A clean, healthy snake won't have an odor to it by itself. However, you could be smelling bedding, higher humidity, or droppings.

Bah, I should clarify: By higher humidity I mean that the damp air could be making the bedding smell different than the same bedding would normally smell in drier conditions.

your question stinks... :p
smells I have experienced.
Musty - usually when water bowls get slopped on the bedding, a musty smelling mold will grow just under the water bowl.
feces - smells like poop, a loaded diaper
snake musk - this is just the grossest odour next to monitor poop ever, when a snake gets scared it will emit a liquid musk to gross out predators.

I don't know, I think I'll take monitor musk over large boa/python musk any day.

I have no idea. I've never noticed a smell on any of my snakes except for a few rescues I had who came in covered in urates. Perhaps he was laying in something funky at the store before you brought him home?

Boas musk. My male musked when we had his sex confirmed. Hasn't before hasn't since. Reptibark has a hint of odur but its not a bad smell. I'll bet he peed and you haven't seen it in the viv. My boas only smell when they pee and crawl through it or when I put in fresh substrate they will smell like it for a day or 2.

You haven't described what you're smelling *lol* is bad? I'm guessing so...
It might be his breath...or he may drool a bit. I have two different BPs that drool. One actually doesn't do it anymore, but when we first got him, and he got upset, he would huff and puff and drool a bit...Boy that stank!
My other has scar tissue covering a nostril, so when he gets upset at all he just drooooools and it's sooo gross *lol*
(No worries no RIs or anything, they are just gross snakes *lol*)
If it smells like dead rat it maybe drool! Unless he's peed in there and you haven't seen it, or if you check his scales make sure they don't have scale rot or anything.
