Welcome! I've never seen a snake like that one so I'm no help. A better picture might help. it's sure got a pretty pattern though.

I have to 3rd the idea that picking up a snake before you know what species is it is unwise. It's not just for your own safety that you know what it is *first*, but for the safety of anyone around you, especially if you bring the thing home. Thing like that give those of us who are responsible a bad reputation, so I suggest you pick-up some literature that will help you identify the snakes in your area *before* you get yourself into a situation, and when you do see them and can identify them, please-please-please leave them where you find them. It's where they belong.

I agree with everyone above me that it's not a good idea to pick up a snake you're not familiar with.

That being said, I think you found a pine snake. Not sure where in the US you are, but it looks a lot like my Florida pine snake.

That's what the snake you picked up reminded me of. You might've picked up a different locality. It's hard to tell if we don't know where you picked it up.

Looks like a Goins king snake to me. Not venomous, the only non viper in the US is the coral snake and they are tricolored.
Pattern on the head gives it away.

Also there's venomous snakes, not poisonous. Venom is injected, poison is ingested.

edit: although, it depends on if you just picked it up off the ground or bought it from a breeder because goins kings aren't native to America.

The only indigenous snake in Indiana that remotely resembles the one in the pic is a Fox Snake. The snake in the pic looks to be a morph based on the markings. Much clearer pics are needed of it's face and belly.

He is not necessarily from IN. That's just me seeing if I happen to know him.
Also looking at the head its snout is pretty rounded. I don't know how true it is but I was always told that most venomous snakes have a wedge or triangular shaped head. Kinda looks like a rat snake's head to me but I honestly have a hard time distinguishing most colubrids! Its a real looker though.
