What are your snakes doing RIGHT NOW?
Go on, snap a picture right now of what your snake is doing. Don't disrupt them, don't pose them, just take a photo of them through the screen of their tank/enclosure and lets see what they're up to...

Alice is still being Alice.. Exploring wonderland in her mind, without actually being there :P (if you get what I mean?)
Gremlin is digesting a nice big medium rat.. that's not going to be fun to clean up once he's done...
Alba.. is doing her share of playing hid and seek with me.. LMAO
Little Foot, to this day, is still trying to find a way out of his enclosure.. it's pretty cute when he climbs the wall though.. for a water snake he does well at climbing :P

I think I have the only boa that hates aspen. I just cleaned her tank (disinfected with vinegar and water solution) and I put her on aspen for the first time in her life and she just goes back and forth on top of her hides and water dish so she doesn't touch it. Right now she has stuffed herself into a corner up against the glass so that again she doesn't have to touch anything
Gungirl
02-02-12, 01:00 PM
Lol In time I am sure she won't be bothered by it. Wash she on paper towels before? When I changed my GTP from paper towel to a mix of aspen and cypress he wouldn't let it touch him at all. Took about 2 weeks and now he will come off his perch and burrow in it once in a while.

Haha when I do that with Stubbs he loves to hang out on top of the screen and look at me. Or else he desperately tries to go explore the room, which I let him do now. Last time he went on one of his explore missions I picked him up and put him on my shoulder and he proceeded to empty his bowels all over me!
Currently, Stubbs is on his tree chilling surveying his territory. Noodle is still working on shedding, haven't seen much of him the past week.

All mine are comfy in clean tubs. Two got new homes so they're checking them out. :D My big burm is in a baaaaaaaad mood. She's in shed and for once didn't eat (odd for her...she always eats!) and definitely didn't want to be picked up for her tub to be cleaned. Thought for a minute she was going to try to eat my face  I really hate messing with her in shed as it's the only time she's really grumpy and she makes it really difficult to pick her up.
How big is your burm Rogue ?

How big is your burm Rogue ?
My big girl, Ms Grumpy, She-Who-Will-(usually)-Eat-Anything-Anytime-Anywhere is about 8 months old now and close to 5ft. She's on medium rats. Her clutch mate, She-Who-Will-NOT-Take-A-Rat, my problem feeder, is a little shorter and thinner, but is now slowly starting to grow at a decent rate. She refuses rats and I've tried every suggestion in the book and then some. The only way I've ever been able to get her to eat a rat is to piggy back it behind the largest mice I can find or a chick...and she loves her some chicks! My friend just brought me a few rabbit pinks to try her on. If I can get her to take rabbits, my eating issues with her should be solved. Let's keep our fingers crossed as I'm going to offer her one later tonight (I've been feeding her about every 5 days instead of 7 in attempt to get her to the size she should be since she started eating better).
Ah so she's still just a youngster then. As you know I'm new to this, but I really cant see me ever wanting to keep a BIG snake :-)
Rogue628

Ah so she's still just a youngster then. As you know I'm new to this, but I really cant see me ever wanting to keep a BIG snake :-)
My first burm was already 5ft (and now I realize he was power fed) when I adopted him. Even at that size he really really sweet and laid back, although I admit I was intimidated by his size. He loved going outside and playing in the grass :) Even my mom, who was seriously afraid of snakes, loved to take him outside for his daily activity when it was pretty outside. The only time he ever showed aggression was when he was in feed mode. He was scary at that point. Other than that, he was a complete baby lol
Now that I have these girls, I realized I probably would have done better with my old burm if I had gotten him as a hatchling. Watching them grow as quickly as they do is really amazing but still gives you time to learn your animal. As long as your husbandry is good, you give them plenty of interaction (I'm a firm believer in interacting frequently with the ones I know are going to be big....it does help keep them calm and handleable) and a set feeding schedule (their feed mode can be pretty extreme), they are the gentle giants of the snake world. That's not saying accidents can't happened and you won't get tagged, but the more interaction you give them, the more they learn you're safe and the more you learn how to read them. But that's pretty much a given with any animal, even 4-legged furry ones.
Aye getting them small would help, but knowing it's gonna hit 12/15ft or more would prevent me from getting one. True what you say about dogs too, I love dogs. But I wouldn't get something I wasn't comfortable with like say an Akita or an American Pitbull. Now before anyone rags me, I know they're not natural born killers, but the potential IS there to do a lot of damage.

Ahh....you don't know the breed then. APB's are that way for a reason. They're loyal to their masters to the death. They'd kill themselves if they knew it would please their owners. Add this to how massive and strong these guys can be and that's how they get a bad rep, just like alot of reptiles. I <3 APB's and look forward to getting another one (had one when I was married...the smartest, most stubborn pup I've ever had). When I was a vet tech years ago, I never had a bad interaction with one. The dogs that do put my on my toes are all ankle biters and rots. Rarely did I have a good interaction with small breeds and I can only recall one rot that didn't try to bite my head off. Instead, he rather sit in my lap and squish me to death lol
No Rogue I know how deadly APB's can be, what I mean is that it doesn't automatically follow that it wuold turn on me or the family, I just wouldn't take a chance on something with the potential to do so much damage.

