So if you built in in 12 hrs and set it up...how did you seal all the wood?

What type of sealer did you put on the wood to prevent mold or rot?

millertime89
11-29-11, 01:15 PM
it was probably pre-treated.

Gungirl

it was probably pre-treated.

Even if it was pre-treated it should have sealer on all the joints. Caulking or something. That takes time to cure.

OP- I think it looks great and I'm not looking to start anything I just was wondering what you used that cured in that time line. Or how you did it

I don't think he has one yet.
He built this because he's getting one soon

I like the cage. Great job on it. Curious though, is it ok for the bulbs to be exposed like that?

Yes, its actually recommended for them to be exposed like that. If, for some reason, the monitor goes to grab at the hot bulb, because it is just hanging by the cord it will just swing away from it. Also, because there is no housing around the bulb, there is nothing for the monitor to grab onto. Putting a hood around it gives something for the monitor to grab and climb up onto, thus allowing it to potentially get hurt.

What kind of wood is it made of?

Not treated wood will end in rot and mold really fast.

Going to have to agree. Might be something you want to take care of before your sav gets settled in then have to be removed and changed around in 6 months time.

yes, i agree. you need to treat that wood, some plywood uses poisons in the glue, as well as pine and other trypes of wood are not good for reptile. as well as the fact that cage with rot very fast....many reason why its a nessesity. the heat will stimulate the mold growth, your soil needs to be moist all the time so you could imagine how fast that nice cage you build becomes a death trap. Now that I am looking at the picture again... it looks like pine plywood. I hope its not but either way it needs to be sealed asap

Folks, Pine lumber is kiln dried, all oils are burned off in the kiln.... I can't stress that enough.

Only GREEN raw pine is a danger.

Not to argue with you Wayne but even kiln dried pine can be dangerous if swung with enough force.

that's the best kind. I pride myself on being one. A professor once called me a smart arse with talent in front of the entire class. Sometimes I think I should've stuck with Architecture...

I realize that. I should have clarified that my concern was more that It looked like pine plywood. In which case it is not safe due to the glues and other products added to it in the process of making it into plywood.

please learn from me take everything out and treat the wood. i made a cage for my sav last year and we had to take it a part because we was about to move and thank god we did because the bottom of the cage was all molded and was about to mess up the carpet under it.i think you will save so much money just taking everything out and treating it.Now i have a new cage for him and the first thing we did was treat it and seal all the edges.

This is exactly why Chompers new room will not only be sealed, but will also have sheets of aluminum secured to the floor.

awesome that may actually be doable when i move!

Go to any scrap yard, they will sell you aluminum for the price of scrap.

I got several sheets of Aluminum from a public bathroom wall once for really cheap just by asking.

Scrapped out road signs are perfect, and some of them are really big too.

Some highway sign panels are 4 foot by 8 foot!! same dimensions as a sheet of plywood.

From a sheet metal supply house, this panel would be hundreds of dollars to buy, a scrap road sign about $20

Well unfortunately I fall into the dumb category more oft then not.....but occasionally I have these moments that make me look like I know what I am doing..... then I open my mouth and that myth is busted to pieces.....

Oh yeah the cage looks good. When is the little beastie. Coming home?
