I don't know the exact temps for cornsnakes so I'm not sure. Sounds bout right though but don't listen to me until someone confirms this :P
Oh ur so much help :p jk jk
someone help me
Shes not a fan of the prob cord in her tank....i taped some of it, is that bad? will she eat it?? Im worried about her buring her tummy, but i layed down lots of bedding ontop of the pad under her hide...

I wouldn't use tape. If it ever comes up and she ends up sticking to it then you'll have a very sticky situation. It wouldn't be fun.
I would just let it hang. I use a temp gun to monitor my enclosure temps and place the probe on the heat pad.
The probe is supposed to read the temperature of the heat mat and regulate how much power it needs to maintain your desired temperature. You'll have to use some sort of temperature taking apparatus to help with it. The heat mat is attached to the underside right?
Lastly, this is why I use tubs or don't recommend tanks as enclosures. They are finicky to get everything right.
So now i neeed to buy a heat gun?? i have 2 thermometers inn the tank as well? im worried about the probe coming off the mat. and yes the matt is on the bottoms of the tank. she dont like it...its almost like shes trying to excape? iv ever seen her do this before....
theapexgerman
02-03-12, 11:39 PM
Temp guns arnt expensive I got mine on amazone for 15 bucks free shipping and I switch over to tubs cause there way easier to maintained only snake I got I. A tank is my nelson just cause he's in the living room
Ok i took all the tape out. i thought that but i dont wannt her to strangle her self either?
Ok thats donnt really help me right now, i only have a tank... :( she does not like that probe in there shes going all around it..i think it kinda freaks her out. she hasnt been in her hide since i put her back on her tank. shes crawled all over the wire and her hide. and is moving faster then ussual, trying to get out too.... :(

Hmmm I never had a problem like u having now but stick with the tank there's nothing wrong with using a tank
So im having a problem then? HELP!!!!!!
WHAT DO I DO!!!!!

Your not hurting your snake just take the probe out and w8 till tommrow your snake will be find gives your snake some rest and less stress
Well how am i suposta tell the temp of her mat without the prob?
theapexgerman
02-04-12, 12:07 AM
Long as its warm in the room not cold your snake will be find till tommrow just don't let it get cold where ever you have the snake at
Right now in the tank it says its 70, should i keep the matt off too???
theapexgerman
02-04-12, 12:11 AM
No keep mat on there just don't turn on the mat and 70 is ok for a day just get some rest and when u wake up you will have a clear head
Ok so turn the mat off and take the prob out. done and done. shes still kinda freaking out. but ill turn the heat up in my appartment and make sure its warm, i hope she dont reject the mat and probe. it cost alot of money...Thanks. 70 wont hurt her?
theapexgerman
02-04-12, 12:22 AM
No she's safe at 70 a little higher won't hurt but 70 find for a day later on in the day more people well be on I'm getting ready for bed I got to go to work in 6 hours so ill be back on then

Ok first off breath! Your snake is simply exploring something new in its home. I put the probe to my heat mat under the hide on the hot side. I use that to hold the probe in place. 84-86 is a great temp to set your heat mat to. Your snake will NOT strangle itself on the cord in the tank. It is just climbing and "playing" on it.
Ya i stressed to much so i took it out and after i sleep ill put ot back in either tomorrow or the next day give her a chance to rest as well.
millertime89
02-04-12, 03:04 PM
You can put it back in now, slight changes in enclosure usually makes a snake come out and explore a bit. There's a difference between curiosity and stress. Just relax a bit, snakes, especially corns, are hardy critters.
If the cable still worries you, the other thing you can do is put the probe between the heat mat and the tank, and adjust the temps on the thermostat till you get the desired temp in the enclosure. My thermostat is set to 100 and I get about 78 in the enclosure and the ambient in my room is 70, just for reference.
I put it back in, and what i did is i put the probe under her hide in the corner, and then the "string" that connects to the probe thats hanging in the tank i covered with a plant. she seems to be ok with it now. shes in her hide, lastnight she refused to go in there. so i think were ok now. the thermostat reads 84.2? that ok?? Also do i need a heat gun, even is i have thermomaters on each end of the tank still? im going into the city tomorrow and can pick one up IF i ABSOLUTELY need one...

Temp guns are fun!
millertime89
02-04-12, 03:36 PM
temp guns are loads of fun, I wouldn't stick the probe in the hide either, it'll get hotter in the hide than in the rest of the enclosure because air doesn't move and its a small enclosed space.

