2011 Normal Superdwarf, male, didn't take him home today, just bought him. He'll come home in a month or so. Not sure what to name him yet.
The one on the bottom is mine, he's next to a platinum just for comparison.

I wasn't planning on buying one, but his pattern was so awesome and his coloring was unique enough that it didn't take much convincing for Travis to get me to agree to buy him.

Nice snakes!! Will he stay that dark or will he lighten up/ darken with age?

stephanbakir
11-20-11, 09:41 PM
Hes a stunner man, almost motley in the back and granite back/gc in the front. Even normals can look pretty spectacular! good find!

Gungirl

Wow I really like how dark he is.. hope he stays that way!

millertime89
11-21-11, 12:31 AM
I really hope he stays as dark as he is. I wasn't planning on getting a normal, but he was just too good to pass up. Travis thought about keeping him but decided he didn't need any more normals, he hasn't been to a single show, almost a hold-back.

stephanbakir
11-21-11, 12:42 AM
Really is a pretty normal, quick question though, is he P-het anything?? :P Would be interesting if he was phet, looks almost like a visual g-back in the front.

millertime89
11-21-11, 01:12 AM
I don't thinks so, at least Travis doesn't or didn't say anything. He mentioned it looks like it might be, but he doesn't think so.

Really nice looking snake. How big do the super dwarfs get on average?

exwizard
11-21-11, 08:13 AM
Im jealous. SDs are great because you get all the benefits of a retic in a much smaller package. Congratulations

Lankyrob
11-21-11, 08:50 AM
Sd's should get about 8ft max depending on the locale - great snake by the way!!!

stephanbakir
11-21-11, 08:57 AM
That one is a male, so normally 6 feet. Females avg 8.

Small should not be confused with weak, a full grown SD can overpower most people.

Lankyrob
11-21-11, 10:06 AM
My guy regularly leave bruising on my arms just from holding on calmly - if he actually constricted then i would have no chance of getting him off and he is only aroung 18mth to 2 yr old and barely 5 foot.

stephanbakir
11-21-11, 10:14 AM
They are impressive animals. they generally look almost anery too which is cool (the normal sds)

jarich
11-21-11, 11:57 AM
Very cool. Ya, Ive heard they are ridiculously strong.

millertime89
11-21-11, 12:17 PM
yeah, was holding a young adult and I was surprised by just how much power was behind that snake, really impressive. I've held a few full grown boas and carpets and they just didn't seem to have the power that that superdwarf had.
Rob, Travis told me that most of his SDs go through a "terrible 2s" phase where they just push to see how much they can get away with around that age, your guy might be going through something similar.
Jarich, if you want an SD, the prices are very reasonable for such a cool snake and there are some great breeders out there. If I were you I would wait until Spring to make a buy though as winter shipping can be tricky. Harry Wessels and Travis Kubes are probably the two I would go through, otherwise if you're close to NERD (no idea how close you are) you might go check them out too.

Little bugger escaped from his tub at the breeder's two weeks ago, still no sign of him. I'm really hopping he turns up. If he does I get him for free and my money will be put towards another morph of my choosing.

KORBIN5895
12-26-11, 09:15 AM
And what if he doesn't turn up? Also is this guy a reliable breeder? I am just asking because if seems odd that a reputable breeder wouldn't have his stock in an escape proof room. I mean accidents do happen so why not protect your livelihood?

If he doesn't turn up then my money will just go towards a future larger purchase. The room is escape proof, but its a rather large room with tons of room for the snake to hide. He's a very reputable breeder and well respected in the retic community. Travis Kubes is his name, look him up, he's been very straightforward with me through this little mess and told me the day after it happened (he was hoping it would turn up quickly which obviously didn't happen).

millertime89
01-14-12, 06:09 PM
Travis still hasn't found him, but I picked this little girl up from another breeder earlier today. She was really flighty when I got her home and only managed to snag the one picture before I decided to put her in her tub and give her a chance to calm down.

