Nero is my German shepherd. He's a schutzhund dog, certified therapy dog, and a service dog in training. He comes to my reptile education shows to help teach kids main differences between mammals and reptiles, and does plenty of other volunteer work. He loves any kind of kid, and loves to assist in therapy and mobility with disabled children. He also works with adults, too. He has over one hundred commands committed to memory. With all of these accomplishments, he is the biggest, dopiest, clumsiest dog I have ever met. He's a year and a half old, and I purchased him at six weeks (still living with the breeder).

Winter is a six and a half year old Malamute/Anatolian shepherd mix. I got her in 2008 from a shelter. I didn't think I wanted another dog at this point (I already had my two minpins and I lived in an apartment). She's my happy accident. I went to a shelter with a friend to help her pick out a new cat. I hear shelter volunteers talk about the sweet dog who had anxiety that was going to be put down if she didn't get adopted by close of business that day. Let's just say she's still here. :) She was severely dog agressive and had horrible seperation anxiety when I brought her home, but we've worked through that. Now she is a great family pet, and hiking partner.

Gunny is a nine year old miniature pinscher. I got her as a three year old while I was living in Japan, and she was recovering from an injury. She's a fighter, but her health is declining. She loves to cuddle and lay under blankets. She hates cold and anything wet. She also doesn't take pictures well.

Cammie is now five and a half. She came to me from a miniature pinscher breeder at the age of two weeks old, because her mom had rejected her. She was hand raised by me, bottle fed, and at night I even diapered her (ridiculous, right?). She doesn't believe she's a dog. She thinks she's entitled to everything, and often vocalizes her discontent with whatever I'm doing when it doesn't involve her. She gives hugs and kisses like a human, too. She doesn't lick, she puckers her lips and puts them on mine. Her and Gunny came back from Japan with me.

Luna is my husband's dog. She's still under a year, and was adopted from a shelter at a Petsmart adoption drive as a young puppy. All we know about her is that her mother was a pit bull. We don't know any history on her father, so I'm pretty sure she's a mix. She looks like she could have some cattle dog/heeler in her. Luna acts more like a cat than a dog.

Beautiful dogs, would love a large dog but not practical for me anymore :( what are the mini pinnys like? Do they have "little dog syndrome" like jack russels do?
Nero's a very handsome boy. I had a black labrador called Nero many years ago, I got him from a rescue centre as he'd been very badly mistreated, he was a wonderful dog and I honestly think if I'd ever met his original owner I'd have been arrested and he'd have wound up in hospital.

If it means anything to you, I don't like little dogs, but I LOVE minpins! Cammie and Gunny are great. All they want to do is be close to you, preferably on your lap. They can be ferocious guard dogs, but are generally mild mannered. The only issue I've ever heard people who keep minpins complain about is that they are very difficult to house break. I litter box trained mine, and have never had a problem. If I haden't done this, I would have a huge problem. They don't go outside in the cold. They don't go outside in the rain. They don't go outside if it's muddy. They don't go outside if it's foggy. They don't go outside at night. Litterboxes are the way to go.

I have to agree with every word of this... I Hate 99% of small dogs. I did however have a minpin and he was the best! I also had to litter box train him due to every thing you said.. lol

Those are amazing dogs! I love big dogs...but in defense of small dogs...I do love my chihuahua. I couldn't stand small dogs until I got him. He can be a little terror but he has character..that's for sure.

My favorite breed of dog is a doberman. I also love German shepherds, pit bulls, Belgian Malenois, Dutch shepherds, rottweilers, etc. I'm TERRIFIED of chihuahuas.

Lol...my chihuahua is a total nut! He went after a mastiff in a pet store once. He thinks he's huge. I love German Shepherds and Labs..I had a black lab and a yellow lab...Kaela, my girl...she died last January...I still miss her so much. I can't have a big dog where I live now...but someday I will have another lab. Here is a pic of my Kaela...may she rest in peace:

Aww, what a sweet girl. I had a yellow lab that I had to put down just before Christmas of '10. Her name was Bailey. When we moved out to our farm, we thought it would be the right thing to do to adopt an elderly dog from a shelter to let her live out the rest of her days.

Both beautiful dogs! That is wonderful that you adopted an elderly dog like that. Kaela had a lapsed esophagus...it was very rough for her in the end. My vet was wonderful though...she came out to our house for house calls and at the end, put her to sleep in our living room.

I agree, we have a vet around us who will come to do the same thing. I think having it done this way is so much easier and you as the owner and the pet.
Definitely think it is something more vets should offer.

