OK so I was at my dad's and he told me that someone he knows is getting rid of a 50 gal aquarium and my dad picked it up for free.. how awesome is that?
aside from fish (which i despise) what can we get to live in there? Snake or lizards are both options my only requirements are the following:
it has to live in there its whole life
relatively tolerant to handling (not for me, my husband is very grabby)
fairly affordable
no frogs
no turtles
(for those of you who are thinking "hey now you can have your garters" I have a tank set aside for that already)

Oooo what kind of garters are you getting? I want garters for my next snake(s) ans then I'm done. (I hope :P) But to answer your question a corn or ball would be happy in a 50g. Beardies are good aswell, (Though they like bigger). I'm having a brain fart and I can't think of any others. Get a cool one though!

A corn snake is very cozy in those...
Milk snakes!! (they don't like handling much)

I have my beardie in a 55 but its an exoterra so more horizontal space and less depth...
and as for the garters... I have no idea... I will have to ask the garter experts when its time lol

A ball python or a corn snake or a california king snake are all good options for that tank, and all are very husband-friendly ;)

FINALLY
I decided what was going to live in my new free tank! I am going to get a Uromastyx hubby wanted one after we got our bearded dragon and they have some pretty awesome colour morphs once I decide which sub species to get I can determine how many (if I can safely house more than one in a 50gal)
I am excited.

All the king snakes I've met have been puppy dogs

In my experience kings are one of the snakes that will be calm in your hands, then suddenly latch onto your finger...

There was a blue uromastyx for sale on CL here the other day. Very cool looking animal; they just look so...archaic.

Exactly what I was going to say :) Also, I find that California King Snakes are the "nicest"

Yeah kings are friendly. What made you think otherwise? They just... sometimes eat each other. Also you can house more than one Uro together. Actually I'm pretty sure you can co-habitat species.

I had a trio of uros for a while, babysat them for about 4 months, never saw them fighting for space, but we had a large platform they could all sun themselves on.

Personal experience made me think otherwise lol but to be fair it was a baby.
There's also video on youtube where a little kid is handling an adult king and it suddenly latches onto the kids face, no strike mode no nothing. Priceless video but that's a matter of opinion.

Skyyame would love to see that video :p Find it if you can?
Baby kings (like any other baby snake species) can be nippy- but with proper handling they calm down really nicely. I've held plenty of baby kings and always loved how calm they were :)

It's not so much the fact that they're nippy it's how they'll bite without warning. For instance, I adore carpets, they're my favorite, but they're notoriously nippy when they're young. However they get into their defensive posture and you know when you might get bit.
It's the snakes that will be calm in your hands, and just latch onto you without warning that make me uncomfortable. Certain snakes will do it. I've seen kings do it, and I've heard that anacondas are notorious for it. I'll try to find the video lol check back in a few hours. No promises http://www.lilwaynehq.com/forums/images/smilies/grad.gif

All baby snakes are nippy for the most part... its why they live... str8 out of the egg they need to defend themselves. With regards to striking without warning, perhaps but they don't strike for no reason, there is always a trigger. Try and figure out what it is.

Still, trigger or no trigger, king snakes are less likely to give warning that they may bite than the snakes I prefer and own.

I have a uro in a 55. They are the best lizards IMO. As far as keeping multiple together, it varies with individuals. Some do great in groups and others will be territorial. Just don't put two males together of course. What kind are you thinking of getting?

I had an albino cal king way back and that thing was the devil. I couldn't do anything without it biting me. Just a grumpy snake from the time I got it to the time I sold it. Great feeder though:yes:

I'm hoping to pick up either Mali (U.maliensis) or Ornates (U.ornata) but I am also interested in the Moroccan species (U.nigriventris)

Those are all great ones. I think it would be a lot easier to find a captive bred ornate out of those choices. Wild caught uros can be a nightmare to work with. Keep us posted with what you decide. I don't see many uros on here.

yea I would only go with captive bred my collection is getting to the point that bringing an animal in with parasites can really do some damage, I'm in the process of finding a reputable Canadian Breeder the type I will get depends on what is available and of course the quality of stock I'll wait as long as I have to to get a good quality animal

I went to go pick up my free tank and it turns out it wasn't a 50gal like I thought... its actually a large 4'x18"x2' which is much larger than I was expecting and since I just brought home baby Hydra and she's in a smallish tote I decided to put my Uros on hold and move my Lacertas into the big tank making them a huge playground (I may have the opportunity to pick up another female)
so when I move my pair into the big tank the bullsnake can go in my 50gal since my RTB is still too small to feel secure in the 50 gal (shes a June hatch and is maybe 2-2.5ft long) and is still able to zoom around her 20gal without issue

Whew! I feel much better about Gabby now. I have heard people tell me that he should be 3-4 feet by now and was worried I was doing something wrong. I got him in late May at only a month old or less. He is about the same size maybe slightly bigger.
