Hey folks I am in the market for a nice little male Rottweiler puppy. Preferably not more then a couple months old. I am in Yuma, AZ. I have found a few breeders but to get a registered pup is just a bit more then I want to spend. If anyone knows where I can get a full blood with papers for under a grand I would be very interested.

do the papers really matter to you?? There are thousand of dogs in the shelters in your area, and I bet they have a rotti or two in the mix. puppy's and adults!!

Also, I think you're in the wrong forum... this forum is about reptiles, not puppies :hmm:
Check your local shelter.

I think the next dog we get will be a rescue mix but it would have to get along with my Yorkie he's almost 9 and doesnt like to share his mommy

maybe, but if we can get him to rescue instead of buy, it was all worth it in my books!!

Don't worry about that, once you convince them they are of the same pack, everything works out. My husky doesn't like to share me, but when we brought our Rattie home, it only took a week for them to become fast friends!!

Honestly, I'd have to agree. There are so many unwanted dogs out there that need a home. For that matter, check CraigsList -- there are often dogs on there as well, though obviously no guarantee of a rotti.

All my dogs have been rescue animals, and they have been the sweetest dogs I have ever owned. . If I do bend up getting another dog, I will be going back to my local shelters:)

I always suggest the rescue route. I don't know what it's like in AZ. But I pull dogs out of southern Cali shelters and bring them home to BC to find new homes. I do this because in the cali shelters a dog has a max of 5 days from entering the shelter system to be adopted, then they are euthanized if no-one has spoken for them.

I think when we move I will look into it, we need a medium to large sized breed preferably a working or sporting class hubby likes to hike
Two of my three dogs, both my cats and two of my snakes are adopted/rescued. I'm definitely pro-rescue.
But I see no reason why someone shouldn't buy a pure-bred dog if that's what they want. My pure-bred golden retriever is my best friend and I wouldn't be without him for anything.

poitash is a husky/retriever cross. My brother used to take him up the mountain when he was a younger pup, and said he kept up with the group wonderfully. And it's a wonderful cross with an AWESOME personality!!

we're not saying don't get a pure bred!! Do you have any idea how many pure bred dogs are in shelters??? You would be AMAZED!! You can get ANY dog you want from a shelter, as long as you are willing to take the time to look.
The dogs at the breeders won't be killed if they are not adopted by a certain time, whereas the shelter dogs will be killed, pure bred or not!! So I always start at the shelters.
There is also a website called dogs in danger, which gives pics and descriptions of dogs in American shelters who already have a euthanization date applied to them. You can find ANY BREED on there!! and if your willing to pay breeder prices, there's the travel funds to get your new babe home from whatever shelter you find him/her in.
There is also a forum called "DOGSTER" which has a railroad, where volunteers relay the dog you've rescued to you!!

we tried to get a rescue for our last dog but were told we "didnt score enough points in their assessment".
We have two adults home all day every day, an enclosed garden, i used to volunteer for the rescue and walk their dogs on the weekends, we both have had dogs in our families all our lives and never had any issues with regard to them getting loose or being reported for bad behaviour etc.
Some rescue centres are a total waste of space!
Snakefood
01-31-12, 11:49 AM
yes, I agree. Many private rescues are run by hoarders (you know, no one can care for this dog like I can, even though I have 20 others!!) But there are alot of us who do private rescue who AREN'T like that!! You just go to another rescue if the first is acting all "holier than thou"

If you have knowledge of dogs and dog training, they make superb family pets. But you have to make sure they know you're the boss. And that's al down to proper training.

yea I have the 'boss' thing nailed when we moved my dog in with us he had a dominance issue where he was the boss and if you faced him when he was in trouble he wouldn't hesitate to show you teeth and snap. Now if he's in trouble and I walk up to him he lays down and rolls over on his side/back

That's the way it's got to be with a dog that,s so large and powerful. They're not for first time owners.

Go to a shelter. Cheap put bred dogs are usually bred by back yard breeders and have tons of health and behavioral problems. That isn't something you want in a dog as big as a rottweiler.
lady_bug87
01-31-12, 02:37 PM
I think hubby and I will go for a young mix
Snakefood
01-31-12, 04:58 PM
mixes aren't neccesarily hardier than pure breds. For example rotti have problems with thier hips, so do german shepherds, so you mix those 2 breeds and the pups have double the chance of having that problem.
Poitash was double whammied by his 2 breeds for skin allergies, and I'll tell you, he is allergic to EVERYTHING!! there are 2 foods on the Canadian market he can eat and he has to get shots during certain season's. He is coming on 13, so I got him back in the day where it was beleived that hybrids are heartier/healthier than pure breds becasue the bloodlines are diluted.
So my advice when you find your dog is to look into common problems for all/both the breeds in the mix and make sure your not getting double whammied by the same health concern.

