LOL, I have ben trying to find prevent a mite here for a while.

We may just have to use NIX in the great white north!!

From what I understand, the Nix, RID, and Equate (Wal-Mart brand) lice bedding sprays all have exactly the same active ingredient as PAM (0.5% permethrin, very important!!!!). If you follow the directions for use of any of them, you should be fine. Good luck!

For some reason I feel as though my reptile shop carries it. If so the next time I go I will stock up and get in touch with you guys to work out a way to send some over.

I will definately take you up on that offer. If you can get ahold of it and ship it, that would be great!! Nix is good too, but more work since you have to mix a batch when needed, whereas the PAM you just spray and your done!!

i have succesfully used nix on all my snakes and you can store it once the 4l is mixed, it has to be kept out of the light though or the active ingredient is broken down, i havent been able to find any PAM here in BC

How much you think shipping would cost to send yourway?

Snakefood
01-02-12, 08:51 PM
depends, canada post goes by either weight or dimensions, whichever is the MOST expensive!! I would have to price out other carriers like UPS, DHL or greyhound. To do so I would need the weight and the dimensions of the package it would be sent in.

is it legal in canada? lots of drugs in the states we cant got out here, vise versa.. look into it before you buy imho. oh and you cand buy anything to do with mites in pets shops, bylaws....

Snakefood

well if it's available in Toronto then it should be ok. It's just us westerners' that are having a problem. And if it's just pyrethrins, then there are LOTS of products sold here in BC containing that!!

could be, but laws are crazy how crazy they can be, your in langle, did you know its illegal to sell puppies or kittens in pets stores just in richmond? cant sell iguana and other lizards in burnaby, but 5 min or less out, and into vancouver its legal? but then again for the $ it costs, if it didnt pass customs, not to big a loss.

Yes, I knoew that. Actually the SPCA, along with some of the bigger rescues are trying to make it illegal to sell puppies/kittens in ANY petstore in BC. And I totally support the movement. I have a reason too!!

I have worked in the animal care industry since I was 15 (looong time ago!!) and I worked in petstores. One where I worked got a litter of rottie pups in and split them between 2 stores, mine and Richmond. I walked into work one morning and smelled a smell I had never wanted to smell again, the smell of PARVO (a deadly virus to a pup if not treated immediately) I called my boss and he said I didn't know what I was talking about and to deworm them as that must be the cause of the diahrea. I knew I was right because my dog had contracted Parvo as a pup, and even getting him into the vet immediately they only gave a 10% chance of surviving (he lived). Parvo has a very unique smell to it, very metallic and there is no other reason for that smell to be there except that the dog has parvo. I ended up having to quit on the spot and go call the SPCA, who came in and took the pups (9 out of 12 died) and shut the store down until they could prove they had removed (cleaned) the virus out.

Most pet stores (especially chain stores) don't care about the health of the animals, just the profit. Plus, those dogs don't get out of their cages to walk or run, which is cruel.

Let's leave pup sales to breeders and rescue org's and use the stores to buy thier food, treats and toys!!

So back to the provent a mite. :)
Got some. Mites returned for me so seeing as to go to the hockey tournament in Alliston I had to go through Toronto I figure I would get some PAM from the only store I know of that sells it. Gonna use it this week on everything but in fact only 2 snakes are affected (of course treat all enclosures). BUT .... It was $45 with tax which is insane. Still I have to try it. I know why it is not for sale in Canada. Look at the pic. You figure it out. Hint. Look at the lable.

not that it CAN'T be sold in Canada, just that its an American product and shipping to Canada is expensive.

edit: and sucks

It has to do with our pesticide laws. and other things.

PCPC, Reptilla and many other mom and pop shops can get or carry it.

even ask your local chain. if they deal with national reptile supply they should be able to get it for you.

None of the above. Chemicals in it are available in different products sold here now. The main thing that makes the can I bought not legal.... No french lable. All products in Canada must have a bylingual lable and this does not. Other than that I can not figure out why it isn't at every reptile store in Canada. Crazy !!!
