Is that really a spec .. man was I off on that one lol then nice caimen crocodilus. Ill blame it on the pic lighting lol!

Rachel - word of advise - the smaller the caimen is the better the chances of having better husbandry for a long time .. yacares and spec get to a hefty size althoguh I personally love yacares.. I have only worked with one littl juvi and he is FULL of personality - I love the little guy!

Is that a joke Rachel?????

How can u care for a 6 foot crocodilian???? Realisticly????

Sorry but this really agravates me .. there is no way! Unless u own your own place or house. Only then can u properly house a 4 or even 6 foot caimen and ensure him proper husbandry his whole life.

Also .. Have u ever jumped on a 6 foot caimen .. All I can say is 4 feet is pretty much the max I would do on my own ..

Don't take this as a personal attack ( I know we have had this discussion b4 me and you) but I seriously doubt you could care for a 6 foot caimen .. I know I couldn't properly... Space wise I mean ..

If anyone wishes, lets have a construtive debate on this subject .. I have lts to say about this..

Take care

I am personally one of those ppl who believe that owning any crocodilian is a bad thing unless used in educational shows or any really good reason. An enclosure for a crocodilian about 6 feet long is going to be huge even though some ppl might think otherwise. The fact is that they are not meant to be in captivity. I work with a small Paleosuchus palpebrosus and when he was about half a foot long he bit some1 and nearly broke his thumb so they are a force to be reckoned with. All i can really say is if u have the facilities to keep it go ahead but they are not easy animals to keep! And just a quik question, why would u want a hybrid crocodilian?

Umm, I'll be using it for education too...that's what I was planning to do in the first place. Plus, females don't get 6 feet and I have much help around here with it. I'm not going to argue about this.

...Though female Specs only get 4 maybe 5' and the males about 6' or so, but you also got to look at the other species that is in the bloodline. Yacares get to be a good 8 feet or so. Now you gotta think which traits this particular caiman is going to be dominate. Also, why get a hybrid? Its just screwing with purebreds and I'm sure the main reason for it is because they are a loop hole to ship cross state lines with out permits. -not counting the intergrades...
Plus if you get one make sure youre ready to spend most of your life it.

Yes, i thought about that a lot. These things can't get 4 - 6' even as adults... that's just crazy talk, really. I think 8' is the full for this hybrid. And plus I never really liked "mutts" in the first place... the add just kind-of caught my attention, and I thought "wow, a caimen that doesn't bite, that sounds interesting." But there is no caimen that isn't nippy as a baby. They aren't the perfect "pet"... I think these are just money-makers. I'm sticking to the p. palpebrosus.

Rachel - don' t look at this ans a rgument but simply a discusion .. thats how we alll beneit and thats where we trully learn something..

I did not think Yacares got that big .. wow defetly not a good caimen to care for..

Xain .. i'd hate to admit it but u make very good points .. especially about the hybrids iimportation.

I'm gonna have to agree with Xain I hate hybrids, its just stupid to make something that wasn't meant to be. Thats the cases with many snakes too, so many are inbred and what not. Thats why some times I prefer to have wild caught animals because I know exactly where they came from and that no one has messed with their genes.

okay lets not get in to the whole wild caught discussion. Lets just say that i will never get
a wild caught if I can help it. Wild caught geez!!

....I don't totally hate hybrids, because some intergrade naturally. (Most caimans can and some do.) It's just when they are bred to do the whole loop hole bit. We all know rhombifer and porosus do not even see each other in the wild, but they are still bred. I wonder why.. Hmmm. (USDI permits are one of few needed to ship and sell Cuban crocs.) As I've said the caimans being hybridized don't bother me too much and besides, I recently got suckered into getting a Yacare X Spec. I know, I know but they are just so darn cute. heh.
I 've also noticed Mitch saying that these particular animals grow to be adults at 4'-6' but he also states that this is the 2nd time it's been done and I remember not to long ago him offering them as the First ones to have been hatched. Now, I don't see what he bases his size opinions on being that they haven't even been around long enough to reach adulthood...
Also, Jermey, I prefer WC on some species more than CB for the same reasons. Seems everyone wants the newest/expensive freak out there. I guess I'm old school.
