur that gave and gives me grief to this day
its also crap at airports as i set off all the metal detectors.....which wins me a prize of.....a lovely strip search everytime i leave or enter the country:laugh::pissedoff:

and the above is a lesson on how NOT to drive your car;):D

the safety glass here isnt pressed with any type of plastic through it,which would allow it to break but stay together (its not laminated)
ours just shatters into lots of little pieces, they're not slithers of sharp glass, more like little round not so sharp pieces (hope that makes sense mate)
you must have the expensive laminated glass mate ? (i don't think a snake would get through that)

Oy! When you decide to mess yourself up, you do a bang up job of it! I had wondered if the broken off piece was usable how they could have possibly "sterilized" it. Makes sense that they could not do so. Still quite amazing what they were able to do. i had never broke a bone in my life before that night lol
the first surgeon that i got on the night of the smash put in a thing called a talyor nail.a metal pin right down through the middle of the femur (through the bone marrow)
it ripped itself out through the bone as he was finishing up,he then decided the only thing was to amputate,so got a 2nd opinion.....
enter 2nd surgeon 5am that morning
he spent 11 hours doing everything he could to stabilise and save the leg
after a year and a half of operations, manipulations and bone grafts i had something that resembled a leg
one last op to break the leg an manipulate it 65 degrees.....
and i have a short leg, with a foot that almost faces the front:D
they reckoned my leg would be off by 2005,but its still hangning in there :D

Shawn that's brutal man. How long ago did all that happen? I can't imagine the recovery you must have had to go through.
it happened 26th september 1994,my wifes little sisters birthday
it wasn't too bad as they reckoned it would take 3 years to learn to walk,i managed it in 18 months to 2 years
the first year the feeling of helplessness was the worst part of it,it was like being a small child unable to do anything for themselves and the inability to defend myself was quite scary
simply pushing me over may have cost me my right leg
it also took me a long time to feel safe overtaking in a car again
also i was a little claustraphobic, after they took an hour and a half to cut me out the wreckage.it was like i was wearing my car as a jacket
to this day i wind folk up telling them my scars are caused by a shark bite....not bad considering i cant swim and am scared of water :D;)
cheers shaun

Depends on witch bone in the leg as well
the Femur is the strongest bone in the human body, but if memory serves, the fubla (the smaller of the two bones in your calf) is considerably weaker
honestly I would buy fracturing it, maybe not a full break tho
almost true... the femur is not the strongest bone in the human body. However it is the biggest. the strongest bone is the Heel. also one of the most painful to break. (it sux)

possibly because the heel is technically 4 (may have that number wrong) bones , that are seperate as a young child, and fuse together as we age??? anyway who am i to argue with the ortho director lol

Ouch, Shaun. I shattered my right shin as a kid, and I thought that hurt. I could never imagine going through that. I'm glad you made it out.
So next time you hit the airport, wear something ... "provocative" underneath. May as well do your best to make the airport personal as uncomfortable as possible (not to mention entertain your wife later). http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-laughing025.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)
Pink leopard print thongs!!!
when my kids were young, they loved it when i stuck magnets to my leg:D
oh and my metal plate was made by ferrari, its got the little horse symbol, and made in italy stamped on it,so i can claim to " litterally " run a ferrari:laugh:
That's pretty funny.
i have also told them if/when they amputate,i'd like my leg to come home with me,minus the flesh if possible:laugh:
cheers shaun
That would be pretty epic. Dermisted beetles would come in handy for the job of defleshing your leg.
Oh i know the difference that why i said venomous, because that what it would be if they bit you. I put poisonous because that was what she said.
I blame it all on Animal Planet. They had a show where they were talking about Anacondas and how "the native use to believe anacondas were poisonous." A animal show and they can get it right WTF.
I wasn't saying you said that, I was just saying that it reminded me of it. :)

I thought that was in reference to thong sandals, not thong underwear???
Oh no BB leather things. They're really comfortable under a kilt
Well now theres a mental image I could've done without! ;)
As to which bone is the strongest, it depends on what criteria. The femur is the largest bone, so it could be considered the strongest. The Talus, or ankle bone you spoke of, is basically a big thick chunk of bone that holds up to extreme pressure. Generally though, material strength is often a measure of Young's Modulus, in which case the fibula is much stronger. Although your teeth take the prize, being covered in enamel

This isn't myth as much as it is confustion, but Chuck reminded me of this: Venomous vs. poisonous. Snakes are not poisonous. In fact, in some countries they are considered food, even the venomous snakes.
There is an exception... (Rhabdophis) keel back snakes actually secrete a poison from a glands on the back. They steal this poison from the poisonous toads/frogs they consume.

But they aren't on their own poisonous.
