So I don't know why but small things fascinate me. I am wanting to purchase a small snake that will stay small. Not because I don't have the room, simply because I like small things. Does anyone have any suggestions perhaps something they have kept that was small? I was considering a rough green but I heard they were sometimes difficult to convince to eat.

Perhaps a rosy boa? An eastern hognose? Kenyan sand boa?

I'm kinda partial to the Kenyan Sand Boas myself, lol. The males, when adults, reach a max size between 18-20 inches, and the females rarely getting bigger than 2 feet, though there have been a few 30 inchers that i've seen.
These are a few of mine......:)

I was looking for small snakes once and was told African house snakes stayed around 2 feet.

I have a Kenyan Sand boa ^-^. He is adorable although a picky eater. He seemed to eat much better when I switched substrates after being told by many people that what I had was fine and what I wanted to switch to was pointless.
Thank you for the Storeria Dekayi suggestion. I was considering them, there is also this little black snake that looks like a leech that I was thinking about. I am hesitant to have some thing shipped for many reasons.

Ring necks are sexy, I've never owned a baby but they are fun to play with as adults.

Red bellieds are small. Extremely rare in the pet trade though.

House snakes are great if you can keep them contained. That's the challenge with a lot of small colubrids. They also eat like there's no tomorrow, lol.
If you are more a boid type, Calabar Pythons and Rosy Boas would be your best bet.
It's really a question of taste and the amount of time you have to spend tending the animal. Boids don't take as much time as colubrids, but it's really individual taste that dictates the final decision :)

I have an issue with my neighbors. They have sticky fingers and I would hate to think what they would do if they realized the box contained something living. Also I live in the mountins and I have had issues with boxes actually finding their way to my door even with next day. Its not so much the shipping just the arrival.
I didn't know ring necks were so tiny! Thank you every one for the suggestions I am looking into a few of them and trying to determine how far I am willing to drive or if I can trust anyone with a shipment.

Well that is another story then. I would be concerned as well. Maybe have it shipped to your work or the house of a family member you can trust?

That ring neck is so adorable I might see if I can bribe my boss. Yes, one of the lovely neighbors was caught trying to get onto one of my horses. I went outside with a bat and kindly informed him that I had a right to defend my property and planned to exercised said right. Furthermore my mare is worth over 3k and therefore I could press charges for grand larceny. I moved her and my gelding a week later.

I second this motion. Buy a heavy caliber. Nothing worse than shooting an animal and watching it try to crawl into the brush.
This is an interesting thread. I like the tiny ones too. LOL.
I tease my wife all the time when she says something is cute I ask 'why, because it's small?'. hehehe
And yes, it's important for the neighbors to have a good healthy fear of you. Especially if you live out in the boonies.

OMG! I wanted a bmg so bad when I lived in the states. I almost bought one in Tennessee but decided against it. Imagine coyote hunting with that!

You can email the company and have them ship to the nearest FedEx or UPS or whatever and you can pick it up from there. I had to do that because they couldn't ship to my house.

You could have them deliver to your nearest post office and pick up there instead. :)

Shotguns are intimidating too, big barrels and lots of noise.
a 12 Gage pump fired into the air sends neighbours running FAST.
and that sound of the pump action, cha-chink.. that's intimidating too.
Just make sure you look deadly serious, and don't tremble, they need to think you mean it.

^this, for home defense, nothing speaks louder than a shotgun.
well... maybe a fully auto assault rifle, but those are illegal...

The mindset down there is different, my neighbors know if they piss me off they won't be invited to the BBQ, rofl.
That being said I've needed to kick the crap out of a few people who wouldn't stop.... much more fun to do it by hand.

Terrible idea to shoot someone of a horse using a shotgun.
its an even worse Idea to use a shotgun or any long gun for home defense.

I love how this turned into a gun talk. I am well known for being that crazy Yankee Italian B**** down the street. Just the same it would be ahrd to prove who did it since there are a lot of scum bags. If I didn't see it happen... I'll find someone to let me deliver it that ring neck is just too darn pretty to not figure somethign out for.

I've never found a ringneck in the wild, they always find me rofl. I've had a few "following" me in the trails, and I've had a few literally crawl up my leg while I was eating. Really curious lil guys.

For the first scenario the further the target the further the shot spreads apart. The horse would NOT be happy. For the second scenario try using a 3 ft stick like a gun. Then try going through the door way. Now bring the barrel on target ( do you see how much you have to move the stick?) Secondly what if he is against the wall and you lead with you gun in the ready position? He has atleast a 2 foot notice before you come through the door. He can grab the barrel and keep it pointed away from him or take your weapon. Or he could just as easily stay close enough to you that the gun is ineffective and stab you. Now you have to chose to drop the gun or try to get away from him to make your gun effective. With a pistol he can be 6 inches from you and you can still have it shoved in his gut. Also for home defense shotguns spray too much lead.

I owned an African housesnake once. She was 5 feet long. I know that there are all different locales for African house snakes and that some are smaller than others, but my experience wouldn't lead me to consider them a small snake. An amazing snake? Yes:)!

Lucky duck! Apparently they are extreamly common in Kansas. Trying to find a good breeder or reputible field caught one. Only site I found so far was out of stock.