Understandable. I'm the same with rotties.
Such an adorable picture, Alessia! :D
Rotties I really don't have a problem with. Lorraine's friend has one and I'll happily roll about the floor with her. (the dog not lorraine's friend lol) The only dog I have a real problem with is the English bull terrier, I find because of the shape of their face I just can't read them.

More dog bites occur from Siberian Huskies and Chihuahuas than pit bulls. The thing is, most of them go unreported because they're "family dogs".
Doesn't surprise me in the least BB, but if a Chihuahua bites me chances are I'm not giong to lose my arm lol

Thank you guys. Rita was actually a Christmas present year before last and she gets brighter with each shed.
Well, i looked in today to see if Genghis had shed, and by the looks of it, he's going to very soon!
He was moving around his cage bumping into things trying to find food (he should have eaten yesterday, i was waiting for him to shed)
So i picked him up, he didnt really care, just sat there (i figured he would try to run away, in which i wouldnt try to feed him, but he didnt care)
Look how blue he is!

needless to say, i plopping him into his little feeding tub (he usually eats in his cage, but i put it in there and I dont think he noticed the mouse..)
As soon as i plopped him in, i saw him smelling arond (blind as a bat probably!) and bam!
(no flash, didn't want to bother him while actually eating, so Its a bit yellow)

Haha it does look like that in those pics, doesn't it? :p It's actually a mix of both. There just happens to be more aspen in that one spot. I mix them because the ReptiBark helps with keeping humidity up, and the aspen is easier for Kaybe to burrow through which he loves doing. When I had aspen only the humidity was too low, but when I had ReptiBark alone, Kaybe (for whatever reason) wouldn't burrow. With a mix, it's a win-win situation. It's also what he's been used to for the past 2yrs, and Kaybe hates change  At home in Miami I have the new Boaphile cages set up waiting for them, and they'll both have only ReptiBark. We'll see how he likes it :p

ugh i'd like to do that for my ball python (Spot is fine on just aspen) but I feed in their encloses, and I feed soaking wet prey. I wouldn't want my ball ingesting any of that reptibark - the humidity would be nice for him though :(

I feed my prey completely soaking wet too. Just offer it on a plate inside the enclosure. ;) That way no substrate is ingested, and you can reap the humidity benefits of ReptiBark!

It looks like my Royal Python is about to leave me a nice, big deposit, even though i cleaned his enclosure earlier, lol

My snakes aren't doing much as of right now, but earlier Dennis (sunglow BCI) fell asleep with half of his body erect against the wall of his enclosure and ssssllloooowwwllllyyy started falling backwards. It was pretty funny. He woke up and looked rather annoyed (if snakes can look annoyed). Lol.

How do you know when they're sleeping?

Their pupils will look almost non-existent.

If you could capture a photo of that and post it next to one showing how his eyes look normally I would greatly appreciate it, all of mine sleep in their hides/substrate so I can never see it.

:O
So when they crawl in your sleeve and stop moving, are they usually sleeping or resting?

hit 10?
When Penelope goes into my sleeve, she won't move even if I move and feels relaxed (as in she's not stiff)

she just feels safe there.
Posts here have to be 10 characters long, so when I want to post something short I (and many others) have to find a way to hit that limit.

Got it! It's super annoying haha. I usually end up doing like 7 exclamation points and then I feel like an idiot lol.
So if I handle her enough, is she gonna feel safer in my sleeve vs someone else's sleeve?

That would be my guess. Your scent is "familiar" to her and as such not one that she feels threatened by. My SD retic girl decided my shirt was a comfortable place yesterday, first time it happened, she found a comfy spot while I was sitting in the chair and she didn't leave until I made her.

Penelope will curl up on my belly sometimes or stretch along my side under my shirt when I'm sitting/laying in bed. I actually fell asleep with her like that twice already o.O...
She didn't even attempt to escape, thank godness, but I forbade myself from going anywhere near my bed with her when I'm tired...
chillin' in their new hides :P

Yeah, I can try to take pictures of sleeping snake pupils vs. awake snake pupils. Dennis doesn't care where he sleeps (as proven by him falling asleep on the wall).

Apex got banned? Even after 2000 posts, I saw that coming.
Anyway there isn't nearly enough lighting to show some of Spot's greens, but I didn't want to open the door and disturb him:

Cleo was just enjoying a post shed drink a little while ago. I took a quick peek at her, just to make sure all her shed was off, and i must have witnessed a full blown ovulation from her right before she went into shed, because now she has gone back to her usual sleek self.
Still hoping for babies:D