Corn snakes are fine at room temp as long as they have a warm spot to go to. The Air in the tank can be at regular room temp with no issues. She only needs to be concerned with the hot spot. The temp being under a hide is fine for a corn.
Ok but were the mat is, is were she always lays, and thats were her hide is. so what do i do with the probe cause does it not need to be touching the heat mat?
Gungirl
02-04-12, 03:44 PM
You should have 2 hides one on the heat mat also known as her hot side. the other hide should be on the opposite side of the tank where there is no heat mat also known as the cold side. The probe has to be on the heat mat to be able to regulate how hot it gets. Keep the probe on top of the heat mat under the hide. It will be fine. If she gets to warm she will go into the other hide to adjust her temp as she needs to.
Ok she feels cold to the touch is that normal? i know their cold blooded and everything but yeah. Lol
Gungirl
02-04-12, 03:51 PM
yes she should feel cold to the touch. Her hot spot is only 84-85f your body is 98ish so you will always be warmer than her.
Another thing i think is weird, since i put the heat mat in, she has berried her whole bodie under her bedding and not under her hide, but sprung out accrost her tank...
Gungirl
02-04-12, 03:54 PM
It's all very normal. My corn has started falling asleep with only his head in the hide leaving his body on top of his hide. Some snakes are odd balls and silly. I would only start to worry If I saw my snake laying upside down on its back with its belly in the air. She will find a comfy spot and might hang out there for a day or 2 then find another spot.
millertime89
02-04-12, 04:13 PM
anything less than roughly 98F is gonna feel cooler to the touch.

2 of my 3 bury themselves in the substrate, they go where they are most comfortable and feel safest.
CK SandBoas
02-04-12, 04:16 PM
My Kenyan Sand Boas exclusively bury themselves in substrate, they have never used a hide, my Brazilian Rainbow Boa will also bury himself in the aspen bedding on occasion, so it is perfectly normal :)

Kylie! Hi! :) Sorry I was gone for a while. Bella was probably just exploring the new probe in the tank. She most likely was not stressed. Relax a bit! Corn snakes are hardy critters. It's also not possible for her to strangle herself on the cord of the probe, so don't worry about that. You're probably stressing out while she's just exploring ;) Your heat mat should be between 84-86F. Once she realizes that her hide is nice and warm, she'll be going into it. It's normal for her to bury herself under the bedding, and not in her hide. The only times you'll have to worry is if she's lying belly up. Her "trying to escape" is also normal; my Pika who's 5mos old still tries to get out and reaches for the top of the tank and tries to push the top off. My 2yr old doesn't, but that's mostly because he's probably to lazy to try anymore :p Her trying to escape is not "I hate this place!" but rather "oooh what else is out there? I want to see!" It'll take a while since your new to snake keeping, but eventually you will get to know her behavior better. Relax, she's just a normal, healthy corn snake getting used to her new environment. :)

Kylie, you need to stop micro managing your snake. It's an animal. It's going to do things. Just like how we let cats and dogs roam and do their thing in our homes, snakes will do the same in theirs.
Havnt seen bella in 4 days...i miss her :(

02-07-12, 01:58 PM
Think of how often you'll be able to handle her once she's on a steady feed schedule and acclimated to her home.
And if you do your part, she will live to be pretty old.
I know how hard it is, but you have to power through :)
My corns rarely come out during day time though.
Yeah my bf is up later, and earlier then me so he sees her alot more then i do. Also should i be feeding her every week? or every 2 weeks? thats one thing im confused about... i just fed her last thursday...do i feed her again in 2 days? or in 9 days?
The previous owners were feeding her every 2 weeks,do i stick to that?
youngster
02-07-12, 02:19 PM
Depends on how much you feed her. I don't stick to a schedule. Sometimes I feed smaller meals once a week, sometimes bigger meals every other week.
millertime89
02-07-12, 02:22 PM
What size prey were you feeding and how big is she?
Even without that info I would probably just stick to the 2 week thing. Its not hurting her and once she's on a set schedule and acclimated that'll give you some more time to take her out.
Well the previous ownders were feeding her 3 hoppers every 2 weeks, i have only had her long enough for 1 feed and i fed her 2 hoppers, right now i have 3 hoppers in my freezer and after those are gone i was going to move her up to 1 adult mouse, but i was just a little lost on when i should feed (how often.)
Shes 2 years old, i personally dont think shes very wide, but shes probably 3+ feet long??
Snakefood
02-07-12, 03:04 PM
I feed my adults every 10 days, depending on thier sizes, they get anywhere from an adult mouse (20-30 grams) to a weanling/juvi rat (30-50 grams), my bigger males have even taken down rabbit pinkies, which are about the same size as juvi rats.
Corns are EASY to switch from live to F/T, and from mouse to rat to rabbit, they really don't seem to care, as long as your feeding them. (at least that's the case with my 6)
You don't want to see the spine or ribs, that means your not feeding enough
you dont want to see skin between her scales, that means your feeding too much
BTW, you have a gorgeous little girl there, and welcome to our communtiy!!
Thanks! i love her!
So i should go to adult mouse, and if it dont matter when im going to stick to her rutien ( every 2 weeks.) and no it was sooo easy to switch her to F/T!!!
Snakefood
02-07-12, 03:16 PM
Yes, she should definately be eating an adult (20-30 gram) mouse at 2 years old every 10-14 days, she will get bigger and you will resize her prey items as she does. Corns tend to top out at jumbo mice (31-40 grams) or juvi rats (40+ grams). Most get to be about 4 foot, but I have a 4.5 foot male!! He's HUGE!!
theapexgerman
02-07-12, 03:19 PM