Kyle - not saying that this is a guaranteed fix but when my guy does that pose (unless it is feeding time or the couple days after obviously!! :)) i clench my fist and put it up against his nose, he seems ot realise its me then and will relax and i can then pick him up with no issues at all.

millertime89
01-22-12, 02:19 AM
I didn't want to bother her as she's only been here a week. That said, she took dinner tonight like a champ! First strike she missed but second was spot on, she actually burst the rat!

alessia55
01-22-12, 08:04 AM
SO cute. Look at those orange eyes!! :o Remind me how big she is now and how big she'll get in the future??

millertime89
01-22-12, 01:29 PM
haven't measured her, but I would guess about 32", maybe a bit less, she's decently long. She should top out between 7 and 8 feet, I'm kinda hoping she hits 8. I've got her first mate picked out already for a very unique project that I've discussed with Stephan. I'm hoping this ban BS holds out until he hatches.

exwizard
01-22-12, 02:42 PM
You should go ahead with your project anyway, because retics are not on that list. As long as you dont go into Iowa with them you should be ok. Once again, hes a really nice looking SD.

millertime89
01-23-12, 01:51 AM
it'll affect this project, I don't want to say anymore until I'm about ready for it, or I at least have what I need.

millertime89
01-23-12, 01:55 AM
oh, and 32 was a good guess, she ran herself along the entire side of her tub and when measured it came out to be about 30 inches, so 32 would be about right.

edit: yes, she's active a day after eating already, gonna have to start giving her at least 2 fuzzies to leave a lump for 48 hours.

Norm66

We got out SD at about 3foot long and he was already taking weaner rats or larger - i would think triple the girth of the snake would be about right size personally :)

I *LOVE* those eyes! I suggest more and more pics *nod nod*!
Great pic on the snake!

My carpet will "bump" me sometimes when she is fussy, and doesn't want to be bothered. I just reach in and pick her up *lol* (hey, sometimes i need to get in there, and she just needs to deal with it!)
I find that if i hover, or hesitate, that's when a bite happens. Hubby is very jumpy and can't pick her up. She'll be calm and fine, and if he goes in there for some reason he just hesitates and she gets real fussy and strikes at him, Coils up like that and rears back.
I got him a snake hook *lmao*

millertime89
01-24-12, 02:57 PM
She's never struck at me, yet...
I'll see if I can take more pictures tonight. Last night when I got home she had buried herself in the substrate so I didn't bother her, but she was out and about this morning. She uses her entire viv, I might bump her up to the larger one and give her all the room she can use and more.

I think she might be starting to dull down prior to shed. She was supper active until a few days ago and I'm noticing that she's definitely duller in the pics than she was when she came home. She's also been hiding more lately. Here's hoping she'll be sporting some new skin sometime soon!

This has got to be the weirdest thing I've ever heard of. She's being the problem feeder tonight. Offered her the fuzzy rat and she struck like expected, coiled up, and just ignored it. Ok, so I offered her the fuzzy mouse that I need to get rid of and she struck, dropped the rat, coiled up, and looked like she was gonna down it, but nope, dropped it. Well she was definitely still in feed mode (I was doing video tonight) and she kept striking at anything with a heat source. She's never struck at me before but I suppose it could be defensive, but I don't think so. Well I put her hide back in on top of her, offered the rat again, she took it, and I put the lid on her tub and draped my new USARK t-shirt over to hopefully give her the privacy she's seeking. I'm gonna check on her one more time before bed and again in the morning, hopefully she eats, if not, oh well. Already got one mouse going in the trash.

Yeah millertime, I sometimes have to shut the day lamp off because at my burm's former owners place she had a red heat lamp as a light source and that was it...most of the time though she prefers eating in the dark and no audience...the first time she did this it freaked me out...same deal as yours, struck, coiled, killed...then just went back to her corner and hide...turned the light off...40 minutes later the rat was gone...weird to me

millertime89
02-06-12, 12:55 PM
the weirdest thing is she ate normally the first time she ate with me. Took it and ate it faster than my BRB and he's fast eater.

BurmeseGuy
02-06-12, 04:18 PM
Yeah when I first got mine she ate just fine...not fast but fine...then all of a sudden she won't eat with the lights on...idk had me baffled and my RTB he eats just fine and very fast, 10 mins and he's killed and swallowed...back to the hide...he don't mess around...