I'm not a big dog person. Shasta was my english pit and she ruined me when it came to dogs. She never barked, never jumped on you without permission first, deadly protective of me, when she growled it was because she didn't like the person coming near me and she only gave 2 warning growls before she would stand between me and whoever, then she would bare her teeth and prepare to lunge, if they didn't take the hint (usually with me telling them to get away ASAP *always friends of my parents and one inparticular that she did NOT like*) she would lunge.
Maybe after we buy a home I will get a pair of dogs (can never get just 1 pack animal, they must have companionship) but I think it will be a retired military or police dog. I do not have the patience required to train a dog, which is why I don't have any and haven't had any since I was 16.
My neighbor has a german shepard that I would enjoy shooting. She barks at everything, leaves falling, birds flying over, the wind....Literally. I hate that dog -all because of her barking. I can't even go in my backyard without her barking and I feed and love on them when Sandy goes out of town! She knows me!! Bleh...I don't like the things that make dogs dogs. :(
My long time friend Donna has a police trained german shepard named Oden. He is HUGE, almost 200 pounds, solid muscle, and is taller than I am (5'3"). I LOVE THAT DOG. Oden is the coolest and well behaved. He is trained for sign language and I love that!! If I got a dog, it would have to be one trained like he is. (I love big dogs.)

I love all these pup pics!! I love dogs, big and small :D I don't have a dog (yet!) but I'm like a dog-magnet. Dogs come to me wherever I am. I also help rehabilitate fighting dogs into loving pets. I've trained all of my family and friends' dogs too. I just love dogs!

The bottom two dogs look like the street dogs on Okinawa! I loved feeding them.
Zaradozia, what you were discribing about that German shepherd is not what makes a dog a dog. That is the perfect example of what happens when you put a working dog in a situation without a job. They make their own jobs. It could be eating shoes, eating furniture, herding children, or barking at anything that moves. It's really sad. I am currently rehabing another German shepherd (Wulfric) that came from a similar situation. Previous owner just left him in his back yard, and he became extremely OCD. He's sick mentally, physically, and is just a mess in every way possible. The plan is to get him physically healthy again (he's been sick off and on for a year) before he can start medication for his OCD. Once medication begins, we can fast track his training, give him a real job (he hopefully will become a therapy dog and a herding dog), and once we build his concentration through training, wean him off the medication and get him into a real home.
On the other hand, Nero the example of what a German shepherd should be. He has a job. Heck, he has three jobs. He knows both spoken commands, sign language commands, and situational commands (example, if he's working with a disabled person and they drop something, he automatically picks it up and brings it to them without any commands).

I don't know, you could be right. Carly is just a strange dog, it's like she has more energy than her body can contain.
They have free roam of the yard and can go inside at any time. Sandy has two other dogs, Zeus german shepard and Ben (I can't remember what Ben is, large dog, stands 6ft on hind legs) both are well behaved.
I love Zues, he just a laid back easy going dog and as long as I give him a good scratch he is the happiest thing on earth. All of them are well cared for and given lots of attention when everyone comes home from work. They sleep in Sandy's bedroom and never left outside over night. If they were I think I would strangle my darling Sandy. lol
Sandy is in the process of setting up Doggy training for Carly, hoping that will get her under control. Carly refuses to listen and I don't understand because Ben and Zues are both trained by Sandy and behave perfectly.
Sandy is a foster parent for animals in need and trust me, she spends $$$$ on their care. She does not take in dogs/puppies anymore, just kittens now. They run the dogs out back (we have a forest and ravine behind our houses) and take them for walks/jogs. We are hoping that Carly grows out of it as she gets older. She is still a puppy, just a year or two old.
I do believe a lot of it is that Carly requires constant attention and being left to her own devices for 9 hours a day is making her bored. She is extremely hyper, worse than an ankle biter.
I do not fault Sandy, she gave Carly a loving home so she wouldn't be put down (humane society adoptee), and buys nothing but the healthiest food for them. Hell, I spend 100.00 a month on cat food just for 4 cats, I would not want her food bill, 5 cats, 3 dogs and 4 fosters at any given time.

Great looking dogs. I particularly like Nero, I've always loved GSDs. Our oldest (13-15, not entirely sure he was a rescue) is half Lab and half GSD. He's the most dutiful dog I've ever had. Thanks once again for sharing. :)

Tell her to get Carly a backpack! It does wonders for dogs in need of a job. Pack it full of treats, water, and poop bags, and she's ready for a long hike!
Thanks, Norm.
