Some of you might know, but I work at petsmart. (yes, career change, and yes, starting over from min wage *lol*). Okay, so who keeps telling stupid people that corn snakes live off of crickets?? I had another post where i told of some stupid lady that insisted her corn snake could live off crickets and worms...since then i've corrected another dumb girl who didn't have one, but assumed they did eat bugs...and then today there was some dumb guy who came in, all excited to get a corn snake. I said Suuure we can show you one! I began telling him a little about snakes, and then said "Now you know they only eat mice, right? Rodents." And he freaked out.

Uhm, really? It's a snake, dude. what did you expect?? And it's not like there's a boom of rough green snakes or something around that makes people think that snakes in general eat bugs...i am half shocked the dummies don't just come in expecting to feed the snakes CORN.

Okay so he flipped out and was like "oh, oh no! they're so cute but that's horrible, i couldn't feed it mice! don't they eat crickets? someone told me they eat bugs!" and i'm like, Well SURE i guess the CAN eat a bug...but they'll DIE from malnutrition and if they don't die right away they'll grow and become malformed from lack of calcium!
I totally let this guy have the all-knowing-you-are-stupid-gambit.

He looked at the snake, then ran off somewhere to go spread his stupid somewhere else.

The thing is...what is even MORE annoying is the guy that was showing him the snake, probably would have sold him that snake if i hadn't put the fear of mice into him. What is with so much stupidity? Don't people care? And in this day in age, how would can you possibly go out to get a pet without looking it up online first????? Really???

On a side note, they have a nice black and white axanthic corn there that i want. lol geez i feel like i have to save them all!

I have a couple days off. Have talked with someone else on here about contacting petsmart headquarters to discuss a few things with them. Selling pets to stupid people is going on the list.

There is definately a lot of bad info that goes around. Unfortunately when people have no base knowledge or interest in the animals then they will believe whatever is told them.

I see at least 9 incidents of the words dumb and stupid in this post....

Just because some people are misinformed, lack herp experience or knowledge of a snakes diet does not quite make them stupid.

All I know is if I had a PHD and never owned a corn snake, calling me "stupid" is not going to make me listen. I wonder if Bill Gates knows what Corn snakes eat??

Positive energy is contagious... try it.

Oh I'm just venting frustration, infernales. I actually enjoy telling people about animals. It just seems like after a while though there seems to be an soo many people who just get animals and have no real desire to know how to take care of them properly. To me not knowing is not stupid...so that was unfair of Mr to say...but not caring, and still doing is..well I guess I mentioned that word enough :) its frustrating to see irrisponcibility when it comes to animals. We put them in cages & domestic environments and then just get rid of them when it doesn't suit us, as if there is no sense of responcibility.
Case in point: lady comes in and says she's going to "show" her dog who's boss because it has outragious behavior. It keeps peeing on the floor unexpectedly..she wont stand having an animals with a mind of its own...turns out the puppy is barely 10 weeks old.
It may be a little bit unpositive for me to call names, but the exasperated childishness does make me feel better sometimes :) I get your point though lol

I can tell you are frustrated... I just hope you are not radiating that same negative energy at the store. ;)

Old saying goes "you attract more flies with sugar than vinegar"

Think of it like this. There is a plain vanilla person who radiates positive energy, like that bubbly girl who is always smiling. On the other hand is the super model who is always bitter, he/she radiates bile and anger.

Who would you rather spend the day with?

I googled "corn snakes eat crickets" to see if I could find ANY confirmation that there was somewhere out there that said it was a good idea. The best I found was on anapsid.org that said that WILD baby corn snakes may eat a few invertebrates to hold them over but will find mice to feed on as soon as possible.

Also, working at a pet store is possibly the most frustrating job out there. I have a really good rapport with the women who work at my local Petco but I have to constantly remind them to mist some of the reptile cages to get the humidity up, etc. At least you get to be there and do it yourself

I'm so glad this is a thread...
My friend lost her brand new baby corn (with in 24 hours of getting it. x.x I told her those pencil eraser sized holes WERE something to worry about...) and asked for my help in finding it.. I told her to thaw some mice while I was on my way. When I got there she had the 'bottle traps' set up with crickets... Like wtf. No matter what I said she was perrsitant, because she was told, her snake would not eat a pinkie yet. x.x -sigh- Needless to say she never found the fellow.

This is exactly why I spent a couple of months reading about corn snakes before I got my set-up.