Yea I know there hybrids I was going to breed my nelson and hondurain but got bash for the idea witch I'm still going to just waiting till next year
So! I know I just joined, but I wanted to give a little advice I was given and things I know that could really help with understanding snakes as a pet! (i just read through all 21 pages to make sure i wasn't repeating too much!
You mentioned early on asking if you should find a way to keep the snake "active"
You have to realize that snakes don't need "exercise" in the way that we "need" exercise. (I'm a personal trainer, so I understand exercise! :D) A snake (most snakes) will ideally sit in their hide and feel safe, maybe even for weeks or months at a time until a big tasty looking meal comes by and doesn't notice the snake. the snake will then eat that meal. For this reason, i like feeding by placing a F/T in the enclosure on the top of a sandwich-sized Rubbermaid lid (to avoid substrate getting on it) Then I can dim/shut off the lights and let the snake feel like (when it smells the mouse) has discovered some food while hiding safely in its hide.
Speaking of which, you also mentioned that you freaked the snake out a bit when you lifted its hide. A great tidbit I was told is that you shouldnt bother a snake or especially move a snakes hide while it is in it, because thats where it feels secure, you dont want your snake to be constantly thinking the hide might suddenly go away (thus stressing it out too much) if you do that a lot.
This ties into the handling thing I noticed. Think about it from the snakes perspective. You're sitting at home, watching tv and talking with someone on the phone or.. whatever, then suddenly a GIGANTIC HAND RAINS IN FROM THE SKY, RIPS YOUR ROOF OFF AND PICKS YOU OFF THE COUCH. How would you feel? Probably a little freaked out! Remember how HUGE you are compared to the snake, you are the equivalent of a tanker truck wanting to take you out and play for a while.
That said, i don't think anybody acknowledged your cat issue. I would keep your cat out of the room that your snake is in. Completely. Let's go back to my previous role-playing idea. Put yourself in your house, but its made completely of glass. Now imagine a 50 foot cat with gigantic arm-sized claws pawing at your house while you're trying to take a nap. Not very fun is it? To the snake, that is a predator that's trying to eat it, so instead of focusing on resting and waiting for the next meal, it's trying not to die a horrible claw-related death. It will also probably start to relate the smell of your cat with giant death-claws, and so the smell may start to stress the snake out as well.
Uhh other stuff..
1 big meal every other week (as people have suggested) is better, remember.. these are not mammals, they are designed to eat very large meals and then chill and digest for a while. Humans spend ~40-60 (depends on activity level and amount of lean mass) of the calories we consume PURELY to maintain our bodies at a correct temperature (it actually takes more calories to cool our bodies than it does to warm them). So imagine we didn't have to do that, we'd all be eating way less.
I would stick with an under-tank pad and go with the temp gun, instead of an over-head lamp. You're better off making it a little too cold than too hot. A little too cold, and they just wont move around as much, a little too hot and you can kill your snake. Imagine when you get a horrible flu and your temperature only raises 3 degrees, and you have a 102 fever you feel like youre cooking yourself? well 3 degrees wont be nearly as bad for a snake, but being 10-15 degrees too high can make the snake very uncomfortable.
I'm trying not to bee too ranty, but i hope those help you understand where your snake is coming from!
Last but not least...
you said "i want to hold him 24/7" - That's why people here have so many snakes!
I only recently (within the last year) got my first snake, and am working on getting another cause i need to play with snakes more haha..
Hope I helped!
Wow thanks!! i have some more questions, its been a bit since iv been on.
I just purchased a new tank ( its a bit bigger/wider) cause the one i moved bella into is not a good tank ( had brocken seals and the lid is crap she gets stuck init) for a snake its more of a fish tank and wont let my mat be on there very good. ANYWASE, the tank i got came with some "stick" stuff, that looks like you would use for frogs ( she had a ball in it previously) Also came with some "all natuarl cocanut lay" bedding type stuff its a brick and you soak it in water and dry it off and mix it with aspen ( its almost like a dirt) can i use that for my corn? she had taken her snake into the vet for somthing not to sure what it was but it was in this tank, now i cleaned it with bleach ect. should be ok right???
millertime89
02-18-12, 02:59 AM
should be yeah, but anything that was in it previously I would pull out and chuck in the garbage.
I wouldn't use the brick stuff that you mix with water and then with aspen, but that's just me personally. I'm a huge fan of my cyprus mulch.
As far as the mat not sticking very well, you can put it under the tank and put the thermostat probe between the mat and the glass and just bump temps a bit. I had Nero in a tank like this for 4 months or so and he did great in it.
Make sure you let it air dry for about 48 hours to ensure all the bleach is evaporated.

