View Full Version : Second snake
Ok guys, so less than a month after purchasing Princess (What else you gonna call a baby female royal ?) I'm thinking its time to look into getting another snake.
I would like a different species, hots (are you mad ?) are out, as is anything over six feet. Corns are a possibility. Though I like some of the boa pics Iv'e seen here.
So suggestions, advice, do's and dont's and helpful remarks will be most welcome.
The actual purchase wont be for a while yet, but it wont do any harm to start window shopping and diong some research just now.
Cheers

There are soooo many snakes to name. Why don't you tell us more of what you want in the snake. Do you want to be able to handle it often or are you ok with a "show" snake ( look but not touch) ? Do you want something really colorful ? What do you like about the snake the most? I tend to decide if I like a snake or not by the shape of it's head right off the bat. Just some more things to help us help you.

I would go with a corn. Below is a corn I used to have. I paid $60 for her. She was an '05 breeder, very friendly, awesome eater and an overall great snake.

BRB and Rosie boa both make sweet pets and are easy to care for. Male BRB hardly ever get over 5 feet. Rosie Boas top out around 4 feet.
Spotted python or Children Pythons top out around 4 to 5 feet. The both make great pets to.

Something that will put up with being handled, some of the green boa's (sorry I can't be more specific. HEY I'm a noob lol) look stunning and one of the things I love about Princess is the shape of her head and slender neck.
Hope this helps ;-)

i say something along the lines of a nelson milk's I've seen a lot of nelsons and there very calm snakes get OK size and hardy eaters and plus the albinos aren't that pricy either. or go for a corn there be the best bet
I like the look of the BRB :-)

Green tree pythons are awesome snakes. As long as you don't want a snake that you can handle. I have one and I love him to bits but they are showcase snakes not lap snakes.I have had mine for almost a year and have yet to hold him at all.

Thanks Kat. I'm a very tactile person and I love the way a snake feels moving in my hand so the GTP maybe not for me. Been lookig at pics of the BRB and thats a poss :-)

only snake i hold out of my collection is my nelson my bull snake mean very mean of course i don't handle my coral snake either =D reason i don't like to handle snakes is because getting a bite hurts and i could imagine a tree python having a big head would hurt like hell

As Kat said, GTPs aren't exactly the most handle-able of snakes, especially when babies. If you want something like that get a carpet.
And definitely not so humble opinion there, I'm the first one to admit I'm rather opinionated and stand by my opinion.

Yes, in general. Irian Jaya carpets get just a bit longer than Royals but less girthy. Jungle carpets get a bit longer and Coastals get bigger yet. Not sure about the other 'carpets' like bredli or diamonds. Shaun could tell you more about that.
If you like boa constrictors, males stay smaller than the females and some of the locality specific boas like Hogg Islands stay smaller even than normal. I'm fairly sure a male Hogg would stay near the 6' mark.
I love Brazilian rainbows but from what I've read they tend towards secrecy and I'm not sure how much handling they take. Can't beat the look of them though.
I have to be honest here and jump in on the colubrid vs. boids debate as firmly on the side of boids. There are a few colubrids I'm interested in (anery motley corn and western hognose) but I'm much more into the boas & pythons in general. I seem to like a snake with a neck, what can I say?
Oh, and raise your hand if you knew that Swany would be posting about a new snake. Hands up everyone. ;) Sorry. hehehehe

I would personally go with a columbian boa(bci in general) Or a hogg island boa. My Boas are eating machines! Very easy to handle and my male is 3 years old and under five feet.
Another option you have that makes me so jealous is Shaun ( no I am not saying to take him home with you). You are what a half hour from his place? Go check out his carpets and see what you think. Maybe you can get a youngin from him if his produce.

Yeah Im very near Shaun (I'd need a BIG viv for himlol) was reading some stuff bout carpets earlier and they probably get a bit bigger than I'd be comfy with at the moment

Yes I understand the size thing but like Shaun said in another thread they are slow growers. How will you feel in 5 years about a 7ft snake? His won't be hatching for another four months ( I think). Still if nothing else it would be a great day just swing his collection in person.
p.s. Shaun's viv wouldn't need to be that big. He is only 5'3"
Thats the thing with small scotsmen, you,ve GOT to give them a LOT of space ;-)
Aye your right about maybe feeling different in a few years, but I'd rather be sure beforehand

I didn't read the entire thread but my $.02 is that you will definately be ok with a snake over 5 ft if a) you get the right breed and b) you buy it small and grow along with it.
I would get a male of whatever you choose to keep the size down and I have found our males to be slightly more docile than our females.
2 snakes we have that I would be comfortable handing to a kid are our male red tail boa and our male jungle carpet python. Both have great temperments and are about 5.5 ft long. Kid safe means adult safe and although our boa will continue to grow I have no fear of him at all.
SO my vote is for one of the above based on the fact we have them .

But whatever you choose I would not set my size limit at 5ft. Some of the best snakes out there are just a bit bigger than that .

I say go for Brazilian Rainbow Boa. I may be a wee biased, considering i do own one, but mine is just a joy to have. Mine is just a great big pussycat, and he is actually quite visible. Actually, as i'm typing this, he is out of his hide. I've had no problems keeping his humidity at the proper levels, and BRB'S are just gorgeous all around!

Personally I would go for another BP. I really like the normals, but there are tons of morphs to. The best of the morphs to me are the pie balls or albinos :D
Thats my thoughts tho

head shape is the very first thing i judge a snake on
followed by colour
then pattern
behavoirs also very important,i want an active snake,i don't care about handling,as i only do it when neccesary
i preffer to observe and study my snakes
size don't really come into it,if it interests me,then i'll keep that species
cheers shaun

go with an irian jaya carpet python which would be around 6 feet maybe a little more at the most. jungle carpets can get even bigger, carpet pythons are really great pet snakes they are very hardy, eat well and they dont hide all the time like some snakes, they are more active and they look sweet!! plus everyone has corn snakes......

I LOVE boas, but having a snake that could top out at 8'-9' was not terribly appealing (especially to the wife! ;)), sooooo... How about a dwarf locality boa? I settled on the Hog Island because they have a great reputation for being calm, docile snakes, have beautiful hypomelanistic coloring, and they typically remain under 6'. The key here is to make sure you're getting a pure locality boa, and not a cross. Just make sure there are some reputable breeders in your area, and you will end up with a wonderful, beautiful and manageable animal. Best of luck!
