So I looks like all 4snakes will need done. (My wife will kill me.) She was so against the atb. Now what about my birds, dog, ferret, and bearded dragon? Will they all need done?
Do a search for Nix on this site, you'll find hundreds of threads.

To my understanding, the mites that use snakes as a host will can only thrive on snakes. They won't go to any other animal. Correct if I'm wrong, but thats what I've always thought.

Provent-A-Mite works like a charm. However, if you cannot wait, cost is an issue OR you have sort of shipping restriction and need a fix for this now:
How to NIX (Snake Mite Treatment) Part 1 - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oqziwNaosQM)
The guy gets on my nerves, but he pretty much details 100% down the line how to Nix your animals and enclosures. It does work using his technique.
Follow these steps, you do not have to use a pesticide sprayer, I use spray bottles, but this method works.

So its day three of the of the War of the Mites. I have never fresh killed or live rodents to my snakes and all four have them!!! so I think this jurassi-mite ( the only mite treatment sold around here) is garbage. I bought it cause my is an expert on mite removal ( thanks Google! ) and many other things( again gotta love Google) . So as soon as the stores open I am going.g for nix. How fast will this work? How many here have used it? I tried to watch that YouTube video but he was kinda stupid. After 3 minutes I figured I might just Drink the mixture and put myself outs my misery. I am afraid to hurt my snakes ( obviously) especially my little one. How important is the ratio? If I mix it a little less. Nix and a little more wate is it a waste of time?

Before you kill yourself, try this; I use RID brand, home lice control spray. It is the same mixture of ingredients as Provent-a-mite and works the same. You can buy it in the pharmacy section of most department stores, like Walmart. I have used it for over 5 years now with no problems, as Provent-a-mite is not allowed to be sold in NY.

You do not have to mix anything, it comes in a spray can. Clean your enclosure and add fresh substrate. Remove the water and the snake. Spray the substrate untill damp. Let it air dry. Put wate3r and snake back into enclosure and for the next 30 days you are good to go. If you change the substrate you have to retreat the enclosure again. After I do this I have never had to retreat the enclosure , becaus eit has always worked for me. Within the 30 day period the mites in the enclosure and on the snake are gone, never to return.

Agreed, also spray any new substrate you get lightly with this stuff.

This Canadian friend would love to help, but I have never had mites *knock on wood*
However, as to your question about how all of them got them so fast, I have heard somewhere that mites can travel 6'/hr. So if one in your house has it, they could easily infest the rest.
I aslo heard but do not know personally, that the mites that infest snakes do infest reptiles in general, so you may want to look in on your beardie (the pro's here will correct me if I'm wrong on any of this)

Snake mites are specific to snakes. A snake mite needs to have pressure on it's back to feed, that is why they are found around the eye and labia scales as well as the cloaca. The mite must be under the scale to feed. A snake mite also does not breed on the snake, it breeds in the enclosure. This is why it is so important to get the enclosure treated.

Provent-A-Mite does not kill mite eggs.
Nix does.
Are there any other unanswered questions you have?

Provent-a-mite must kill the eggs, because it works every time without fail and has for the past 10 years. This is from experience, of many keepers of large collections.

you are correct in saying provent a mite does NOT kill mite eggs
it kills the mites as they hatch from the egg

The theory with provent a mite is that it stays active in the viv for a long enough period that it not only kills the live mites but lasts longer than the eggs take to hatch so that any hatchling mites are immediately exposed to it and killed before THEY can lay eggs.
KORBIN5895

Great info but any idea why on of my snakes still has mites 5 days latter?
SSSSnakes
11-03-11, 11:49 AM
If it kills the eggs or kills the babies as they come out of the eggs, it still takes care of the eggs and rids every thing of mites. I think the only point to make here is that it works very well. Other methods may work to. Use what works for you.

provent a mite remains active for 30 days
the life cycle of mites is way less than that as you said mate
i like the fact you do NOT have to use repeat treatments as you do with other mite killing products
cheers shaun
If it works, that's cool, the only issue I have with PAM is that it makes your eyes water and forces you to leave the room due to the toxic vapours. Doesn't sound to safe for my reptiles if you ask me.
Use what works for you though....
SSSSnakes

I spray Provent-a-mite right in my snake room and it never effected me or my snakes. Although I have a ventilated snake room with a ventilation fan running. I guess if you have your snake room set up properly, you will not have these problems.

its designed for reptiles
it does say to keep your reptiles out the room for 2 hours after the treatment and to keep the windows open,to allow the fumes to disapate
i personally don't like the treatments you apply directly onto the snake or the use of olive oil like some folk suggest
as you said mate,do what works for you.as long as the snakes ok and the mites are dead

i have never used nix treatment, but from what i hear the treatment sometimes has to be repeated
the beauty of provent a mite is that it remains active for 30 days.which is longer than the complete life cycle of mites
you may have to repeat the treatment mate
but don't quote me on that,i'm sure someone who uses nix treatment will tell us the what the problem is

SnakeBytes TV - Episode #146 of SnakeBytes.TV - "My snake is down with the sickness" (http://snakebytes.tv/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=238&Itemid=14)
This is how the guys on SB use their PAM.
If you're only using the treatment IN the animals enclosure, you might as well not even bother. Mites rae quick little buggers and will likely have colonies set up OUTSIDE your animals enclosures and your treatment is not affecting them at all, allowing them to live, breed and survive.
Also, if you are only treating PART of your collection, don't bother, they are EVERYWHERE. in the enclosure, on the walls, on the floor, behind the bins, on the ceiling, EVERYWHERE!!!
TREAT EVERYTHING.

millertime89
11-05-11, 03:45 PM
the carpet and the walls around the enclosure.
what kind of hides and decorations do you have? if they're wood, just throw them away, if they're plastic, run them through the dishwasher.
KORBIN5895
11-05-11, 04:03 PM
I have nothing in the quarantine tanks. All decorations have been soaked in bleach , completely submerged, for 2 days
You're clearly missing something if they're not gone; walls, celing, in enclsoure, outside the enclosure, behind, under and in everything in that room. Lights, racks, carpet, floors, EVERYTHING.
If you treated everything, you wouldn't still have mites.
SSSSnakes
11-06-11, 12:48 PM
If you used the Provent-a-mite you only need to treat the enclosure of the snakes. Since it last for 30 days, any mites entering the enclosure would die and the mites outside the enclosures will starve to death without a host to feed on. As the eggs hatch the baby mites will die before they can lay any eggs. No need to treat anything except the substrate. Spray all your snake enclosure and the mite problem is gone, no matter where the mites may be hiding.