Personally I use compressed coconut husk which I buy in a brick. I really like it. It's cheap help hold humidity great and is right easy to store. Now there are two types: the chunked husk and something that looks ground up. I use the chunked husk.
I bleached everything it came with..still ok to keep?
And this stuff is a brick, says its all natural cocoanut, not ok to mix it with aspen? aspen is what i am using now but i have 2 sealed packs of the "dirt" and dont want to just throw then out.
Lankyrob
02-18-12, 11:14 AM
Because corns dont need the added humidity i would just keep the "bricks" until you get your next snake - chances are it will be a BP and then it will need the extra moisture ;)
Okay :) and yeah i LOVE allessias pika, hes a bp right?! i want one like him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But first i need to get my $*** together with learning things with bella. shes confusing and supsta be the easiest snake i must be ******** haha! i just want to handle her, but i THINK she was going into shed, now she looks normal and hasnt shed yet so i am not to sure what to do. i was asking alessia questions but shes not replying so i think she got annoyed with me haha! i wouldnt blame her! now is bellas having issues shedding is there anything i can do, she does not seem to like the moss, or her pool....the previous owners did give her baths and said she loved them, but then again they didnt seem to know much either...

ANOTHER QUESTION! LOL
Bella "yawned" or opened her mouth as wide as she could, i caught her doing that the day right before i fed her last time, does this mean shes hungry or accualy yawning lol i skipped feedin yesterday, and now to sure if i should have cause it does not seem like she is ready to shed yet i didnt even try to feed her i thought id leave her alone. she is out of her hide and exploring a bit today does this mean she might be feeling better? should i try to feed her today??

As long as she isnt doing it a lot (mouth breathing)
she's probably just resetting her jaw, they do it from time to time.. its really cute when colubrids yawn :P
you can try feeding her, my snake will feed whenever i put food near him, she might not care if shes in shed, if thats the case.. no big deal, the big thing is a lot of snakes wont like to feed while in shed and then you just wasted a mouse for no reason (refreezing is a debatable practice which i avoid)
Im 2 days late on feeding her, should i feed her still? it wont screw her up? then ill just feed her 2 saterdays from now? mice are so not expencive im not worried.
And it was, it was adorable. i caught her opening her mouth REALLY wide last feeding day, and then today. and i cought her "open mouth breathing"( mouth was hardly open but enough for me to see) twice just the other day. havnt seen her do that again....

Well thats good. lol hope to hear from you on Fbook :)
Keep ur tank at 75-80 would be the best temp.. i would say just use a 75 watt bulb on during the day and off at night to simulate real days for her. water temp for her bath isnt as big of deal try to use around room temp but dont bath her all the time once a month would be fine u dont want to stress her out. hope this helps and good luck with u new girl:)

They are an organ that are like heat sensors, they can detect heat without any light. Most pythons, some boas and vipers have them.

cool info: Infrared sensing in snakes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infrared_sensing_in_snakes)
:D
im pretty sure colubrids lack heat vents though

literally heat vision, think predator movies or heat vision goggles (not literally that way, but basically)
they use it so they can recognize prey (which is why it helps to warm up frozen thawed a bit over room temp) and also why some snakes may mistake your hand for food if it smells like rodent, because its warm fleshy and smells like food.. so it must be!