The papers only matter to me because I want a full blood puppy. I don't want other bloodlines taking away from the good qualities of the Rott. If I had a trustworthy person then papers wouldn't be necessary. But if I knew a trust worthy person with the puppies I wouldn't have needed to post this.
My golden ate his papers. We never got them filed, the cat knocked them off the desk and he took it from there.

Also for those of you who think I shouldn't be asking about puppies on here... I was just under the impression that this was a site focused on helping and educating its members. Also I didn't think it was too much to ask if someone just happened to know some useful information for me. Thank you to everyone that posted something useful.
LOL, yea there's a ton of OT stuff in here. It's called General Discussion after all.
I'm not sure if this place has changed lately or if I'm just hyper-sensitive to it for some reason.

Brently, remember that papers doesn't necessarily mean health. Getting puppies registered with AKC or CKC for a breeder is fairly easy. I'd go with a Rottweiler rescue organization. I posted two Rottweiler rescue organizations in Arizona a few pages back. :)
Also, I never said it was wrong or that you should'nt post about looking for a puppy... just that it was weird to see it on a reptile forum. ;)

Nope it really hasn't changed. We all need to find our place on here. Sometimes we have to get our rough edges knocked off and sometimes we need to just accept they are there. Personally I don't think we always use tact on here but show me someone who always uses tact in rl. We can all get along fine somedays and other days we might just he a little cranky. We call ourselves a large slightly dysfunctional family. Well we sure act like one. We just news to tough it out when times get thin. Honestly I find a pm is a good life line.;)

OK, so you want pure blood lines but you have to be very careful, because, you don't want to pay the $1000 or more but want papers, then your looking at backyard breeders, which DO NOT test thier breeders or have them certified.
ie: An actual Rotti breeder would have had both mamma and pappa's hips "certified" (they should SHOW you the certifacation) this certifacation shows that neither mother or father (and sometimes grandparents) of the pups never had hip problems. however, none of this is cheap and you will be paying around $1000 for that pup. But it IS worth it because to get a pure rotti from untested lines will be far more expensive in the future (hip surgery is about $1600/hip)
a backyard breeder will not have checked thier lines, or had the parents certified. They may only charge $800 for the pup, but to them it's pure profit because they didn't check the parents out.
As someone who has worked with dogs for the past 20 yrs, I have to say if you want the pure blood, pay the $$ for the pup who's parents have been tested, it will save your heart and wallet tons in the future. Also please be aware that pure bred rotti's commonly get bone cancer and have to be euthanized once it becomes too painful.
Its funny if you are looking for a reptile. Its preached [very loud sometimes] that captive bred is the only way to go if you want to know where they came from, quality, healthy, and well cared for critters.[I agree].Enter the dog world and its take on the mix breeds and unkown origins.I own three papered rotties.Raised them from pups.I like the fact if I have problems I can go to the breeder and find out the history of the line.I feel for the dogs in shelters.I do the same as feel for the reptile rescues.I just think there should not be a double standard because of fur.:)

You say you want papers, but you don't want to pay for quality. What you WILL getting is a dog from unproven parents. This means the parents haven't received either working or conformation titles, and the littler hasn't been tested for genetic abnormalities.
Why are these titles important?
Conformation titles means that the dog is built properly. It means that the animal is not deformed, and shows no signs of genetic problems such as hip and/or elbow displasia, over or under bite, bowed legs, etc.
Working titles say say two things: 1. The dog is physically healthy enough to perform the task it was bred for, and 2. the dog is mentally healthy enough to perform the task it was bred for.
Buying a pure bred puppy for cheap, you WILL be buying from back yard breeders. All those papers mean is that the dog is purebred. It doesn't mean it's not inbred. It doesn't mean the parents don't have health problems. It doesn't mean there is no aggression in the bloodlines (contrary to popular belief, a Rotweiler should NOT be aggressive). It doesn't mean that the puppies have any sort of health guarantee. Etc. These animals are often poorly bred and have health and mental issues.

All three of my cats are rescues but my dog is from a breeder she's a pure golden retriever like Norm has. I am looking for a puppy in shelters around now so my dog can have a friend though but I must say I'm still looking for a pure bred if I can find a puppy. IMO as long as you're getting a younger dog you won't have to worry about it having behavioral. For instance my one cat is 2 1/2 years old and he was abused at his previous home we've had him for almost a year now and he's just finally warming up to us but he's afraid of everyone else. An uncle of mine has a dog that is the same way too. They are the most gentle animals I've been around just very timid.
Nismo, we went to the shelter to get a buddy for our golden. We even brought the golden to the shelter to see if the two dogs got along. They played, wrestled and eventually curled up together under a tree. We were thrilled as we'd already fallen in love with the black Lab/GSD we'd picked out so we adopted him.
That day was the last time those two dogs played together. LOL.

My husband bought our black lab from a private breeder then after he met me we rescued a 7 yr old Brittney. After getting our Brittney home we will always rescue over buying from a breeder. There are so many older sweet dogs that get passed up because people all want a puppy.
