He's totally empty there. I learned a long time ago not to handle a Blood that's not empty. You should see them after they eat. They look like they swallowed a freakin' bus :P

Thanks, man. He always looks good - it's dealing with him that can get ugly at times, lol. Another thing I learned about Bloods long ago is that they're *much* easier to deal with during the day. Approaching them at night opens a can of worms that can be...tricky, lol :)

Boomers is absolutely bottomless, lol. She spends most of her time looking like she just swallowed a bus and digesting. Because she can't go as long between meals as the brongs, she doesn't get as many photo ops, but I did just upload a couple of new shots of her to my site last night, so you can always see them there (http://cdnblood.clanteam.com/CDN_Blood/Boomers.html). I even have 2 shots of her mother posted there for ya :)

His back pattern gets more dirty with each moult, but his sides just keep getting more yellow, so I don't mind that his back gets darker 'cause it only makes his sides so much more pronounced.

He was hugging the sides because I had just finished sitting with him for about an hour and he was super chill. When I put him back he just followed the bin nice and went as squat as can be - his 'I'm very crashed' mode :)

They're funny alright. I left Bubbles loose for a couple of days because a feeding was coming-up and he'd be out of commission after that, and this is where Junior chose to park. Do you think he's trying to tell me something? He's tried being *in* that tank and he did NOT like it, so I suppose he thought he'd try hanging-out *on* it, which clearly suited him better than being in it :)

Oh I have! I've been wanting a retic for years! Since I've been keeping again, I've really been doing lots of research on these guys and soak up all the information and experience from other retic keepers like a sponge. They're one animal I want to get as much info on as possible before I actually get him here (I want a male). I know he'll be a challenge and I believe I'm finally ready for it. But I also know I'll probably make some mistakes and learn things from him as well. I honestly look forward to it. :)

To be honest, I wasn't really interested much in bloods until I saw a few of yours. Now I look forward to all your posts about yours. I definitely want one, but later, after I get my 'tic and feel confident enough to move on to bloods. :)

Ugh.. I saw 3 gorgeous ones at the expo today and it took everything I had to walk away without them. I LOVE how they look as babies! I know I am not ready for one though. Maybe someday but for now I will drool over yours. :D

CDN_Blood
04-01-12, 03:12 PM
Now that I'm happy to accommodate, lol. There's a lot to know about a Blood before committing to one, and make no mistake, it's a big commitment if your Blood goes mustang. Most folks have neither the patience nor the desire to deal with a rogue snake, and these things can be *very* moody, so one has to be prepared for that and committed to it fully before taking the plunge. This ain't no Corn Snake ;)

Another thing to consider - You mention that you love how they look as babies, but both P. curtus and P. brongersmai change their looks quite radically as they mature, so if you want an adult Blood that looks similar to what it does as a baby, your best bet would be a Borneo (P. breitensteini).

marvelfreak
04-01-12, 06:50 PM
When they hit adult hood is when they look their best IMO. Nothing sexier than a brick red adult Blood imo.

CDN_Blood
04-01-12, 07:49 PM
I haven't seen very many truly red adults in a long-long time...probably close to 20 years since I've seen really red adults, and back then they were all wild-caught with very strong emphasis on the 'wild' part, lol.

Most adults I've seen in captivity since are orangish (like Blue) or brownish (like Bubbles if you subtract the yellow). I've seen images of some that look really red, but I don't have too much faith that the images are true representations. I know it's very difficult to capture their colour unless they're outside in sunlight.

I've done some research on bloods and have soaked up everything you guys say about their husbandry and temperament. That they're easily spooked so they have to be slowly and gently handled, scooped up and not just picked up. As well as some other info on basic care, tips, and other nuances about them.

They're definitely on my want list, but I have a retic and another boa that I want to get first before I get any other animal. So it's at least a year or more before I even start seriously looking to buy a blood.

Seeing pics of them do tempt me to move them up the want list lol :D

I'm really glad to hear you've been paying attention! While it's good to get stuff like this absorbed, it's also worth noting that they're not all things you need to shield yourself from with a garbage can lid just to change their water.

Some are exceptionally calm (like Caylan's), some are in the middle (like mine) and some exhibit traits from all over the behaviour map within the same day (I have one like this, too), but they can all be very moody. It's a question of how far each individual will go when it's in a mood, and you won't know that until you have it.

Also of note is that it's really only the brongersmai that are so touchy. Curtus tend to be a little more stable and breitensteini are much more steady, so picking the right subspecies for your personality type is important

Interesting my Curtus are not that stable.lol
My male is just as wild as any brongersmai that I have ever seen.
Have to agree it comes down to the individual snake.

Oh I agree that it's about the individual, but very generally speaking the brongs are the most unstable, followed by the curtus'. While breits generally tend to be much less phased by most things, they still have their moods where you can tell their patience for being disturbed is just a sliver above zero.

All of them certainly keep their eyes glued to you, watching *very* intently. On that one point I bet we can all agree, lol
