View Full Version : First shed
Ok so Princess eyes have gone blue, just noticed this today, can some one tell me how long her shed will take, and apart from spraying her viv and moving her water dish nearer to her heat source to raise the humidity, is there anything else i need to do ? We only got her last week and apart from what Iv'e read here, as a new owner I'm not sure what I should be doing.
Cheers

For my BPs it's also about a week
She's due a feed tomorrow, going by what Iv'e read most go off there food when shedding, so do I try to feed or just leave her till next week ?

IMHO I would not try to feed. Chances are she will refuse, then you may have to discard/waste a food item.
I noticed Andi my BRB was in shed last week and didn't eat. She still hasn't shed, so I think I may skip today's feeding for her as well.

I'd leave it, it does them no harm to wait. My corn is due to shed in the next day or so, then he can have his feed he was due a week ago lol.

It's really a per snake situation. Some snakes eat during shed others don't. I feed on schedule regardless of shed, most times Sasha eats, sometimes she doesn't. If she doesn't, I feed her on schedule on the next date.
Basically, it's your call, I would offer and see what happens.

I'm the same as Zaradozia I offer regardless and usually they will take if they are just starting to shed rather then towards the end of the cycle. As for shed time it really all depends on the snake itself my youngest BP sheds in 6-7 days and my oldest at 8 years sheds in about 8-10 days.

5 to 10 days AFTER her eyes go back to looking normal mate
you'll love seeing it when it happens mate;)
re feeding
its up to you swany, some snakes eat during the shedding proccess, others won't
worse case scenario, you waste a prey item if she knocks you back mate
cheers shaun
Dont know if its my imagination, but her skin seems duller than it was last week, I know this happens with our beardie just before he sheds

My Bp normally will eat wherever it is in the shed cycle, but having other snakes to feed the prey item too makes it less of a worry that it wont eat :)

My BPs usually eat in shed; so personally I'd try feeding

I don't offer my BP or my GTP food during shed but my corn and boa get fed. I know the BP and GTP will not eat.

I'm hoping I see her Shaun, I'll disturb her as little as possible, apart from offering her a meal tomorrow and changing her water I'll leave her alone

Must be BP shedding time. One of ours just cleared after being in blue and another went lue today. I've never seen a shed but I really hope to soon.
In regards to feeding in shed, I feed many snakes in shed, but many I know won't eat so I don't bother. However if it looks like the snake may shed the day after I feed, I may refrain. I have had rosy boas and a ball python unable to get their past their meal lump, and if I don't tear it down the middle, it's stuck until the meal gets digested, or it cuts off circulation..... Thought it might be worth mentioning. ~Caylan.s.~

I fed my jcp two days before he shed this last time, the rat he ate was so big that the old skin ripped as he swallowed which left him having a very bad shed as he couldnt peel it off in one piece properly.

I usually give mine a quick mist with a water bottle, it helps moisten the skin & gets a one piece shed. then you can unroll the shed, hang it to dry & frame it as first babies first shed.:D

since mine live in tubs, I spray them once a day all the time.
then during shed time, I spray them twice a day.
never had any problems getting good sheds
& keeps their skin soft all the time.

Also, a tuperware bowl big enough for him to crawl into with the lid cut for a large whole and filled with water will help the shed if he needs it. Sasha actually used hers this past shed (much to my amazement!)
Dull skin - Shaun nailed it when he said it's the dead skin about to slough off.

Her water bowls big enough for her to into comfortably if she needs a "swim". Aye our beardie's skin does th same just before a shed

I am in the same spot , Dave's eyes went blue last week , and yesterday I noticed they are much clearer . His skin is much darker now too . I have been misting everything in his viv ,including him 5 to 6 times a day . I did try feeding him on friday which is his feeding day. He would just grab the prey ,hold it for a minute and spit it out. So I will wait and see. This is a first shed for us as we have never had snakes before so not sure what to expect . But from what I am reading ,Dave is right on the mark for a good healthy shed . I have also noticed Dave is spending a lot more time in his hide the last few days too . I changed the substrate on one half of his viv under his hide to a moss mat so I can keep a moist hide for him as well. He seems to like it .

I just went to mist Dave and there was 3 large pieces of shed under his hide. the largest was from his face and head including both eye caps . Now he has figured out if he moves around his space he can rub against stuff to help remove the skin . I expect he should be done in a day or so .
Quick update. Her eyes cleared on Teusday and she fed Teus night ( woo hoo) She's been in her cool hide since and barely moved, no sign of she'd yet.
My money is on skin on Sunday :)
Hell I'm a betting man a and i've got a 10 spot says its monday:)
Is betting allowed here Wayne ? Lol

Dave shed 2 days ago now. It was almost a completely clean shed, all except for a small piece on his neck about an inch behind his head. I am figureing on a soak in luke warm water, but if anyone has any other suggestions that may work better I am open.
Spooky we both lost. She's just came out and my baby's first shed is over :-)

always check that the eye caps are on the shed
also always check the tip of the tail for any retained shed mate
retained shed on the tip of the tail can cause blood restriction and the tip of the tail dies
i bought a carpet hatchling with 4mm to 5mm of a stump on its tail,as the previous owner had left shed on the tail
it always worth checking mate;)
glad your wee princess got the job done all on her own for you mate
cheers shaun

Cheers shaun. I'm well chuffed. I'll check her tail next time she pops out of her hide, dont know if ill be able to check for the eye caps, as she shed in her hide and when I lifted out out it was all squashed together.

get it a little wet you should be able to carefully unravel it :)