No, they're the heat pits to sense heat. The nostrils are on top of his snout :)

Ugh alessia i love your photos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ALL OF THEM!

depends on the type of snake, some have very limited vision to the point of only really being able to see light or dark "shapes" but not much else while others can see relatively well (though not on par with humans)
most snakes also cannot see right in front of them, as their eyes are off to the sides, most tracking/etc is all done by smell or heat and smell. as for colors, snakes have rods and cones in their eyes, though in different numbers than humans, They do not have the diversity colored oil droplets in their photoreceptors that mammals and birds posses, so while they do have color vision they most likely don't "see" as many colors as we do, such as when humans are "color blind" many cannot see certain oranges or differentiate between blue and green, but can still see certain colors.
http://www.oneminuteastronomer.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/rods_cones.gif
This is what the "back lining" of your eye is composed of, a snake would have a similar, but less complex structure
when light enters your eye, it actually refracts the light onto the inside back of your eye, which is what senses color/light/etc. people who need glasses have poorly shaped eyes, and therefore the light is "refracted" poorly and shows up blurry!
rods sense brightness and cones sense coloration, to put it as simple as possible :P
Oh wow thanks! i love all this info! :)

Do you know lots about corn snakes?

Corn snakes got their name both from the pattern on their belly, which looks like indian corn, and from old southern farmers who stored their harvested corn in wooden buildings called cribs. Rats and mice were attracted to the cribs to feed on the corn, and corn snakes were attracted to the cribs to feed on the rodents, much to the delight and appreciation of the farmers.
(blatantly stolen from: Corn Snake Pictures & Facts (http://fohn.net/corn-snake-pictures-facts/))
corn snakes are colubrids, which means they are closely related to king and milk snakes. Corn snakes are "north american red rat snakes" apparently. (according to wikipedia!)
*shrug* cant find much either haha
i dont have a corn snake, so im not exactly an expert :P

This is a great book about corn snakes, Kylie :) Amazon.com: Corn Snakes: The Comprehensive Owner's Guide (Herpetocultural Library, The) (0748869707066): Kathy Love, Bill Love: Books (http://www.amazon.com/Corn-Snakes-Comprehensive-Herpetocultural-Library/dp/1882770706/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1329622382&sr=8-1)
also, the author (Kathy Love) is the one who sold me my corn snake way back in the day... didn't know that at the time though! Just a cool fact :)

snakes are so much faster than most people realize, they try not to move a lot to preserve energy but if they want they could book it and we'd never catch them ;)

It takes time and patience to get them to trust you.
Yeah, it sucks cause i havnt been able to hold her alot since iv had her maybe 6 times for 5 mins. IF THAT> the day i got her was feeding day, then she wasnt feeling good, now shes going to be shedding, then eating :( SAD PANDA!
BELLA SHED LASTNIGHT!!!
and it was all in 1 peice!!!
IM SO PROUD OF HER!!!!!!

So the whole peice must mean that im doing something right, as the previous owners said she shed in peises last time.
Does it hurt them or make their skin sensitive to shed? just out of curiosity
( sorry half asleep and so excited, cant spell)

Make sure you check the tip of the tail and the eyecaps are enclosed in the shed, a nuce one piece like that means good husbandry so well done!!
I tend to leave my snakes alone for 24 hours after a shed, i believe it is tiring for them. :)
I checked the shed, i saw both eyes and head, theres a little snag but i checked her and dont see any shed left on her so it might be in the tank, so im feeding her tomorrow then 3-4 days later im going to be moving her into her new home and ill check for the missing peice, but it does not seem to be on her. shes beautiful, both her eyes look normal ( red ) her body is bright and colorful, her tummys white and before she had what looked like a scab on her head well its gone. she also pooped LOL :p
i havnt seen her pee yet...but who knows its white so could be in the shavings i guess...
No you just got to take lots and lots. For every 20 you might get 1 good one and for every 50 good ones you might get 1 great pic lol
What post are you talking bout? with the piks lol sorry i get confused easily >.<
And yeah im so proud!!!! i even congradulater her, i litteraly said CONGRATS BELLA! and i told her she looked beautiful then she poped out of her hide and rested her head on her stick lol

i was so proud, and i think she feels amazing! shes gotten a much better life with someone who knows nothing but is doing all she can to make this snake happy and healthy!!!! all my worries are gone...other then the open mouth breathing witch i haven't noticed her doing yet today!! I guarantee it's the best shes felt after two years of sub par husbandry!
Ya i sure hope so! im in live with her and snakes!
When i first got her she had, to small of a tank, 1 hide that was 3 times to small she couldnt fit her whole bodie init, 1 small water dish thats like TEENY! and was in a filthy tank. now she has a bigger tank, 2 large hides, a large water dish and a 24/7 clean home, always fresh water and a ownder who will be paying attention to her.
One more question for right now, does perfume or air spray, sented candles ECT. bother snakes?

