Using a hook

Anyone have any suggestions what is the best way to get uses to using a hook? I currently only have a corn snake who i have never needed a hook for. A very long term goal would be to be comfortable handling hots, but thats not here nor there, just a direction i want to work towards (Many years from now). Mainly now i just want to get familiar with using a hook and the techniques that go along with it. any suggestions or tips? thanks

I would say just start using the hook on your corn. Watch video's where people use hooks on snakes and try to mimic what they do.

I don't keep hots but I do keep aggressive arboreals. Basically get used to paying closer attention to your snake than most people would pay attention to a corn snake. Always know where their head is and how far their strike range is. Think of your hook as an extension of your arm.

Once you get comfortable with using a hook and reading behavior, you may want to look into something like an Amazon tree boa. They will keep you on your toes.

Your corn is a great snake to start practicing hooking with. Don't lift him high up in the sky or anything like that. Work on surfaces close to its body in case he slithers off. Youtube videos can be a great help. Remember to keep your movements confident and smooth. Good luck! :)

This is very good advice.

Might i also add, learn to predict movements and respond accordingly. The use of two hooks although obsolete for a corn is a very important skill as well.

Any fast moving aggressive snake can teach you. Get comfortable with the hook on your corn. Learn your hook, use a small one to shift decorations or the water dish.

It's always a good idea to learn how far specific snakes can strike. Especially if you decide to go field herping. I don't own hots buy have used my hook an wild ones while herping. I've also owned a few aggressive kings, rats, gtps, emmys and others.

The Emmy wa always fun. Leaning how to take a pearch out with a hook or remove him from a perch and get him to sit calmly on the hook.
