I have a yearling jungle/coastal mix (my avatar) named Silver (for her bright silver eyes, that are very stunning in person). She is just ALWAYS hot/warm. She sits on her UTH all the time, only sometimes coming out and crawling around. I've had her for about six months now. It was hot and summer when i got her, and she did the same thing. She's the one that a while ago, as soon as it turned cold weather, she scared me by getting a little bit of a RI. She's totally fine now (the only way i could get a snake who is always above 90 degrees to get warmer, was to put a heat lamp over her also...which she LOVED).
Anyone else's carpet python like it hot? I mean she is almost hot to the touch sometimes. Well not that extreme, but she's a lot hotter than I would think would be comfortable for her. She curles up and sits there on the heater. I just think it's weird that 24/7 she is at least 90 degrees or warmer!
Anyone else?
edit: I just posted in the boas about my dumeril's always liking the cold. The hognoses, balls, and my bolivian boa all spend a normal amount of time warming up, or cooling down.

Hmm, now that I think about it, all three of my carpets sit right up as close as they can to the heat.. and always come out warm to the touch to.. I always thought it was kind of pleasant .. (seeing as I've got cold hands.. I really have to try to warm them up before I handle my snakes) :P

Your hotspots in the enclosure are also farther away from the cold world, and next to their climbing spots... makes sense that even if the heat was in the front they would stay where its safest and their escape rout.

Yea but even when they aren't climbing they all always lie at the back, where as Alba (Albino Ball) regulates between both.

ah ha! i just wondered if it was a carpet thing. seems like it is! I love holding her when she's warm, i just worried for a long time that she was SO warm all the time. I'm a worry-wart though :)

Better to be safe than sorry right :P
It's a small sample size but my jungle carpet seems to prefer the warm side too.

kayla, what type of heat are you using
heat mats only give you ground heat, imo this is why your carpets are always on them.they are drawing heat from the bottom up.heat mats do not heat up the air by much, its ground temps only with this heating method
re hot and cool ends
imo a snake should ALWAYS use BOTH sides of its tank, not stick to one side 24/7.imo you must let the snake tell you what adjustments should be made in order for it to thermoregulate correctly.that said there are times when a snake will stay at one end longer than usual, like when its just ate or going through the shedding proccess
re ceramic set ups
i use non light emmiting ceramic bulbs, with a stat and bulb guard.this saves me having to change over the heat source every night, from light emmiting to non light emmitting
i've found ceramics give very good consistant accurate ambient air temperatures and a basking spot.
this allows you to watch the snake and fine tune the temps,to the individual snakes needs,so he can then use the whole tank to thermoregulate.
re always up the hot end
if he's up his hot end 24/7 then up the temperature 2 degrees per week.do this until he starts going down the cool end to thermoregulate and cool down
re always up the cool end
if he's up his cold end 24/7 then do the oposite of the above.drop your temperatures by 2 degrees per week, until he starts to go up the hot end to thermoregulate and warm up
i always use care sheet temps as a guide and a starting point regards temperatures for my carpets.i then let the snake tell me if its correct or needing adjusted
cheers shaun

We use back heat flexwatt, rigged up to a thermostat.

have had the ceramic lamps. She get RIGHT up next to them. I actually have a really good range in her tank, that she ignores. so to save a little energy we look the lamp out. she just acts the same *lol*
my one dumeril LOVES her pipes, and just likes sticking out both ends. she's given up on any heat or cold regulation lately and opted for playing sneaky snake

never had any carpet that spent most of its time basking TBH.
I would suggest that the rest of the enclosure is prob too cold
I think I finally have my enclosure figured out. The snake has been all over the cage since my last rearrangement of lights. I think I had exactly what blade blaster is talking about going on. Right now the head and one coil at up near the basking lamp with the tail and a couple coils over in the cool side using my PVC perch.