I would assume so. I would avoid them just in case around the snake, usually perfumes are rather abrasive (I know they bother the crap out of me, i cant even really wear cologne or anything or my sinuses burn)
do you have a picture of the updated enclosure/a happy bella?
I will after i feed her and she digests, i just bought a new tank for her so im going to feed her and everything first and then ill post a pik. or get alessia to cause i dont know how to.
So i should avoide spraying things around her? is it ok to handle her ( not today or anything) wearing perfume? i ALWAYS have somthin on i just want to know if i should try to wash it off before i handle her.
Shes definitly feeling better, still shy tho. i have seen her out of her hide 5 times already today...but when i move around her home she runs away lol

It's a good habit to have to wash your hands before and after you handle Bella :) to be safe at least. I don't handle my snakes if I have lotion on my hands or anything like that.
Good luck with feeding tomorrow!! :D
(I'll gladly post pics for you too, you know that :) )
:) i always do wash my hands, but she crawls on my chest and thats were the perfume ussualy is... im going to get piks of her feeding. i got a video on my old phone of her feeding last time but its dark and crappy

Shes beautiful. Keep her warm side 75-80 degrees. I find that the heating pads break quickly. Get a clamp lamp (if you buy one from a farm feed store they are cheaper) and get a heating bulb from the pet store. Get a red or blue bulb so it doesnt bother her at night. And use natural light during the day (keep your bulb on for heat). As for baths. Dont give your snake a bath unless shes having shedding problems. If you give her too many baths it will dry out the natural oils in her skin. Get a water dish big enough for her to submerge in, she will soak when she needs too. Aspen bedding is fine. Newspaper is good, peat moss is better looking. I have had my corn for 5 years and shes 5 feet long. :) For the size tank shown you should only need a 75 maybe 100 watt bulb. It looks like a good size tank for now.

this is totally wrong, corns need a hot end temp of 86f - 75f would be ok for the cool end but if the hot end was only 75f then the snake could have issues digesting food and become seriously ill.
i have it at 90 right now because she was mouth breathing and might have a respitory infection...should i turn it down now thats shes shed? and i am using a heat mat i just bought a new one today and returned the bulb i had. i like the mat much better then the lamp and the thermostat helps that way im not going crazy checking the temp 24/7.
thanks for the info but i think im good with all the help iv gotten already!!!

The best place for any snake is in the room with the least traffic/commotion.
oh right i asked you that already didnt i? LOL SORRY!
i want her in my living room so people can see her but i want whats best for her, i saw her out more when she was in my living room then i moved her into my bedroom and didnt see her much

When you first had her in your living room she was exploring her new home which is probably why you saw her more. But the best place is your bedroom where it's quiet and there isn't a lot of people walking by. ;)

Tobacco, you get a bit of a high from smoking Tobacco in a pipe or a cigar, quite relaxing really. I can only handle a cigar every few months, but its a REALLY popular hobby.
Pipe smoking? exactly what kind of pipe smoking? thats CRAZY!
tobacco pipe smoking, custom briar pipes, etc etc. i cannot stand the "green stuff"
there's no inhaling or anything, its just puffing on it for the flavor/relaxation of the whole thing
its like a cigar but cheaper and tastes better in my opinion.
I spend 99% of my time being extremely healthy, so i justify it in that i only smoke about once a week anyway, almost never in the winter! i also tend to drink craft beer on occasion. mmm allagash
I have a few cool custom pipes and whatnot.. but i dont want to post pics and derail your thread too much :P
i'd post my blog link that talks of these shenanigans if nobody minds in my signature or whatever, dunno if im allowed to so I didnt.
the thread was about what someone suggests as a blend the person above them would like based on a blend they liked
so say someons said "i like orlik golden slice!"
2nd post: try some erinmore flake, it tastes sort of fruity like orlik does!
i like.. penzance!
3rd post:
try blue mountain, its a lot like penzance.. i like ___ and so on with a lto of discussion in between, i think it lasted about 3 years

lol, I know the feeling!
I'll have to try to get a picture, but he always does this thing when i pick him up and he slithers out towards my face and flicks my nose with his tongue (which tickles A LOT) then he turns around and doesn't care any more. he does it EVERY time i hold him anywhere near my head, its sickeningly cute according to my girlfriend ;)
AWE! what kinda snake? i was holding her when i first got her and my friend adam was sitting on a chair and i was just showing him her, and she streched allllll the way our, right up to his face....and then that was it. it was so cute! he was scared shitles!
Well i fed bella her FIRST adult mouse today, she did great other then she decided to eat the back end first...struggled a bit but never gave up! now just to wait 48 hours tehn i get to hold my beautiful baby! and move her into her new home!

Shed skins get very stretched in the process of shedding. So it's not an accurate length of the snake.

