And lastly this is my Indonesian tree boa. I know she isn't a Corallus, but she's still a tree boa and I don't want to start a new thread just for one snake. She has no name.

I really really do. I started looking into the garden's, and had one in my hands at the last reptile show, but just didn't feel prepared yet.
Haha, how many people say that nowadays??
I need to look into them again : )
I'm not much of a boa girl, but the ATBs just have that special awesome something!
So tell me...i saw you posted which one was super evil...which one is the nicest? lol Does that term even get used for ATBs? lol

Noodles (the light garden) and Sand Dollar are my nicest ATBs. The most mellow arboreal I have is the Indonesian tree boa.
Thanks, Aja.

Yeah but how mellow is mellow? Like ball python mellow or like, carpet python on a good day mellow? (ie: only striking a little lol)
BarelyBreathing
05-29-12, 09:37 PM
The indo has never hissed, struck, or puffed up. Think ball python mellow but more active. The two Amazons would be closer to tame carpet python mellow, some days never striking, others strking once or twice. They don't do a lot of threatening, though. They either strike or they don't, there is no hissing or puffing. Once you start working with these guys you will learn to read their body language. They hold themselves differently when they are thinking about biting. But there are other times where they're just cruising up your arm and seem to go "oh, an arm, I wonder if I can eat it".

lol awesome. The one I held at the show was pretty sweet actually, and I kind of regret not getting it.
I know I read my carpet python very well. I can always tell with her.
I was curious about these guys though, because I have not been around them much. Thank you!
My impression was that they are bite crazy, but that's just the clutter you always hear. I know better *lol*

Some are, some aren't. I have a few that will strike at their own shadows.

I think a lot of keepers (including myself) will only mention the bad to discourage new people who have little to no snake experience from getting one.

Jaleely, you're already keeping a semi arboreal snake if you have a carpet and I have yet to meet a puppy dog tame carpet. Did you know a Carpet will perch like a GTP if you provide it a perch. Just a little tid bit of info, as far as ATB's go, they're like any other snake, you have to work with them and be selective, handle them prior to buying, I have 2 that are pretty mello, 1 that I can just reach in and pick up (the rest of my collection requires hooking first) and then I have one that is an A$$ with teeth...but I bought her knowing that, she was just too pretty not to get. I'm still working with her but I can touch her in the enclosure...lol just not out of it, it's her comfort zone so she doesn't like being out of it.

I have a thread on my carpet (Silver :) and there are photos of her somewhere where's she's on branches in her enclosure. I mix them up every now and then and she loves to explore it.
She is actually very tollerant of me. Strikes at my husband every time, though hehehe
I'm the only one who can reach in and pick her up. We actually did buy a hook just for her though! For the hubby of course ;)
It's not just that they're arboreal, I just love the look of them. ATBs are really beautiful snakes! My *actual* problem, besides being a little wary of getting something as fussy as my carpet has been (it's taken at least 9months or more? to get here where she doesn't bite me all the time) that I can't decide which type of ATB I like the best. I can't even pick a favorite from BBs collection...I would love to have them all!

I've never met an adult carpet who WASN'T puppy dog tame, lol.
Jaleely, if I ever unload my collection, you get first pick. Not that that will happen.

I don't know how I missed this thread. They're absolutely gorgeous! I've thought about getting an ATB off and on, but can never truly decide if I want one or not lol.

Thanks, Rogue. And yes, you want one.

05-31-12, 10:16 AM
Yes you absolutely want one, Jaleely, so do you. A piece of advice, try and remember what scent you have on your hands when you reach in and have a "handling" session without incident, you're not getting bit because she has associated you and your scent as a non-threat, I am the only one at our house that can hold the ATB's minus my butt with teeth female, nobody can hold her, which drives me insane since she's so dang pretty...lol I will have 2 litters of ATB's this fall and if either of you want to try your hand at ATB's you let me know and I'll part with some gardens for next to nothing and you pay shipping. If you don't like it, send it back and I will pick up shipping...that is of course if you don't get one before then lol.

I usually wash my hands with watered down dish soap (because we're cheap and don't buy hand soap *lol*) before handling.
However......and i thought you were teasing me for a second Dale...lol
There was the recent time i fed my garters and then didn't get the fish smell off of my hands completely...and then held my hognose. That thread has a life of it's own!
(So I'm not ever used to handling fish! And perhaps watered down dish soap was not the best to get rid of that smell! LOL)
Anyway...BB I'm holding you do that! I doubt you ever will though. You strike me as a forever owner ; )

Indeed I am. I've had to give away my frogs, though, because my house was too hot for them. And my husband had sold/traded some of his snakes. But mine are forever.
