A guy on another forum I'm on rescued a few snakes a couple of months ago. From what the guy said, the previous owner had them in dirty habitats and they looked underfed. He couldn't keep them all so I offered to give the 2 dumerils a home. I didn't know anything about dumerils so I researched them before I even offered to take them and had their homes ready for them when they got here. I didn't expect them to be quite this size but no biggie.
Right now one is a bit pissy and the other is a little calmer. I imagine after getting settled in one new place and then a long ride here being jostled in a cramped box only to be given a new home has stressed them out. Once they get settled in I'll post pics. I've never seen dumerils in person, only pics and I must say the pics I've seen doesn't do them justice! They're absolutely beautiful!
They bring my snake count to 7 now. And my feed bill probably just doubled lol. Time to start ordering in bulk or start breeding some rats!

Congrats! Dumeril are such sweet looking snakes. Pictures never seem to show they true color. Once they settle in i would still leave them alone until they eat for you. If they are under weight getting them to eat should be the first priority. We can wait on pictures. I would give them about 3 to 4 days to settle in then try feeding. If they don't eat wait about a week and try again. You don't want to try to much as it can be stressful for them.
Keep us posted on how they are doing.

They seem to be settling in quite nicely. Not so much movement in their homes anymore. I'm not going to feed until next feeding day. I'd rather have them on the same schedule as mine plus it will give them time to settle in. They don't appear to be underweight, but then I don't know how a well fed one of their size should appear. They have a really nice muscle tone to them with no excess skin that I can tell. Nice strong feeling when they moved through my hands.
I have a couple of pics the guy sent me of them. These were taken a couple of weeks ago. Let see if I can get this to work since it's his pb acct.

Very nice! Dumeril's are awesome! Can you see why we chose this to be our anchor species? You will have fun with them. They ARE very sweet and VERY easy to work with. :)

So far they seem to be settling in quite well and appear to be very docile albeit skittish at first. Since I had to take them out I decided to give them a good once over. At first both were a bit flighty but using a firm but gentle touch, allowing them to move through my hands, they settled down in no time. Only took about 10 minutes or so :D I slowly checked them over as best I could.
The darker to the two is also a little longer... closer to 5' She's also the most curious. lol I checked her gums (don't won't to open their mouths yet, especially since I'm not really a pro and don't want to stress them out any since they're settling well). They were nice and pretty. Didn't hear any popping or wheezing. No sign of drainage or mucus, etc. She has a firm grip so she's not weak. No scale rot, no sores or anything. Her belly is a little pink where the smaller one is like an off white. Is this normal or something I should watch or be concerned about? It starts about 1/4 way down and goes almost to the very tip of her tail.
The smaller one (only by about 2-3 inches in length) is a little lighter in color, probably do to more blushing. She's much more laid back. Her belly is off white (no pink like the other). No scale rot, sores or burns. Her gums look good. No popping or wheezing. No sign of drainage or mucus. She has a firm grip too. However I've noticed she doesn't stick her tongue out all the way. Only a little past the forks or around half way. I have yet to see it fully extended. Should I be concerned?
Was going to take them to the vet next week but got informed today that my job is changing and I'm really not quite sure how that's going to effect my income so I'm going to hold off until I find out more definite info. My daughter works at the zoo and is going to see if Doc (the zoo vet) will take a quick look at them if need be. That will be next week and no guarantees. Although I have hopes he may since he's helped me with some baby sparrows mommy left for dead (there was a third but it was dead).
Any info/suggestions an experienced dumeril keeper can give me is appreciated :D
Congrats! Beautiful Dums! It took me about 6 weeks to get both of my boys eating, but now they regularly accept their meals, except one will not eat while in shed. One prefers to feed in his enclosure and the other will eat either in a feeding tub or in his cage. Yours don't look underweight and from your in depth health assessment it sounds like they're both in pretty good shape. One of mine has a very speckled belly and the other completely white, the later's will turn pinkish prior to the opaque phase of his shed cycle. I'd recommend keeping an eye on that one, but hopefully it's just a sign of an eminent shed. As well, one of mine also does not fully extend his tongue, but is healthy and normal in all other aspects.

I agree. Both of these dums look great. You will get variation on color between individuals so I wouldnt worry about that either. Some of the younger ones have more peach and blushing while one is completely grey. Our big girl is black on grey. You will find they have a great temperment and are very hardy, very easy to take care of and make great pets. Once again cangratulations and may they be just as fun for you as mine have been for me. :)

So far it has been. They've allowed us to handle them. At first they're a little movey but settle down very quickly like a couple of minutes. The smaller one is real clingy. Not in a bad way but like she actually likes to be held and she does NOT like being put up. lol