Would you want to be out in the open with the lights on and no way of defending yourself because you have a mouth full of rat? :)

millertime89
02-22-12, 11:34 PM
I dunno what her problem was tonight but she was having NO handling. I took out her tub and popped the top and she was chilling on top of her rock like she always is and I stuck my hand down so she could smell me before I picked her up. I picked her up and she immediately tried backinto into a corner and started striking at me, I've got a couple small cuts that aren't worth taking a picture of from her. I picked her up like you're supposed to to show them that no matter how much biting they do its not going to get them out of handling time and that's when I got peed on. She continued stressing out and I decided it was better to leave her be than continue to stress her out.

2 theories as to why:
1) the dog was in my room before I started taking the snakes out but was kicked out so it could have still smelled like him in there. But he was kicked out something like an hour before she came out so I'm not sure.
2) I was taking pictures of her and the flash might have been bothering her. My room doesn't have the best lighting so flash is the only way to get pictures of them.

I would say the flash, I (accidently) used flash once, and refuse to use it otherwise, and my snake didnt look to happy. To them its probably like a lightning strike or something and they just freak out and go into "must hide" mode.

As for the dog leaving an hour before, I guarantee you that it still smelled like dog to the snake, Im really sensitive to cat smell (dunno why) and i can tell if a cat has been in a room for days (my brother brought his cat over my parents place and one got in the basement for an hour and i smelled it for almost a week it drove me nuts)

I'm doubting the dog though as he's in my room with some regularity and I know its smelled like him when she's been out before. My gut says flash. Worthless room lighting...

Snakes do have bad days.... I've seen it in a few of them now. Especially the ones that seem more intelligent like the carpets, retics, burms and bloods. Just leave them be, they'll come around usually. For me I noticed its usually I approached the snake wrong, forgetting it isn't a ball python... They can be as "tame" as can be and still instincts kick in pretty good. When I'm at work and this happens and I have to deal with it, I let them bite, pick them up anyways, and put them in a holding bin. Usually when I go to get them back out they're just fine again... little idjits..

Edit:
Wow nice pics, I love the eyes!! That's a nice dark retic, haven't seen many with that colouration exactly, makes the eyes really glow!

The thing is, I approached her like I normally do, set the tub on the bed, pop the top, stick my hand in front of her for a cursory sniff, then pick her up. The only difference this time is that in between popping the top and letting her sniff my hand I took pictures.
She has some great coloration, I suspect retics, like BRBs, have a day/night color shift. When I take her out during the day she's got way more yellow to her, and in the evenings it darkens and she almost turns red like in that first picture. The photos don't do her justice because she definitely looks more red than those last 2 pictures show.

I don;t know about SD retics, but I've read Retics in general are very intelligent, and not always forgiving. The camera may have bothered him so he just wanted to be left to himself after that. I can't say. I do think he'll come around and be his normal self again next time you try, but maybe give him the night to himself. Wish I had more experience with retics, really wish I could keep one for that matter...
I see the reds you're talking about now, I think thats what I like about him. The contrast of that makes him seem really dark for some reason. Would love to see some of his yellow shots, I'm a sucker for yellow. Regardless, those eyes are a reason enough to take more pics lol. But perhaps not for a little bit, incase thats what bothered him. Good luck!

Her and Doc would make beautiful babies mate!!!

She is gorgeous!!!

Re the camera, i use flash with all my pics and my SD doesnt seem overly bothered (obviously all snakes are different tho). He does however have days when i think about handling himn and his whole attitude is "leave me alone" so i just leave him and try anther day. As others have said i think retics are pretty good at letting us know when THEY are up for being out and about :)

I'm waiting to see what he hatches. I'm hoping to get up there as soon as he has a clutch of 75% or 88.5% SD platinums hatch and I'll see what I can do for ya Norm.

Thanks for the compliments everyone, she is hands down my favorite snake in my collection.

That's cool man, thanks. I'm not 100% sure yet but I'm getting ready to make a reptile "closet" that will open me up to being able to have a few more snakes.

millertime89

nah, she doesn't squeeze all that hard, the only time she squeezed hard enough that she might have been able to leave a bruise she was on my hand and not my arm.

I was looking through some of the old pictures, I can't believe how much she's changed in just a few months.
Here she is a week after she came home, she had more red in her then.
http://www.1320video.com/img/album351/IMG_1067.sized.jpg

here she is now, and she actually has more yellow than this, she almost looks like a sun-sibling or something crazy, she just keeps getting more and more yellow.
