View Full Version : Got tagged again
I got tagged again last Tuesday, but it's not bad at all. I had the mice and rats thawing in my snake room and when I reached in the cage to get my baby pastel ball python he was already in feeding mode and tagged my finger. There's just a little blood, but I went ahead and took a pic.

I just got tagged during feeding yesterday. It was Greg My boa though
I've only ever been tagged once in twelve years and that's having handled thousands of ball pythons tens of thousands of times.
Is getting tagged now a rite of passage of sorts; something to be proud of, or is the opposite true?
Just checking.

I plan on avoiding the tag. No need to be in the bite club for me ;)

I've been tagged lots of times by wild snakes...usually in the process of rescueing them from my cats, but never by a tame one. Sheer good graces that the ones I have been bit by were not deadly.

It is on another forum I'm on.
I have been tagged 4 time by my snakes. One was my 200 gram female (Adrian), my 200 gram male pastel(Leonardo) and 2 times from my little 2-3 month old corn(he's so small it didn't leave a mark. I have also been tagged by a young buttermilk racer.

My baby jungle/coastal carpet python has bitten me lots of times. Less so, now that's she's getting older...and lordy i hope she stops eventually because that is going to HURT when she's big (she used to not be able to break the skin...now she surely does *lol*) Got bit by my rescued corn snake on the first day, but hey, that was understandable. She's not tried since then, and I like to think she's quite happy now. She's little too.
We got two balls from the pound a couple weeks ago, and one managed to tag me with a fang on one finger while it was striking at a rat...but it was an accident, and the poor thing couldn't see well since it was having a bad shed. The other one that DIDn't bite, actually chased my hubby across the kitchen when he got near it after it had already "killed" it's rat...so we call that one bitey *lol* he actually charged my foot today when i was walking by...little brat! I actually think it's pretty weird to have a bitey ball python. The only other time there was a bite was when my hubby was a little drunk and tried to feed our baby girl ball with his fingers *rolls eyes* she was pretty small at the time so didn't hardly break the skin. *lol*
I used to wear gloves when i handled my carpet python. She started biting again just when i figured i didn't need gloves anymore *lol*

bahahahahaha good one
I got tagged again about a hour ago, but this time it was from my male bloodred corn. He only weighs around a 100-150 grams so it didn't do hardly any damage. He got me cause he had already gotten the scent of the mouse and when I picked him up out of his critter keeper(he had mites so he is in quarantine), he turned around and tagged me. I didn't get any pics cause I didn't think it would show up.

Its been awhile since I've been tagged good. I don't count hatchlings because they have a tendency to just bite to do it. Its been about 3 years since my last good adult bite(it was an adult IJ). You learn how to read your snakes and know if they aren't happy or not...And don't poke around in there cage on feeding day with rats in the room. I had a close call with my face a few weeks back. Just being careless of course.
Yea, I was being careless with the corn snake. Just so you know, I don't get tagged regularly. I'm normally allot more careful.

In 7 years I have only been bitten by my corn snake 3 times, and not once in the last 3 years. . In 6 years my ball python has never bitten me. I had a wild caught regular corn hatchling that I found on my back porch that bit constantly. It would literally latch on to my fingers and gnaw. I finally let it go.

Also, when I feed, I thaw the mice and put them in a separate container, then I wash my hands really well before I get the snakes out and put them in the feeding containers. I am a nurse so I am a handwashing freak. I wash my hands before and after handling my snakes.

its ALWAYS good to wash your hands before and after you handle your snakes regardless of if you're a handwashing freak. you can get nasty things from touching dirty reptiles. not to mention if you smell like rats or something else a snake might be tempted to want to snack on you're setting yourself up for more bites. i've been bitten twice in my life, once by my own snakes. both were my fault and were dumb.

Hey Mike just wondering in the 12 years what was the mistake that caused you to get tagged? :S

I've only been bitten twice by Kaybe.
First time: I had just gotten him and I was too excited to wait a week to let him settle in and decided I just wanted to take him out for a little bit. He was clearly stressed and not ready for handling and he gave me a little "nip". I put him back, I learned my lesson.
Second time: I usually feed Kaybe in a container that has a trap door for the rodents to go through. One day I decided to be "smart" and not use the lid of the container, but instead used my fingers to hold the mouse by it's tail so that Kaybe would snatch it from my hands. Bad idea. He went for my hand instead, and coiled around my arm, chewing on me a little bit. I went to my computer to do work until he decided to let go. Then I put him back in the container and feed him the right way.
So both times it was clearly my fault. Kaybe has never hissed or striked or anything like that otherwise. I trust the 3yr olds I babysit to hold him (supervised, of course). He is a wonderball ;)

Why do we need stories about everyone getting bit?
Seems rather foolish. Our goal should not to be bitten and not to "brag" about it.

My goal was never to get bit. But I was new to snakes and I made some mistakes, and that's how I got bit. I would definitely never brag about it. I'm actually kind of embarrassed! :o But it's something to learn from

If you own a snake it is going to happen at some point, no matter how hard you try not to get bit it happens. I was out at a herp farm today and got tagged by a rosey red ratsnake as I was putting her back in her box.

Aaron I see the stories as a learning experience to all so that others don't make the same mistake :)

Yes I agree also. Getting bitten isn't really something to brag about, but it might help someone else learn.
By no means do I try to get bit, I was just having a bad week. I got the corn snake bite cause I was feeding him in his critter keeper by hand (he had mites and I didn't want to contaminate my tongs or a feeding container) and he flew out of his cage, so I grabbed him with my other hand to put him back in his cage and he whipped around and tagged my finger. I got the ball python bite cause I was thawing the rodents in the snake room and was 2 days late feeding, so he was extra hungry and when I reached in his tub to put him in his feeding box he tagged me. I was tagged another time a couple months ago by a different ball python cause I got my hand too close to her after she finished constricting her rat and she tagged me cause she was in feeding mode. I have been tagged I don't know how many times by one of my baby corn snakes, but you can hardly consider those bites as they don't even brake the skin. Then of course I have been tagged by a buttermilk racer out in the yard and a ribbon snake.

was handling baby retics today, Travis Kubes (the breeder) and I both got bit numerous times. Seems to be unavoidable with the little ones.
edit: here's the only visible bite mark

I was expecting more of a bite, but apparently baby retics are smaller than I thought.

I once was tagged a few years back by a 2200g+ pastel female in feed mode when opening up her tub to present her with a f/t rat on tongs. She realized that it wasnt food in her mouth almost immediately and let go but my hand was bleeding like crazy and swelled up almost golf ball size in the area that was struck. I then started opening up all of my very aggressive adult feeder's bins with a snake hook...
That same girl the year before struck my girlfriend's hand when we were checking for eggs. She struck up out of her hide and curved down just to tag the hand about to reach in. It was pretty funny, especially because it was just a little love nip, but i knew right away that the eggs were on the ground!
Anyway just thought I would share those fun little tag stories!

yeah, you might be surprised, I'm pretty sure this is the one that bit me.

I've got pretty big hands (I can palm a basketball) and it barely got me.
That looks to be a pretty good size baby, it should have left little bit more of a bite than it did.
And the second rule of bite club is ?
