View Full Version : Random eggs?
My female leopard gecko has been getting increasingly fat around the midsection over the last several months and her tail has gotten very skinny, despite eating regularly with no problems pooping. We took her to our reptile guy to see if he had any idea what's going on before taking her to the vet. He said that she was making eggs and she would either lay them or reabsorb them, no vet appointment needed. My question is...How long does that take to happen usually? I took these pictures about a month ago and there really isn't any difference now.

I don't know much about gecko's but that doesn't look good. I would see vet, better safe then sorry.

geckos can lay infertile eggs, i had a female that laid eggs before and never had a male with her.
That's what the breeder said when I took her in and he said that's what the bumps are(I'm confident that he knows what he's talking about, he's' been my reptile guy for over 8 years and has never let me down). They can also reabsorb them. My question is generally how long it takes to either lay them or absorb them? Because it's been awhile. I searched all over Google and came up with nothing. Trying to avoid the vet if possible because the bill to tell me that there's absolutely nothing wrong with her is going to cost more than she did. I'll just have to swing by the pet store and ask if he knows.

My female leopard gecko laid a few unfertilized slugs. She's never been bred, yet she laid the eggs. They were unshelled, unfertilized yellow slugs.

those do NOT look like eggs but I also could not see very well
Don't know if BarelyBreathing has seen this but she has ton's of gecko's and would probably be able to help you. Maybe try sending her a PM?

I've been summoned.
Yes, it looks like she's cooking some infertile eggs. It can take up to five weeks if she lays them, but if she reabsorbs them there really isn't a time frame I can give you, but I'd take her to the vet if this lasts more than six weeks.

she could be egg bound
Just a quick update. It's getting worse. Her tail has gotten extremely thin and shriveled, and her tummy is bigger. Took her to the vet yesterday and he has no idea what is going on. He did an ultrasound and said that it looks like fluid. He's going to research and get opinions from colleagues. I also went to talk to the breeder again and he said that it could be organ failure or egg bound. But if it was eggs it should have been obvious on the ultrasound and if it was organ failure, she shouldn't be acting normal. She still eats 3-5 large crickets every three days, hunts them down like a beast like there's nothing wrong. Still poops. Still acts like she always has.
I'm stumped.

Did the vet do a fecal?
Can you give us information on how your gecko is being kept? Perhaps a picture of the enclosure?

She's possibly the most spoiled gecko in NY. A large tank, three hides at different parts. The warm end has a heater underneath as well as a light. We leave both heat lamps on during the colder months with a towel on one end to keep it warm enough. She's in sand, never had any problems with impaction. She's still eating and pooping normal. She has been in this same set up for about 8 years(with regular cleanings/fresh sand, of course). Temperature is around 85-90 on the warm end and 70-75 on the cool end; I'm going to a reptile expo this weekend and hope to get a temp gun to play with.
These are photos that I just took. She had some skin stuck to her toes so I had her walk around in some warm water. I filled the container enough so that her tummy was submerged too.

They didn't do a fecal, but the breeder suggested it. We're just trying to get a fresh sample to bring in. Still haven't heard anything from the vet.

She's losing a lot of weight in her tail. I'd take her to a qualified reptile vet. She needs a fecal done and possibly an x-ray or ultrasound.
As I said in a previous post, she has already been to the vet. Perhaps I wasn't clear, he is a qualified exotic animal vet and has no idea what it is. She already had an ultrasound. It showed what looks like a buildup of fluid. Everyone is confused because she's still acting completely normal and obviously she shouldn't be. I posted here with the hopes that somebody has seen something like this before and could provide some ideas on what it could be. With the exception of a fecal, I've already done all of the common sense things to do.
I don't even know where she would get a parasite; she doesn't eat things from outside and she drinks bottled spring water. Her cricket supply comes from the same place as always for 8 years. But I will be taking poop in once I can get a fresh sample.
The breeder said that perhaps we should treat her as a breeding female, putting her on a high protein diet. Pinkies, etc. to get her weight up.