Thats good to know, about how much do they stretch? i measured his first shed when i got him and it was 25", he looks a bit shorter than that, ive seen him stretch out along his whole tank and take up 3/4 of it and its 30" long *shrug*
You're welcome! whats his name?
id still say she is about 3 1/2-4 ft long....
BUT, how exactly are you suposta measure a snake? lol they dont ussualy stay stretched completely out!

A good technique is to get a piece of string... use the string to "trace" the snake on its back... then measure the string :)

i had to, he was out of his hide so he had it coming!
looks like hes just over 24 inches..
Then i compared it to this.. i figured it'd be worth a try.
put a ruler near your snake, then take a picture of it relatively straight, and follow directions, he came out to "23.91" inches
so looks to be relatively accurate!

The sheds can stretch anywhere between 10-20%, but if it should get wet for example then it can stretch a lot more.

sound about right then, his shed was 25" when i first got him, and hes grown a few inches, so he was probably ~22 inches then, i noticed its definitely "springy" as well, you can stretch it out a bit if you try to, lol!
I mean.. unless you need/want an exact measurement you could always just measure the shed and subtract ~15%, or use the thing i linked

The easiest way to measure a snake is to place them against a wall. The will almost always stretch out along the wall and then you can measure them.

Because we are not overly worried about sizes of our snakes we dont measure or weigh them, we judge their lengths by handling them and guestimating.
But....I think im doing good now, shes shed, and it was a full shed. i fed her last night, this one was lame she ate the mouse at the wrong end so it took her about half hour to just eat the damn thing. and it was kinda stressfull for me lol. but i think im doing good with her now that thats all over with ( the shed) that had me worried as it was my first shed, but it came off in one peice witch means i have good husbandery and she has enough moisture in her tank ( previous ownders said she NEVER sheds in pull peices) I PRUVED THEM WRONG! ahah. but on thursday she is moving into her new PERMANINT home, its a 55 gallon tank ( shes in a 20 right now) and im just worried bout the heat matt its suposta drop off into the cool end but the pet store does not carey the size i need so i need to figure that out some how. and then i need to modify the lid of the tank just cause it had a VERY light screen and optimus likes to jump on the lid and watch bella do..nothing. we are TRYING to teach her not too, but i dont want to take any chances of her jumping up adn breaking right threw the screen. and then the stad that the tank is on isnt the best cause it needs room between the heat matt and the stand...ugh so confusing and i think this is the longest
Im not overly worried about the length and the weight but i am getting asked those questions alot and im kinda curious! :)
I really need to learn how to tell their moods, waht their actions mean, and just stuff like that!!! thats the next thing im working on!
comment EVER! lol sorry

Don't stress over the heat issue. Corns are not overly picky about their heat. As long as you have a small warm spot for it to heat up if needed it will be fine. My corns viv is on top of my Royals viv. At this point in time I am not even running a heat source on my corns viv. My royals viv heats up 1/4 of the bottom of my corns viv enough. Other wise my corn is at room temp which is 66-70 and he does great.

02-21-12, 11:13 AM
I'd also like to add that one of my corns escaped and was in 50-65 degree temps for over a month until he turned up without the slightest sign of an RI or any other health problem
Yeah i knowits easier for them to recover from being cold then to hot...right?

yuuuppppppp
Only thing is, i hva ea 55 gallon tank for her and user Alessia had said that
you want it to be more than just the hide that has the heat... it should heat half the cage and then the temps will drop a little on the cool side, so she wants me to get the large matt but the pet store does not cary them and i have 2 days to get her into her tank

Kylie how warm is your house?
If your house is above 65 your snake will be fine as long as it has a hot spot to retreat to. Corns are one of the few snakes that do not need a lot of heat. If you had a BP or anything I would never say it was ok but you have a corn. It will be fine.
And my house is always really warm, except she is in our bedroom and my fiance always has a fan going on light every night,
Do they mind vacuming? i was vacuming for like a hr and i looked over at bellas tank and all i saw was her head peering out of her hide just glaring at me LOL like " you woke me up >.< )

well if a snake could speak i bet it would say some terrible stuff about us vacuuming hahaha they feel the vibrations and thats what she was probably inspecting! has the time come for her first feeding yet?
OH iv already fed her twice :) yesterday was her second time. first time i had to feed her 2 hoppers ( only cause thats wat the previous owners were fedding and they gave me 2), witch i switched her from live to F/T on. Yesterday was her second, and i fed her, her VERY FIRST F/T adult mouse :\ she did pre good she struggled i think cause she was so excited and missed her feeding by a week due to shedin she snached at its back end lol.

