Ok so about a week ago i got a BP as a gift (not sure what kind) because one of my mom's friends stole my BRB. The humidity levels have been around 60% up until two days ago when they've been spiking to 80%
i've looked at many different sites and all have been giving me mixed information. What humidity levels do they need? And what high's and lows are unhealthy for them?

I keep my BP around 60% unless he is in shed then I go to about 75%. He does very well and I have never had to assist him in a shed. If the humidity gets down to 45-55% I notice he seems to have flaky scales. That only happened twice when I first got him. I haven't had a problem since.

I spray mine up to about 65-70% and let it "dry" over 24 hours back to no lower than 55%. when he is in blue i make it max 80-85% and no lower than 65%.

So having an 80% humidity is ok?

In my opinion no, not if it is constant :)

What are you using to measure the humidity? If it is spiking in the last few days it is possible that it is defective?

i'm hoping its not going to be constant :( like i said for about a weak it was fine its just been like this the past two days and i don't know how to lower it (so far i've just been taking the lid off for a bit until the level drops).

yea i'm already looking into a new hygrometer just in case, but for now how do i keep the humidity down?

Less water and more ventilation.

What type of enclosure and what kind of hygrometer are you using?

i'm embarrassed to admit it but i'm using a dial one and i'm using a sterolite tub

I second this. Although I am having issues this winter because it has been so dry.

i'm having the opposite problem right now, i live near the coast and i think its a little too humid here right now

Its possible the dial hygrometer has a water bubble against the sensor - they are pretty unreliable to say the least.

digital ones are the way to imo

Keeping the humidity that high from my understanding can cause scale rot. you need to get it down to about 60% on average and only higher when in shed.

Too high a humidity?! Now thats a novel problem ;)

The only way to lower humidity is to raise airflow - drill some holes in the tub???

Yea leave it to me to have a problem keeping humidity DOWN x.x
and i actually have added more holes i think the thing might just be busted because i'll leave the lid off (keeping my BP with me) so it adjusts to the room and even then it says its around 65-70% normally o.o

What kind of sub-straight do you have him on? When I was using only cypress my humidity was around 75-85% so after 2 days of that I took out half the cypress and blended in aspen. My humidity then evened out.

Right now i'm just using newspaper

Have you tried taking the hygrometer out of the tank and left it out in your room to see if it changes at all?

Psyche

Yea it says my room is 70% humid

Gungirl

I would get a second hygrometer and double check but if that is the case a dehumidifier will be the only way to solve your issue.

I just got back from the store, bought a digital one as well as a bigger enclosure, water bowl, a hide she can actually climb on as well as some decorative things :)

How to resolve your issues:

1. Buy a dehumidifier for your room.
2. Drill more holes in the Sterilite.

Anywhere in the 40%-70% humidity is ok, but if you go above that you're flirting with a host of bacterial infections. Any lower and you're looking at dry, flaky skin and really bad sheds.
