I know that pine is bad for snakes. I have read that they end up having respiratory problems from it and can lead to death. However how do the snakes need contact to get the negative reaction? Is it by contact only? The reason I ask is that I just got a real tree for the holidays and I am wondering if the snake could have any adverse effects from being in the same room and having the pine scent in the air.

Don't worry about it.

The tree would have to be in the enclosure for any problems to arise.

oh good. On that note, what if I built the frame for an enclosure out of pine and then lined the inside with laminate tiling so that the snake couldn't come in contact with the frame. Just an idea for a lightweight enclosure for when she out grows this one.

Pine boards are kiln dried, all the oils (turpines) are burned out in the kiln.

And a FYI - pine bedding is shredded lumber. (No turpines in it either)

The dangerous oils are havested to manufactur heptane and turpentine.

The only pine that poses any risk is if you milled the trees yourself.

I still wouldn't risk using pine bedding, just in case.
But that's just me.

Neither would I, But I had to throw the accurate info out there.

Well that is some very useful information. Puts my mind at ease quite abit. I am still not going to use pine bedding but I no longer have any reservations about building out of pine for a frame. That will help for money and weight.

That's actually a good question. Good to know that snakes and christmas trees can be in the same room :)

From what I hear, pine is pretty commonly used as a substrate for ball pythons and its all good.

it may be commonly used, that doesn't mean its the best thing to use.

Can't stress it enough, Simple Chemistry 101, Pine animal bedding is a by product of the lumber industry, It is shredded kiln dried wood.

All Terpenes have been extracted at the lumber plant and used in the manufacture of Turpentine, Pine bedding poses no risk to animals whatsoever from inhalation of the now non existing "oils" They have been burned off and extracted at the mill.