You can just use aspen by itself, you'd want it to be at least a little moist to keep the humidity up a little bit.

well not added humidity but you wouldnt want it to be stone dry i'd imagine
Its a all natural cocoanut brick type thing. i have to use it as its already in my tank...alot of it. next time i will only be using aspen tho lol so it will be ok if its a LITTLE damp/cold...

what're the dimensions on the back of the tank? If you want something really nice you could find an image that is large enough and go to Kinkos or another print shop and have them print it for you on some nice paper.
Its a all natural cocoanut brick type thing. i have to use it as its already in my tank...alot of it. next time i will only be using aspen tho lol so it will be ok if its a LITTLE damp/cold...
ohoh ok, for a second i was imagining dirt from outside or something i was like o.O whaa
No haha it looks like dirt tho...and she LOVES to dig so i think it will be good for her, correct me if im wrong....

just use cypress or aspen, let her bury in that.
I use cypress mulch, but it is probably better suited for snakes that require higher humidity like mine does, cypress mulch is awesome for burrowing/etc (he loves it) when it has a little moisture but if it dries out its not the best, I mist every few days or so to keep humidity around 70-80% when hes shedding so the substrate is usually moist, and 60-70% otherwise.

you can let it dry out before putting it in the enclosure.
Its in there now, im going to let it dry out before i put her in there then then when i clean her home ill use just aspen.
But is it ok to use right? its not going to hurt her?? :) i dont want to waste it now :( i was told it was ok to use..second opinions?
Also i think bella is "healthy" now ( not that she never was) but is it ok to turn her heat down now? its at 88 right now?

You're talking about the coconut husk stuff right? I don't see a problem with it. What's the temperature gradient?
My setup is the same as skumbo's it sounds like, keeps the humidity in 70-90 % range (except the BP) and I let it dry out till it drops down to high 60s/low 70s before I spray it again. Usually have to spray once or twice a week.
It was making me mad, so i decided to take more of it out and just use what she is used too ( aspen bedding) but there still a little dirt. ill get alessia to post piks of her new home for me ( i dont know how to post piks LOL)

The roughness will give her something to grip if/when she climbs on it

dunno you could probably just dig it in or "support" it with two rocks or something, thats really up to you how many you want in there
What kinda scale do you use to measure them?
Alessia what was that book?
IS it 36 or 48 hours after a feed were you can handle them?

I use an oxo brand scale. You just need one that weighs in grams... like a scale to weigh food. Use the demo on my website (on the feeding page).
The book is this one by Kathy Love:

The ideal is the more time you give them, the better. 48hrs is the minimum, and is the rule of thumb that most people adhere to. Personally, I use the 48hrs rule for mine.

48 hr rule for me. Or if the prey is a tad larger than normal I watch the bump to go down first.

I'm sure she'll be happy with the new home, I just moved Genghis over to a bigger tub and he took about an hour moving about then decided he liked it and went into his hide, lol!

Is there a "certain" time that snakes shed?
alessia55
02-23-12, 12:25 PM
Nope, each snake has it's own cycle. As babies they shed more often than as adults. You'll eventually pick up when she's due for a shed again.
Ok so as of right now the only times i can not handle her is at night ( when she sleeps) 36-48hours after she eats and during shed period??

She sleeps at night? Corns are nocturnal...

really?? everywhere I read they are diurnal...???
alessia55
02-23-12, 01:09 PM
Just confirmed with my book about corn snakes I have and with a bunch of websites about corn snakes... the majority say that corn snake are primarily diurnal...
alessia55
02-23-12, 01:14 PM
Also I thought that the round pupils are an indicator of a diurnal animal versus the slit pupils of nocturnal animals?
So she is or isnt nocternal? :s lol

My snake is up night and day.. I handle him when I want to minus the 48 hrs after he eats. If he is in his hide I take him out. He could care less....

My corns TEND to be more active morning and late evening, tho i do see them out and about anytime of the night or day. :)
i never see bella out unless i take her out :( i want that to change, i dont want her to be so shy either!!! i NEVER see her house roaming around unless i have just handled her and just put her back in, then she will go into her plants and hide then roam for like 5 mins around her hides ect. then go in and i wont see her untill the next time i hold her!
alessia55
02-23-12, 03:33 PM
She's still getting used to her new home, sights, smells...She'll eventually get into a routine and she'll learn to trust you and she'll get more confident and you'll see her out more :)

One of my two year old (almost) corns has only just gotthe confidence to come out of his hides during the day, his "brother from another clutch" has been out in the open from day one and is very confident, give it time and the snake will gain confidence in most cases, tho it is always possible that she will never be one of those snakes that likes being on view.
