Not a scientific study at all:
Garter snakes (In captivity) do seem to be more active when there is things to do in the cage.
However, Since it it widely believed that snakes in general cannot form a complex thought process at all anyways, One would be led to believe that they cannot become bored.
In order to become "bored" the snake would need to feel as if it were missing out on something...

I've noticed my lizard definitely gets bored (scratches on the glass and runs around a lot) but I don't really think my snakes do.
They are solitary animals so I wouldn't think they get bored.
Then again my snakes are nocturnal and the lizard is diurnal so I see what the lizard does but not usually what the snakes do cause I'm asleep.

After almost a quarter century of cohabitation with snakes, I'd would personally say Yes, yes they do. But then again, that could just be the meds talkin'...it's not like I've ever heard one *say* they're bored :D

haha good point. I know Kaybe enjoys coming out and exploring and sitting on my lap, but when he's in his cage I don't think he's actively thinking "ugh, I'm soooo bored" :p I think they live more in a moment-to-moment sort of way

sometimes i see my carpet python pressing up against the front of the cage, and if i open it he goes right up my arm. it's apparent that sometimes he wants out weather he's "bored" or not

I think it's more of a case of them not wanting to be contained or confined to the space they are in...I can tell that my snakes want to escape...they would probably rather be out exploring...but I don't think they are bored.

That implies they are aware that they're "missing out on something" which as stated earlier by infernalis would propose that they're somewhat "bored" in the cage.
it's really how you define bored though

Marriam-Webster Dictionary defines boredom as: the state of being weary and restless through lack of interest. Maybe the are bored! (at least if that's the definition we use)

Like I said in my post, garter snakes are always "curious" about what is happening outside their cage, they watch me all day through the glass, the climb, swim, and are highly active and alert.
That's why I keep them, they may not be bored, but they certainly are not BORING.
A snake that sits in it's hide all day may as well be a rubber decoration that eats and poops as far as I'm concerned.
Most of my corn snakes just sit around, but I have one that does everything you just said garters do.

My Grey Banded King actively explores his enclosure, moving between his hide and his climbing branch. My Ball python is also quite active, and visible, right now he is curled up underneath his platform.
My Sand Boas, on the other hand, are a different story, most of the time i only see their little shovel noses peaking out of the aspen, lol
