the reptile shop ive been going to for years he just got in some 4-8 month old baby durmil boa's in and there going for 100 buck on Friday when i go and get one and i held a few of them and there calm very calm i use aspen bedding for all of my snake's i know durmil requires some what more higher humidity. So what would be a better choice? i think aspen bedding molds pretty easily when misted

I use Eco-Earth for most of my boas, but I must confess I don't have a Dumeril's (although I would love to!) Don't take my answer until it has been confirmed or proven incorrect by somebody who actually keeps them.

Reptile bark is what i use for my Dumeril. You'll want to make it deep enough it can burrow. Mine always under the bark with his nose sticking out like Anacondas do when in water. What kind of cage do you have set up? Plastic totes work great they help hold humidity really good. Any other questions just ask.:) P.S. Don't forget pictures when you get one.

I will i still got to upload my other snakes really got no time im away atm in Utah for till Friday I'm not a big fan of tubs they look plain i use lots of 10 and 40 gallons tanks i got a 6 foot tank to sitting around since they don't hold humidity well i may make a custom top for it but i really don't want to use a tub I'm really surprise on how nice and calm the baby s durmil's are

What nice about the Reptile Bark is it can be bleached and reuse. It tells how to do it right on the bag. As for mites i used it for years and have never had any. (knock on wood)

If you absolutely had to house 2 snakes together, one male and one female during breeding season would be the way to do it but that needs to be temporary. Last year, after 6 months of being together, Popeye (9 yr old Dum male) being the relentless breeder that he is finally locked up with Black Betty (9 yr old Dum female). After that, he wanted even more of it but Betty was not having it. She attacked him a few days later by constricting him. Needless to say, those 2 will not get together again. Anyway, right now, because of lack of tub space, Gandalf the Grey (3 yr old Dum male) and Arwen (4 yr old Dum female) are having to share a tub. They seem to be getting along just fine but again, this is only temporary until I can score another rack.

With Dums its a little hard. Breeding season has been going on for a few months already but its not done yet.

Dumeri's can be cannibalistic. Also, they have a tendancy...even when not eating, to EAT their bedding! So weird. They don't require more humidity than other boas, unless shedding of course. I have had my boy, and girl (from two different breeders...btw 100 is a good price and 140 is great for two, though they will probably be siblings. That bothers some people, don't know if you mind though) Anyway, had them for six months now...the male has NEVER eaten. He's pooped once, and shed once, and now he just keeps mostly curled up under a coconut husk, only comes out for water and a quick jaunt around the tank. He hasn't really lost any weight. Both of them like their cool side. The female has shed once, and eaten quite a few times, and has grown....though right now she's on strike.
As far as i've read, and can tell...it's just the time of year. They are both still pretty small (though the female is as long as my shoulder to the tips of my fingers, where as the male is barely from my fingers to my elbow). They just want to chill on the cool side. They are always about 72-78 degrees. Only in the beginning did i see the female go onto the warm side.
They have a slow metabolism for a boa. (So do bolivian boas, which i also have.)
I've seen the female sit in her water dish for a day, before her shed. Now that i think about it, i think she's shed twice actually. (I keep meaning to start an excel document on my snakes but i never seem to lol)
They are both very calm, very nice snakes. I actually would have preferred they be a bit more active and more...i dunno...have a bit more personality.
They both burrow. The female loves to burrow and just have her nose sticking out. They are ambush predators.

You will enjoy him a lot. I prefer Dums over the South American Boas any day.
As far as cages go, you will just need to go with what you prefer. The snake doesnt care if his background is green, brown or purple, full of plants or on newspaper. All of that is YOUR preference.
When you get him post pics. I'd love to see what he looks like.

yea i well post pics my dad is watching my house for me wile I'm gone and keeping a eye on the snake's he wont go no near my coral tho lol and I'm going to use a tub casue he's going to be in my room so hardly no one go in there and not to mention a lil cheaper to

Yeah we use 2 racks... 1 that holds 4 15qt tubs and 4 6qt tubs on 6 shelves and another that holds 4 more 37qt tubs plus a 6' Neodesha enclosure for Black Betty. I think vivs look awesome but that would cost too much money for me to have for 16 snakes so I use racks instead. Like I said in the previous reply, you gotta go with what suits YOU and what YOU prefer.
theapexgerman
01-14-12, 03:06 PM
I'm going to have 6 snake's soon all 5 have viv's but I'm going to try out and see how the tub work for me 16 snake's must be a pain at time's

01-14-12, 03:09 PM
Actually, I enjoy all 16 of them and I pull each one of them out and handle them like the pets that they are. :)

i hold all of mine except my coral he's pretty tame and chill my girl been hinting for me to find a new home for it
exwizard
01-14-12, 03:17 PM
I think thats awesome that you spend time with them. As far as your coral is concerned, I understand. We cant legally keep hots here and I dont want any even if we could.
theapexgerman
01-14-12, 03:24 PM
IN AZ the only law is we cant buy or keep any native species so I'm breaking the law by having my Arizona mountain king snake but to there's like 5 different mountain king snake's and unless your very good you can't tell the difference
exwizard
01-14-12, 03:27 PM
Shhhh... Stay under that radar. ;) We cant keep native species here either, not that I plan on getting any. I think we're maxed to our capacity right now, hence the need for a third rack.

01-14-12, 03:34 PM
yea had him for 2 year's no one ever came by asking to take him lol i happen to be hiking one morning and saw him coming out a hole in the tree stump witch is next to the road so i caught him and kept him Ive seen so many snake's ran over in the road so i uselessly stop and push the snake's out from the road's
exwizard
01-14-12, 04:01 PM

theapexgerman
01-14-12, 04:07 PM
yea i think i did the AZ mountain king is my girl snake she like's that one the best Ive seen some nasty stuff on the road sometimes you cant even tell if it's a snake
exwizard
01-14-12, 04:12 PM
Yeah one thing I don't get here. You can kill garters in the wild here but you cant keep them. That just doesn't make sense to me.
As far as your upcoming Dum is concerned, he will make a nice addition to your collection and you will enjoy him a lot.
theapexgerman
01-14-12, 04:16 PM
yea i can't w8 i got to hold a few of the dum's they was the calmest snake. out of my collection my nelson still jumpy after 3 years but king's/milk's are jumpy tho
exwizard
01-14-12, 04:49 PM
They are calm for sure. All 7 of mine are. Like I said in another post, the temperment is on par with a South American Boa but the pattern is prettier.

i like the way red tails look to but they will get way way to big for me but carpet python look's bad *** that well be my next snake i get most likely

Agreed on all counts except the size thing. I would get a Burm if Laura would allow it. Anyway, as it is, Black Betty is as big as we're going to get. Yes, she's a Dum and yes, she is 9 1/2' and 27 lbs. but Dums dont normally get over 6' maybe 7' for some females. Popeye is our '02 male. He's only 5 1/2' and 10 lbs... more the normal Dum size.
Yes Carpets do look bad*** which is why we got that pair of IJs. Ive always loved Carpets.

well ive seen a redtail bout 7 month's ago it was bout 12 foot long or so i could just see the look on Jessica face my girl she well either faint or kill me im fine with a 6 or 7 foot snake just nothing over 10 or so feet how kuch did you pay for your carpet pythons
