Today the time finally came when we had to make the heartbreaking decision to rehome our two lizards. both their bulbs blew simultaneously and money has been tight for a few months now. :(
Thankfully our local reptile shop (that i love!) has taken them and will sell them on our behalf for a small % of the sale price, in the meantime they are absorbing the cost of housing/feeding etc.
It does give us the opportunity to upgrade our GTP and JCP into 4x2x2 vivs as they are both getting to the point of us considering moving them anyway - will also leave us with a double arboreal setup that we can sell to see off the debt collectors for a couple more months :)

Sorry it had to happen but I hope they sell fast and you can make a profit off the viv. Good luck my friend.

i know how you feel rob
the other night i put my 2 irians together (male and female) ,so i could turn the power off,on 1 of my tanks (electric bills are killing us)
i might end up selling everything and keeping only my diamonds,as they only require heat 4 hours per day and feeding 6 months of the year
that and the fact that diamond pythons are my favorite snake of all time
i am really sorry to hear you had to move your lizards on,i know how much you dotted on them mate
i hope things get better in the new year for you
all the best shaun

imo, theres NOTHING to be critical about (your honesty is refreshing mate )
no one should ever be critical,of some one doing the RIGHT thing rob
its what any responsible head of a family and reptile keeper would do,when placed in your situation, that being your doing whats best for all concerned.
it's bound to have been a tough and horrible decision to make
i know it's getting really tough for me,now i'm down to snakes, i NEVER want/wanted to part with,or at least until i use/used them in the breeding projects,i originally aquired them for.but it's getting real hard to justify, the money going out on electricity bills at the minute rob,its soul destroying having to cut down the collection, for something as crappy as an electric bill.yet this is where i find myself (frustrating times, this whole countrys heading for the crapper )
cheers shaun
Your doing the right thing Rob. Got to take care of your family, and you are giving you reptiles a great chance to end up in a nice home as you have given them.
Sorry to hear shaun that you as well have to get rid of some of your collection.

If someone was critical towards you for this, they would be hearing (reading) some harsh words from me...
I can tell you and many others on this website have great passion for the animals you keep. For someone to be critical towards you in a time like this would be unacceptable. Best of luck to you Rob.

Thanks again to everyone. I handed over my roach colony to the shop too in return they are going to provide free food to my remaining snakes for the next two months so that is one thing i dont have to worry about over xmas and the january lull.
Going forward we have worked out the feeding the snakes is going to cost £25 a month which is well within our budget needs so hopefully we will be able to keep the snakes for the foreseeable future - when we get to April two of our biggest debts will be paid off (assuming we manage the next three months of payments) and we will be around £200 a month better off.
This will help pay off the remaining debt a lot quicker and get us back to a level footing financially by 2013 (fingers crossed!!).
My advice to anyone that has a similar situation to us (going from full time work to living on statew benefit) is to get in touch with debt counsellors/financial planners STRAIGHTAWAY. We made the mistake of continuing with our previous lifestyle and it was never going to be sustainable - we have lost £40k a year in income because of me not working. We have ended up in a hole that was totally unnecessary, but hindsight is a wonderful thing!!! :) :)

Rob and Shaun my heart goes out to both of you. I was in the same boat years ago and to sell off all my snake just to keep my lights on and pay rent. I wish you both well and hope things turn around for you.

Life throws curves at us all at times and there's nothing we can do except what we feel is the best at that particular time. I think you made the right decision regarding what was best for the animals during this spell, and when it gets you down thinking about it, look back at all the great times you did have with them and it'll put a smile back on your face, we hope :)
Sorry to read this Rob :(

That sucks Rob, really sorry to hear you had to give them up. That is pretty great that you have a local that will sell them on consignment for you. I didnt think there were anything but big ugly chain stores in your neck of the woods anymore. Is that an independent place?

thanks chuck and jimi
i just applied for a job in Liberia operating 100 ton plus dumptrucks
its 7 weeks away 2 weeks home, but the money is a life changing amount,so imo will be worth any risk involved
you are picked up by armed escort from the airport, you live in a guarded compound 24/7 and get escorted to your machines
so it shouldn't be too bad (needs must)

It is an independant place, they sold me the lizards originally (and all my snakes and all my vivs) and are a fantastic shop. The owner refuses to sell anything bar cornsnakes to people that he doesnt know, he has banned sells to new customers in December (so no Xmas pets) also.
THey spend most of their day chatting to customers and offering advice and guidance than they do selling! If you have a non-eating reptile they dont charge to take them in and get them feeding, they do reptile boarding for holiday coverage, the owner keeps multiple hots, breeds king cobras, was at one point the main breeder of GTP's in the UK and every reptile in the building is treated as a pet rather than a stock item - they are pretty much everything that you could want in a reptile shop!

Will do - but first we need to strip everything that was in those enclosures for the lizards, bleach/sterilise all the decor, transfer the CHE's fron the snakes current vivs, redecorate the new vivs with a mixture of the stuff from the lizards vivs and the stuff from their current vivs - and its Xmas!!! We also aren't in any hurry!! :)

do you know any of the company names mate ?
its open cast mining i do
i think the australians call it open pan mining
instead of going underground you dig a huge hole, take the minerals then fill it back up and leave the place as you found it looks wise
will definatly check canada out
your advice is much appreciated mate

The oil sands here in Alberta work that way. I'll look into company's doing this and give you name after I get a shower after a days work.
I know shell is one
Suncor is another major one

Maybe a bit less pay mate... but no civil wars and all the carpets you can get your hands on (including the stuff dreams are made of on your side of the pond like albino M. s. variegata and M. carinata).

Had to get some feeders for the snakes today so visitied the reptile shop - i asked about our lizards and it looks like the Frilly is sold :) :( there is a reserve on her so as soon as the guy has his set up ready she will be gone.
No interest so far in the Ackie (tho the shop staff love him!!)
That must have been hard Rob. Try to think of it as it will be better off in a home rather than a temp pet store enclosure. I feel for you and this situation :(
